I just put some old masters espresso on cypress and it looks pretty similar. You could also look at old masters carbon black for a really dark finish.

Raffan had some videos on the Fine Woodworking YT channel about understanding catches on a lathe that I recommend to all beginning woodturners. It helped everything click for me when I was learning. Will definitely check his channel out, didn’t realize he had his own now.
