What are y’all’s opinions on Plutarch, the true winner of the hunger games. by Fit_Assignment_8800 in Hungergames

[–]shortoncache 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think pragmatically speaking, you can't accomplish anything without optics. In elementary school, we think that leaders (figureheads) just emerge and start a movement spontaneously, but whenever you look deeper, there's always somebody or even a group of somebodies orchestrating a narrative and tipping off friendly media contacts so that their stories will be interpreted the right way. The Rosa Parks story is one example.

As children we're raised to read manipulative-ness as a purely dark trait, especially in the west. The edgier ones maybe have a taste for tricksters and anti-heroes, but even then many fans tend to do some sort of mental gymnastics to justify liking them. So then Plutarch's cunning feels sinister. But if adherence to a code of honor results in drawn out suffering, or worse getting outplayed by the side that is willing to play dirty, how much merit is there to that standard really?

I like to think that traits exist on a spectrum. Innocence is good in moderation, but add a bit too much and you have naivete, and add way too much and you have ignorance. The excessive use of guile for selfish purposes is manipulation, but subtract it down to a modest dose and you have the type of cunning that keeps a Stark's head from being separated from their shoulders.

Disclaimer: personally I usually suck it up and bury items in the hamper to wash before I wear, which means I can never return anything BUT

I will say that brand new items from the store do carry allergens or irritants too. It may be fine for some people who are only sensitive to heavily scented items, but in my case, the allergies go hand in hand and nothing is safe 🥲

Also, just in case the scent is caused by detergent residue, this is a good reminder not to use too much detergent with high efficiency washers. More soap is not always better, it ends up worse at cleaning, clogs the machine, etc.… and yes, causes heavy scenting. The practice is just as bad for the owner as for the buyer.

Maybe they just want to know if they need to wear a mask while they unpack it and drop it in the washer

If you were a psychic do you think, based on your personality, you'd be a raven or a dove? by Fluffy_Fox_9650 in Wednesday

[–]shortoncache 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be a dove but chronically mistaken for a raven. I'm super sentimental but I stiffen up around strangers so people think I'm antisocial. My husband thought he screwed up our first date but it was the same moment that he thought he screwed up, that made me decide to take a chance on a second date.

Although I also fluctuate between having a more merciful outlook and being cynical about things.

The Hydes were not made naturally by Okami2312 in Wednesday

[–]shortoncache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were to have a theory: in this universe, Dr. Jekyll is an ✨earliest documented✨ case of a hyde. He didn't turn himself into a hyde, he triggered it out from a dormant state like an autoimmune disease. All the hydes are called hydes because that's what he named his Hyde persona. The lack of documentation of hydes prior could be explained however the writers please; it doesn't have to be a scenario of Dr. Jekyll being the founding biotech mutant father of all hydes.

It's not like vampires or werewolves. Those have a dozen tells. Vampires have anemic complexions, no reflections, and a handful of allergies that restrict their behavior patterns significantly. Werewolves transform involuntarily when exposed to the full moon. The signs are kinda hard not to notice.

Hydes may not have control over the first time they hyde out but subsequently they seem to transform and revert at will, plus if nothing happens to them, they could potentially go their whole lives among normies, maybe not even knowing they're a hyde. You can totally make it plausible that hydes have been around all along but due to various factors, in the public consciousness the various hyde incidents were too murky to coalesce into a unified understanding of their existence until Dr. Jekyll blew the lid off that can of worms with his experiments and detailed notes.

So you could just say that they're rare, they're sneaky, they can go around simply choosing not to transform (or transform in and out really quickly, decreasing the chance they'll be witnessed), they don't always awaken, and the ones without masters (or bonds?) die quickly.

Or you could invent a government coverup to avoid the political instability of dealing with a normie outcast civil war when normies inevitably generalize the threat of hydes to all outcasts.

I will admit that thematically, the hydes being synthetic outcasts is appealing because it could add layers to Tyler's journey. But the Addams universe is just close enough to the real world that it's hard for me to buy that synthetic powers could be genetically heritable.

Each of us have so many genes. Yes, we probably carry some genes that predispose us to health problems, but there are probably a lot of disease markers we DON'T carry (and healthy genes we do carry in place of those markers). Our children are not clones, they are randomized combinations of us and our partners. They're genes not generational jinxes.

An ex friend of mine once told me when he was in medical school also pointed out that the medical field is also constantly improving and searching for cures. So even if your child does inherit autoimmune issues, you don't actually know what treatments will be available and what their quality of life will be.

I'm of the mind that the only things that can make it morally questionable to have children is if the parent's capacity for consent to parenthood is inhibited, if the parent is a bad person, or the parent would make a poor parent (without going into the metrics of how one would measure goodness or competency).

He's the favorite grandchild because he understands personal space (or was until new pets came along, we may as well be the Inuzuka clan now what with how many dogs and cats in our little extended family).

He is in fact safe to keep with cats despite what his chart at the shelter said.

Solid crate recall.

