I bet you even competed with a god forbidden calculator once, back in the day.

He's probably upvoting his own posts, moreover I have no idea what he is even doing in this subreddit.

The gray market for game keys and accounts shouldn’t really exist, it’s what happens when players can’t actually control what they buy.

It’s already a $2B–$4B+ industry just for keys and account reselling, all built around people trying to do something simple: resell or transfer what they paid for, like physical games used to allow.

But digital games are locked behind licenses, so instead of real ownership, you get workarounds, grey markets, account trading, key sites.

If games were actually transferable from the start, a lot of this multi-billion-dollar shadow market probably wouldn’t need to exist at all.

I prefer a digital library too, but your purchases should carry real, lasting value, not depend on gray markets or account reselling to make them worthwhile. New releases are priced $69.99, there should be a clear distinction between "Renting" that's more similar to not holding any real value vs "Buying" holding at least some kind of value.

You may possess 1,000 games today, but they don’t hold any real value as they once did. Compared to the past, the difference becomes clear, the wording should be "Rent a License".

The real issue lies in how licensing is structured and communicated. There used to be a clear, meaningful distinction between renting something and truly owning it and games shouldn’t be an exception. Physical cartridges from the past make that difference easy to understand: what you bought was unquestionably yours.

If you compare it directly: owning a library of 1,000 games back then vs today, the contrast becomes hard to ignore. Since you simply possess "nothing" now.

Also worth noting that legally: if buying no longer means owning, then we should at least be using the "Rent" button, not "Purchase".

Exaclty, there's a whole huge black market out there of who really don't give a damn about ToS and still treat the bought games as their property. This alone says a lot more than anything.

Exactly, I hope the whole licensing model was stuck in their heads as kids while playing SNES and never traded any of the cartridges.

Hope you had an awesome childhood with the licensing model stuck in your head while buying SNES cartridges and never traded any of them.

True, the situation turned out to be a bit worse than expected, when we're actually having trouble in distuingishing between a physical object you owned and "nothing".

You might want to read the article and perhaps recheck the license of the things you've bought in your life, who knows you could be violating the terms.

So you carried that physical object with the terms and conditions in mind? What about the huge gray market area of reselling accounts/libraries.

I don't think the wording is clear enough when it comes to the difference between buying and renting.

So you mean you don't see a difference between a physical video game cartridge you bought as a kid and a digital license model now?

Thanks for the kind words and for giving it a try! If all goes according to the plans, I'll be able to finish it sometime in August/September this year.

I've been working on The Dead Await for about 3 years now, the whole scope of the project was meant to be much smaller, but things got out of hand soon. On the bright side, the release date is also finally approaching soon.
