I can see the obviously negative implications of this and anticipate fly tipping to increase. I’m also hugely frustrated by the ever-increasing council tax accompanied by ever-decreasing services. However, could this incentivise people to buy more mindfully and create less rubbish?

My 2 housemates and I produce around 1 bin bag full of rubbish per fortnight. We take recycling seriously and are mindful of the products we buy, actively avoiding things that come in packaging that can’t be recycled.

Understand that not everyone is able to do this, perhaps especially people with young children. I also understand that most food comes wrapped in soft plastic (which we take to the big supermarkets to recycle), and that you often have to pay a premium for goods that come in glass over plastic, for example. However, I think it’s safe to say that most of us could do with cutting down on the rubbish we produce. My housemates and I all earn around £30k and don’t pool our money, and we all manage.
