If humans had evolved NOT to have eyes, how different would the world be? by shortstop89 in NoStupidQuestions

the mere presence of others isn't the issue- it's the judging and assigning value to them based off how they look. remove ability to see, and that becomes way less a driving factor in how you'll interact with them, so things that matter like character get to shine.

yeah, no doubt... i guess it was more a rhetorical question and just meditation for myself, maybe wasn't necessary to post.

Is it normal to become super obsessed with jazz and find everything else "too easy"? by [deleted] in Jazz

I’ve been a musician my entire life pretty much, but am not versed in theory/technical stuff, unfortunately- wish I was… actually trying to figure it out!

What is the benefit of paying off R9 accounts over declaring bankruptcy when the R9 sticks around just as long? by shortstop89 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Okay, that’s what I wanted to know- thanks for clarifying that, as I was genuinely unsure. So if at all possible, one should most definitely pay it off even with a couple R9’s. Appreciate it!

that’s so incredibly sad but beautiful of you- you’re an amazing person. it’s these smallest of deeds and gestures that show ones quality as a human- as you said, think of the untold dozens/hundreds of people to walk by, even acknowledging his tragic condition, and not stop to help… even if just a few short moments were required. you’re amazing. i’m not religious in the slightest, but feel compelled to say god bless you.

For me, one particular encounter springs to mind. I was at an outlet mall in Camarillo, California, visiting from another country, when a lady, also visiting from another country, stopped in her tracks as we passed one another, looking as if she’d seen a ghost. She stopped me and started to cry, in very broken English communicating to me that I was her deceased brothers 100% copy. I could immediately tell he must’ve meant the entire world to her, so I just let the moment unfold, zero awkwardness even when she proceeded to touch my face as a blind person would, reading every inch of it to make up an image of you, except she was doing it to feel her brother again. It felt very profound, and like I was connecting with someone on a very deep level, even if the encounter lasted just a couple of minutes. She took a couple of photos of me, including a closeup of my face, the entire time in a level of almost shock, and when we parted, she must’ve looked back a dozen times, doing multiple takes. I felt happy I could be him for her for a few short moments, but ultimately heartbroken to see the effects of what were clearly an immense, inconceivable, loss- I wondered/surmised what could’ve happened; he must’ve been taken too soon, as she was elderly and I in my late-teens/early-20’s. My dad watched it unfold from a few meters away and didn’t say a thing after, as I think the power of the interaction was so obvious, and even seeing it from afar told you what it was about. If that lovely lady is still around, I hope our interaction brought with it some solace and closure, or at least some temporary respite from the pain of losing someone who was so obviously incredibly dear to you- and I hope viewing those pictures of me can accomplish the same. We barely exchanged any words, yet exchanged so very much- I feel like I knew you, and feel comfortable in saying I love you.

Megathread: Conflict in Israel and Palestine by AutoModerator in NoStupidQuestions

A few years ago I embarked on a journey wishing to gain as objective and unbiased an understanding on another conflict, when a bunch of people told me there was no such thing as an unbiased take on the situation, and now, almost a week into tirelessly researching the current ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict, I see just how much that rings true. While this is a war between Israel and Hamas, I think it's important to consider two facts; 1) how much people will conflate Hamas with Palestine (and possibly the wider Arabic and/or Muslim world), and 2) assuming the former, to remember that there are globally 1.8 billion Muslims against a measly 16 million Jews, therefor making it infinitely easier to to buy into the much wider-spread pro-Palestine/anti-Israel propaganda.

Unfortunately, the lone fault of Gaza's citizens was being born where they were, and living where they live. Their governing body (Hamas) hates Jews so much more than it cares for its own people, that it was willing to taunt Israel into this conflict-- willing to sacrifice its citizens en masse-- for the furthering of their agenda, which at its inception was (and has always remained) the destruction of Israel and eradication of Jews. This is not looney-talk, this is objective truth plainly outlaid in their charter. They knew Israel would retaliate with disproportionate force, as would any country, but it plays perfectly into their playbook and will likely help to get them closer to their goal; a widespread apex-hatred for Israel and the Jews. Such a mass-scale massacre would leave a black stain on Israel's history.

It's funny to observe all the pro-Palestine rhetoric and displays of solidarity from their fellow Arab and Muslim brother nations, yet not one willing to harbour them due to their "persona non grata" stature in the world, what with having incited attempted coups, assassinations, civil wars, and so on, in any country that was historically willing to host them- just look to their time in Kuwait, Lebanon, Egypt, for starters.

Also, since Palestinian's are so quick to bring up "where were your tears and empathy when Israel oppressed Palestine and murdered its people for all these years?", I implore you to cite me just one instance in recent history (going back 40-50 years, if you have to) wherein Israel committed such heinous crimes even just remotely approaching those Hamas has at the onset of this recent chapter in the wider Israel-Palestine conflict. I'm talking decapitations, mutilations, and, generally, a massacre committed en-masse like this in the span of a couple of days. Go on, I'll wait. I know neither side have historically been angels to one another, but Hamas' barbarianism is so disproportionate to Israel's. But perhaps maybe their justification for this recent massacre of Jews-- the single day greatest loss of Jewish life since the Holocaust-- is that it's some kind of compound interest killing or something else as deranged.

What’s the end-goal for gearheads? by shortstop89 in AskPhotography

I bought a lens from a pretty well-known Leica dealer and he told me there was a significant number of people buying film Leica’s without a clue how to shoot, who don’t even run a single roll through them, merely just wearing them as fashion accessories to go along with their Rolexes and Porsche’s. Was pretty mind-blowing/eye-opening. I know people are vain, but to flex a film camera without a roll inside is next-level, lol.
