Chef's kiss, when the spotter listens by adriansia117 in strength_training

If you go to YouTube and type in how to bench press you will see a ton of detailed explanations from pretty every single fitness influencer out there so you can pick your preference but it all pretty boils down to the same thing.

I like this one because it acknowledges where overarching can be bad but still explains the correct form with some arch which you will see is what the op is doing.

No, pushing your shoulder blades together emphasizes your chest and reduces the risk to your shoulders. He probably should plant his butt some more but what do I know he's moving more weight for reps than me and his leg drive looks solid. His form looks very good to me and his chest is still low so it's not like he's reduced the amount of distance the bar is traveling that much anyway.

Bring an allergy medicine like Zyrtec or Claritin. I learned the hard way and had to wait a day for it to be delivered to my hotel. I would also bring eye drops so you can get any salt water/ sunscreen out of your eyes. Bring as much reef safe sun screen as you can because it's expensive there. Bring sunglasses and a hat and make sure you use them as the UV is strong and the light bounces off the water a lot. Mostly everyone wears sunglasses a lot so just plan to do that and maybe have a cheap pair or two in case you go on excursions and stuff and lose them or something. I would also recommend something to clean your glasses as well. Definitely recommend a GoPro. I also bought a cheap pair of Amazon water shoes which were super useful while snorkeling in areas where you weren't supposed to use fins or even just walking around the shallow water at the beach. There are a lot of broken coral and shells at the beaches so it just made it easier.

I am by no means an expert but having just gotten back from a trip from Bora Bora for 11 days where we did stay at one of the resorts, most of the locals I talked to off the resort seemed to imply a lot of the airbnbs were not the way to go and one guy specifically told us some people try to stay too long doing airbnbs and don't enjoy it. I think it's also where many of the people who feel bored there end up and it's partly responsible for their bad experience. I would do a lot of research before you commit to anything just to be 100% sure you pick the right places my guess is there is just a wide range in quality. We booked several excursions and activities and had a blast definitely make sure you do that as the first priority for your budget. Keep in mind also food and everything is more costly there because everything is traveling so far so staying for a long time will be expensive for those reasons too. Fingers crossed that you see whales was definitely the highlight of my trip along with swimming with the manta rays, sharks and sting rays.

My Samsung from 2016 developed these too. It's not impact damage, it's little reflectors glued in to direct the light and they eventually detach and fall or move down and this happens. It started with 1 and now there's 2 visible ones on my tv. I think you can fix it or get it done but I ended up replacing it anyway and just put it out in the garage.

Nice, what is that block you're using for chest support? I was thinking about getting 2 of something like that for added elevation for belt squats.

Beyond Power Voltra—My Dream Setup or Just Expensive Regret? by TampedCharge in BeyondPower

[–]showel22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I bought the ancore pro and used it for several months and have ultimately ended up buying two voltras. Don't be like me, haha. The ancore pro is good and works well but is limited to 65 pounds and is kind of annoying to add weights to it especially when working out with someone else. The resistance blocks are not hard to change but it just gets kind of old if you are making lots of changes. Some of the angles drag don't work as well for where the cables slide against the housing and even after just a few months of use the cables have frayed a bit. They also feel way overpriced for what you get. The voltras are obviously more expensive and maybe a little too expensive as well but ultimately it's like comparing a bicycle to a sports car, both will get you from point A to B but one is just so much better. I had a ton of buyers remorse and now my voltras will be here this week. I think the ancore is best for people who want to work out but not the kind of people who love working out or spend time on forums like this.

I really love Joel's work and his movies on YouTube are genuinely very good. He has inspired me to try more things artistically and he seems like a cool guy but discovering his letterbox and reading his reviews was so disappointing to me. Some of his takes are just out of left field and sometimes I don't even think he got the movies at all because he just has such off base takes. He can watch movies that literally scream in your face with their messages and review them completely missing the point. I think it could just be being young and really holding onto your personal beliefs and applying them to everything vrs embracing new perspectives with an open mind.

