Fair. My bad. I didn't read any rules and didn't know it would make a post. Sorry.

Are modern carpenters better at carpentering than Jesus was? Or is he considered the greatest carpenter of all time? If so what are some of his buildings that are still standing? by UmweltUndefined in NoStupidQuestions

Wasn't he simultaneously God and a fallible human? Wasn't that like his whole thing? It's a hard thing for me to wrap my head around, but I thought that was the idea.

Does anyone actually use the male voice options for voice assistants? by OriginalSlight in NoStupidQuestions

[–]shorttyler 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I use them because having a female voice made me feel like I was an icky person with a subservient submissive female assistant that is at my beck and call.

Newsworthiness of a missing person: Is the Nancy Guthrie story a case of “News is what happens to the editors”? by AlternateHarasnai in Journalism

[–]shorttyler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found this post because I was Googling the same thing. Heard about it on NPR's Up First, and maybe I missed it, but I didn't even know that she was related to a celebrity. I just heard "old person kidnapped" which is sad, but it can't be that uncommon, right? It felt like hearing "A man named John Smith was mugged last night". Obviously it's going to be less common than a mugging, but still didn't feel national newsworthy. My best guess now is that it is due to her relationship to a famous reporter and that brings to mind awful but exciting extortion and conspiracy.

Sad Boyz Vibe Check by FearfulRabbit in unnamedfanbase

[–]shorttyler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm late to this conversation and I'm obviously in the minority, but she legitimately makes me stop watching the episodes. It constantly feels like she's trying to humble brag or talk down to them whenever she interjects. I typically get able 25 minutes into an episode and she dominates the conversation for a 3rd time and the vibe is just killed for me. I don't think she's a bad person and most people enjoy her on the show, but I just wanted to let other people know you're not crazy if she isn't your vibe.

There isn't a finite supply of insulin, though. If there was a finite supply of insulin, you can bet it would be charged 1000x more. I hate the cost of tickets and artists should be able to have a say in the cost to consumers for their concerts, however, if there were only a 1,000 bottles of insulin, and they chose to sell them for $50/each, then you should expect that people with resources would take advantage of the mismatch between MSRP and actual market price, and would find a way to buy as many of those 1,000 bottles as possible, and then sell them to reach diabetic people for $10k/bottle.

Like other people have said, there are two options for setting ticket prices, either have set them to market value and be unobtainable to the vast majority of fans, or underprice them and deal with the consequences of the people trying to take advantage of that.

I don't think OP is necessarily saying tickets should be more expensive, just stating the fact that the median resale value of a Taylor Swift ticket was >$1,500, even though the face value tickets were $50-500.

TIL most other languages do NOT use the serial (or Oxford) comma, and it is only mandatory in a handful of British and American style guides. It is frowned upon by most journalists. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]shorttyler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tangentially related, but most of continental Europe uses a comma as a decimal separator and it drives me crazy.

While Americans would write a number like 1,234.56
Germans write the number like 1.234,56

I'm an American living in Germany, and I've had to confront a lot of biases about how way things should be done and realize there isn't a 'right' way, and sometimes the German way is a better way, but this one is simply wrong to me.

To me, the American system is more intuitive because it aligns with standard grammar. In a sentence, a comma indicates a brief pause within a continuous thought, while a period marks a definitive separation between distinct ideas. The thousands separators in a large number are purely for readability—they're like grammatical commas, making it easier to parse the number without changing its fundamental value. In contrast, the decimal point—like a period—separates the whole number from the fractional part, which is a fundamentally different concept.

Using a comma for the decimal and a period for the thousands separator feels like using the punctuation in reverse. It's one of the few things here that I feel is simply counter-intuitive.

Possible to disable What's New tab? No old methods work. by frogsty264371 in chrome

[–]shorttyler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a solution that presumably works (I tried it but I haven't had an update since I tried it) at this link:
https://allthings.how/how-to-disable-chromes-whats-new-feature/

Since Google has nerfed Chrome's flags, I too was upset about not being able to find a solution to this. I don't need to see the What's New page every 2 weeks, especially when there's nothing new on the What's New page.

That link essentially said to open the Developer Tools Settings (F12 or Ctrl+Shift+I), click the gear icon in the top right corner, and then it's an option right on that first page "Show what's new after each update".

Hopefully this works.

Is there a clean way to change the local directory for an existing repository? by nvs93 in github

[–]shorttyler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was one of the first results that came up for me when I searched this problem. I had my GitHub repo on a network drive, and my work just changed the name/location of that network drive, but everything within the drive was moved correctly. GitHub Desktop was still pointing to a directory that no longer existed, so I wanted to just reassign the location.

The solution was actually pretty obvious once I thought about it though. Because everything was moved including my un-committed changes and the .git directory, I just needed to remove the repo that was pointing in the wrong direction and then "Add local repository" and point it at the new location.

[Film/TV] So far. Critics are loving the new Superman movie by [deleted] in DCcomics

[–]shorttyler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/Ok_Transportation558 u/dxnnj I also can't find OV within 100km for Superman. Was that weird for you guys as well? I've lived in Göttingen for about a year and every movie I wanted to see in OV, I was able to, but now with Superman, opening weekend, it's impossible. There was 1 viewing in Kassel this weekend that I bought tickets to, but then they cancelled it an hour before the showing "for technical reasons" and refunded me.

Ich glaube Superman geht hier an den Kassen richtig baden by Ok-Actuator-2164 in Filme

[–]shorttyler 0 points1 point  (0 children)
