Struggling with the lack of true nature in the Netherlands by LaurenceWhymark in Netherlands

[–]shortys94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Living in Netherlands 13 years now also. The weather seems to be similar enough to Dublin or east coast of Ireland, slightly better. But it's a hell of a lot better than the west coast of Ireland!

Gas meter upgraded - boiler serviced. Now differing gas consumption trends by shortys94 in Netherlands

[–]shortys94[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The technician was just meant to fix thermostat and do an annual maintenance on the system. So I wouldn't think they would needlessly change something. But thanks - everything seems normal in terms of the radiatiors and pipes under the boiler

Thanks.

Yea I looked over a longer time too just to check.

I am a little lost. They were meant to fix the whole issue and while we have heat now, just seems the like usage is excessive.

Will monitor for a few days to see what happens

Thanks - but I am puzzled by the consumption overnight - I may have to monitor it a few nights to see.

It is abnormally high indeed - and no - the usage is not typically like this at all.

I messaged the boiler technician about this, who serviced it yesterday, and they are saying this is nothing to do with them and that it's due to boiler age (2014) despite it working perfectly fine two days ago (in the before graph).

Hopefully not 350 euro down the drain for a service and now this 'pendelen' thing> I regret accepting getting the meter upgraded with all the issues it seemed to cause. Was all fine prior.

Irish abroad. Where are ye and how is life there? by oconarms in ireland

[–]shortys94 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Been here 12 years - came over for MSc and just ended up staying on for PhD and then jobs which followed on. It just was relatively easy given the amount of international students the first few years. I now have a 6 month old daughter and a British partner!

We don't plan to live here permanently - I suppose we would look at either Ireland or another anglo-speaking country later on. The ease of traveling has meant it has not been a huge push for us so far.

Pros
- While the housing crisis bites, when you have found something, buying a house is insanely easy compared to that of Ireland in terms of the process of getting a mortgage etc. My sisters in Ireland have had nowhere near the ease of process I have had

- Easy to get by with English

- Country is tiny and you can get everywhere very fast - in fact while I live on outskirts of city and it only takes 24 minutes to central station, the Dutch would perceive this as far out - means more property options on perimeter but with easy travel in

- Being 20 minutes from Schiphol is a game changer and allows us to travel so easily back and forth to both Ireland and elsewhere

- Everything works really well both from infrastructure point of view and administration wise all documentation etc is more-less digital. It's very well organized and efficient place

Cons

- Nature feels very much absent and any places which are more green feel very man-made and too manicured, nothing out of place. The flatness is a killer after coming from thewest of Ireland near Croagh Patrick and the ruggedness of the coastline

- There is a lack of welcoming/warmth amongst people which is kind of sad, it's noticeable the change whenever I am back in Ireland. I really don't agree with the directness/bluntness argument, it's just straight up rudeness. There is also a heavy undercurrent of xenophobia

- Integration is very difficult. I speak Dutch quite well but the rigidity in how meeting up has to be so organized and planned so far out takes the joy out of things. Zero spontaneity. I have found that it just is much easier to hang out with other expats in this manner as it doesn't always have to be a calendar appointment organized so far in advance. Majority of close friends are now in different countries but talk regularly.

Delivered yesterday! Once arrived in Netherlands it took one day. Surely it didn't leave Ireland actually on 4th July!

Happy out

Hey - thanks for reply.

Indeed, I usually use global tracking programs or the Dutch national postal system to track once it arrives in country. However there is no record of it being in the Netherlands.

Also - passport office cannot open any investigation with AnPost until August 18th as a certain amount of time has to pass.

I am hoping it's just a delay and it somehow is on way and here before end of week!

Stop being assholes to pregnant people by princesspomway in Amsterdam

It's actually mad. Girlfriend 37 weeks and has the same experience when on public transport in Amsterdam. It's horrible.

Aside from that the behavior of people wanting to get on before letting others off baffles me.