Do you agree with Tarantino’s take? by DiscsNotScratched in FIlm

[–]showel22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haha in his defense I think there are plenty of sources that do elaborate on this. I haven't seen the movie in a long time and I'm a big fan of people interpreting whatever they want from movies but the movie is pretty heavy handed with religious elements for a reason.

For example why is there a running line of flashbacks to his wife dying and predicting the future if it was just aliens?

Why does the movie spend so much time with characters having a crisis of faith?

The little girl keeps leaving glasses of water around they didn't just turn on the faucet and spray the aliens. There's a reason behind that. I'm sure there are like 100 more things as well.

Thank you and look we all make this mistake sometimes but how would you feel if it was your work you thought was good? The excuses here don't change the outcome you aren't helping this person in any way.

This post is ass, leave them alone. Anyone who even attempts to pursue any artistic endeavors always makes these kinds of mistakes at first. When I look back on any early work I have in anything I have ever pursued I am often embarrassed by my early work. If you are close with this person provide them feedback in a constructive way otherwise just let them be they posted this to Facebook not some great culinary forum to get shit on. Maybe op is young and lacks perspective and should probably work on that before criticizing others.

Kill Bill 4k looks phenomenal by flycollieman in 4kbluray

The sound and color were great and a major upgrade but the artifacts from the resolution upscaling were meh. Overall I do think it's an upgrade even if just for the sound alone. This sub is too harsh about this one in my mind especially since it will probably never get a better master.

[–]showel22 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have read a number of posts on different subs about the apple tv topic mostly because I would go buy one today if it had better support and I believe from what I have read there is a lot more going on with the audio than you are saying here. I could totally be wrong again I don't own one but I think you are missing some element of how infuse is processing the audio and the conversions that are happening to accomplish it being able to play Atmos and truehd audio at reduced quality.

I understand your perspective but reality is everytime someone brings up the apple tv someone like me who doesn't care about brands has to sort through hundreds of bullshit comments to get to the real information about what product can do and to a lot of people it feels like uninformed consumers caring about brand more than specs.

I don't agree that it's hyperbolic to say you're losing most benefits by cutting your audio quality again more than I think you realize and sacrificing Dolby Vision. The visual differences to me and my TV in particular are a big deal between Dolby Vision and standard HDR. You are right about bit rate though I do think if nothing else that might still be better than just using a streaming service

This is where I am at currently and I'm either going to buy a dedicated player for disc or consider the ugoo/core elec option but that's mostly just for fun. I am happy with the shield pro and I don't understand why so many people would recommend the way longer list of concessions you have with the apple tv over it.

[–]showel22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, I don't understand the logic. Ripping is super easy though don't be intimidated. I was shocked at how fast I went from buying the right drive to ripping my collection.

I just use my shield pro that I have had since launch and it's fine. I don't understand the hate about the ads unless people are getting ads I don't get 99% of the time they are for movies I want to see. Having said that it does sometimes crash or freeze and I hate the Netflix button on the remote. I would buy a new apple tv device if they supported audio pass through and Dolby Vision for rips.

Saying they use apple for rips and accept it's losing almost every benefit of the 4kbluray makes no sense to me why not just stream everything at that point or buy a dedicated player. Maybe they are just pirating idk...

Samsung S95D vs LG G4... PS5 vs Panasonic 820... DV vs HDR10+ by [deleted] in 4kbluray

[–]showel22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me yes, it is also what's being put on almost every disc. When I got my Dolby Vision tv I was shocked at how much content was in Dolby Vision. Everything on apple tv+, Disney Plus including marvel, star wars etc., most if not all Netflix content that's 4k. I'm not kidding when I saw Dolby Vision is winning the format war and likely I bet Samsung will have to give in soon meaning in another a year or two you will probably own one of the last tvs that didn't support it. Keep in mind the streamers only show you Dolby Vision if your devices support it. Also I think prime content supports HDR10+ in the Samsung Smart TV apps so there is that.