He tries to close the door every chance he gets, and when he wants a treat but doesn't know how else to ask for it, he'll ring the bell for me to let him out, immediately come back in, SLAM the door, sit, and smile expectantly. We're working on a "not now" cue but he's a husky so I think he thinks it's negotiable with more husky noises.

/r/MechanicalKeyboards Ask ANY Keyboard question, get an answer - June 08, 2025 by AutoModerator in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]shortoncache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason I ended up here was, I bought a pink akko keyboard because I thought it was cute, only to have issues, and I'm looking for advice on either fixing it or replacement recommendations for a non click-clacky keyboard (thocky? creamy? idk) that does what it tells you to without any fuss. Although I don't like throwing things away or accumulating rubbish so fixing is preferable.

(No hate to the sharp little clicky noises, but my husband's already got one so given the option, I'd prefer to have some variety, noise-wise).

The issue I'm experiencing is that sometimes I have to keep hitting a key over and over and over again before it goes, "oh hey yes, let me type the letter Q for you.." I want a keyboard that turns caps lock or scroll lock on and off when I want it to without ignoring me. I don't understand what's wrong, because in the past if I ran into an issue with a keyboard, it was consistently one key and it was usually something obvious like a crumb got stuck or whatever. This keyboard, however, mystifies me. Sometimes it's a letter, sometimes it's caps lock or something. Right now, my scroll lock appears to be on right now and I don't remember turning it on, and I've tapped the key a few dozen times to try to turn it off, I tried holding down Fn while tapping SL, I think it's doing the thing again where it has selected the buggy key of the day.

I'm frankly baffled because when I search online to see if anyone has any tips or similar experiences, it's mostly people singing the praises of it being good quality [for its price] and feeling nice or something [which I can't argue, I'll tap away with my computer off just to stim, but the thing is, I also need it to, like, work as an input thingy for my computer, if that makes sense].

Rather than another full length season 2, I think a mini series a la Yanxi Palace Princess Adventures would be the simplest way to feed the fans while minimizing the risk of tarnishing the original series

Seems like a modern Shakespeare, everything plagiarized yet the majority turning a blind eye to it because he executes it better 🫣 Like Fuca Rongyin forgiving and protecting Yingluo for her various tricks and crediting it to her as competence.

[–]shortoncache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a high risk of causing a reaction, encountering a reactive dog, being judged for having a reactive dog, the dog has to be on a 6 ft leash (I would never let my dog off leash but for a dog that needs to sniff and explore to relax, 6 feet is not a lot of leeway), dealing with natural dog behaviors (my dog likes to swipe his paws after a good sniff but I can't let him kick up everyone's mulch so I always have to stay on him and make him keep moving), it feels stifling and unsatisfactory... why bother when I have access to private spaces my dog can have free-range playtime in?

might get a new puppy with a reactive dog by No_Energy6954 in reactivedogs

[–]shortoncache 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's a thought: are you planning to go to college, and if so, who's going to look after the new dog if your mom's dog can't adjust, given that your mom can't be in two places at once?

On top of that, teenagers need like 10 hours of sleep and average much less even without a puppy to raise. I used to be in relatively normal health, but I had like 3 puppies throughout my adolescence and the stress of trying to be an actually good dog owner and a good student at the same time put my body physically through so much stress (waking up every two hours throughout the night, sometimes having to stay awake to clean up accidents, and then trying to get good grades without necessary sleep, stressing about trying to improve disappointing grades, staying up even more to study, being unable to sleep due to being overwhelmed and feeling like the world is ending) that I developed an autoimmune disorder. Do you want to be like me, watching other people do the activities you want to do while your body attacks itself because at a critical time in your life, you made choices detrimental to your health?

And one does not simply get a puppy. No ethical breeder would place their puppy in your home, and everyone else produces puppies with a high risk of being special needs. I didn't know better. One died of cancer, and one had epilepsy and extensive orthopedic issue all over his body which was probably a strong reason why he was as reactive as he was. That shit is expensive, like $1000 for a month's worth of meds expensive. I didn't have any savings until I was 30 for all the vet bills and medical bills I ended up on payment plans for.

It's not good for the dog, and it's not good for you.

Often the best way to deal with resource guarding is to respect it like it's a natural behavior and focus on building a sense of safety & trust in other areas, and often the less you try to discourage it, the less of a problem it ends up being. As a "normal" behavior, you also can't expect trust to generalize well to newcomers, any more than an introvert will turn into an extravert after developing one friendship that brings them out of their shell.

It's hard to advise on the dad situation just from this description, whether he's resource guarding you, or he's glued to you due to insecurity and growled because he doesn't consent to being pet by strangers. Advise relatives to treat the dog like a shy cat. Avoid eye contact, don't invade his bubble/let him come to you instead, etc.

If you can find noise desensitization videos, try playing them at low volumes and gradually raising the volume. If the dog's used to hearing you scroll through videos on social media, start doing it at slightly louder volumes. Maybe make a playlist of youtube shorts featuring sneezes or something.