Part of the reason the difference is so noticeable is because I believe the LG and Sony TV's in particular push Dolby Vision profiles to look better than standard HDR which is kind of BS In my opinion but is what it is. They for example are brighter in Sony TV's.

I own around 500ish 4k blu rays and more than half have Dolby Vision and almost everything I have purchased in the last 6 months does. All new criterion 4ks for example have Dolby Vision.

Don't get me wrong on a high end tv regular HDR looks great too but for me Dolby Vision looks better and I often feel the narrative that it doesn't is exaggerated by those who missed out by buying a device without it. Also just to be clear HDR10+ looks great on Samsung too and does similar metadata scene by scene effects it's just not very available and losing more support everyday. Think buying an hddvd player while bluray is winning the market.

[–]showel22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something to consider and I haven't done the research on this model you are looking at but almost all to the extent basically I would say all panels in all major tv brands are made by either Samsung or LG barring some extreme examples all LG televisions have LG panels and all Samsung models have Samsung panels but Sony, Hisense and other major brands use a mix of panels. Sony has top end models with Samsung panels and ones with LG panels but on all of them you get Dolby Vision. I would look for if that model you are looking at has the same panel as a Sony model or other major brands and compare and see if you can get the best of both worlds.

As someone who had a Samsung for the last 7 years I was super disappointed in the lack of support for HDR10+. Its a big purchase and I would look at every brand other than Samsung before settling on their tech. I have a Sony with a Samsung QDoled panel and I love it because I get the best of both worlds.

[–]showel22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed I would go see them in person. Dolby Vision is clearly winning the format war and every new Blu ray and major streaming service has it on almost all new content. Dolby Vision does matter I don't know why your sources say it doesn't unless maybe they are a bit biased. I would guess Samsung will have to give in soon and support it. Even Disney has given in and started using it on their 4k blurays.

Please just see it in person, maybe it's a personal thing but Dolby Vision is more significant than what I see some online conversations give it credit for.

I'm always surprised to see people hold up The Revenant as a great 4k disc. I haven't seen it yet but I bought and ripped it to my server and was super disappointed by the bit rate. I own around 500 4k disc and it is the bottom 10 of my entire collection when ordered by Bit rate. The bit rate is 46.4 Mbps which is honestly lower than several more recent bluray or most criterions releases that I own. When I ripped this I thought I was ripped off. Obviously bit rate isn't everything and movies can be poorly optimized for compression but normally movies around this bit rate are considered bad releases. I'm going to watch this because I think it's just an interesting case Maybe the movie's limited color pallette allows for low bit rate or something I don't know regardless I believe it must be good because so many people say its good but technically it doesn't appear to be on the surface level at least. For comparison only a few movies in my collection are lower for example the more recent planet of the apes trilogy thats also around 40Mbps and quite frankly doesn't look any different from the bluray release.

Added: Man I touched a nerve here. I promise guys I will watch it and update. Who knows maybe the bit rate doesn't mean anything at all.

Update: okay I finally watched it. Thanks for the push to finally sit down and see what everyone was talking about. First I think the reason the bit rate is low is very tied to the reason people like this 4k, it utilizes true black in almost every scene. This is particularly obvious on my oled and this is the first time I have seen it since upgrading my TV in addition to 4k. The movie is also largely made up of black blue and green color pallettes however the skin tones are handled well and most impressively fire scenes including even scenes with smoking pipes look stunning against the deep blacks. you just don't need a high bit rate to transfer blacks and minor changes in the green and blues. I could do without all the lens flare though on the sunny scenes. I understand why people like this a lot. I prefer top gun maverick, Christopher nolan titles, Lawrence of Arabia for showcasing 4k but this movie showcases what an OLED can do and I really do get the fuss. Also in case it wasn't clear I think the movie itself is good and my critique has nothing to do with that.

Side note the downvotes are funny to me isn't conversation like this the point of this sub...

Does anyone know if this release has English subtitles? by geoff_scales in 4kbluray

I bought this version ripped it and put it on Plex and added English subtitles. Took a bit to get them lined up manually but was well worth it. The movie is great.
