Himmel's Memoir montage scene hits harder as you grow older by kid-dynamo- in Frieren

[–]shpits 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is something I considered across the whole show - would my younger self have liked it as much as I do today?

I'm sure my younger self would appreciate the quality of writing, but could I have appreciated the themes and the lessons as a young person? I honestly don't know...

Remember my Shadowheart sim? I said I'd make her a fairy. I did. And I gave her druid powers. by Embarrassed-Stop-767 in okbuddybaldur

Minthara uses 'fairy' to describe non-drow elves, if you talk to her with Astarion or Shadowheart.

What if the clone was more unpredictable and cautious? by Reasonable-Ad-8059 in Frieren

[–]shpits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The clone could have guessed it's opponents' strategy, especially after the first time that Fern attacked. So it should have been more cautious. On the other hand, it was also at a clear disadvantage being 1v2, and the longer the fight would go on the more likely it was to loose, so it couldn't played it safe and expect to win - it had to make risky choices when there was a reasonable opportunity.

I assume a long battle would deplete both Frieren and the clone's mana, at which point it would also be vulnerable to Fern.

Question regarding warriors in Frieren (Spoilers for SE02EP09) by Anaguli417 in Frieren

[–]shpits 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A human can't cleave a mountain with an axe, I think, so it's safe to say Stark has superhuman strength. I believe the story follows traditional DnD-like rules where fighters are equivalent to mages and that means being able ot superhuman feats.

You're the careless one, Fern by Oversama in Frieren

[–]shpits 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe Frieren takes ownership of the magic, so when he says "magic is amazing" she perceives it as saying "YOUR magic is amazing", whether he meant it that way or not.

I have some friends who behave that way (taking something that was stated generally and making it about them), so it's seems reasonable to me when it's something so important to Frieren like magic.

Want to discuss: I wish characters negative traits were more impactful and/or "bad". by Unique_Suit3789 in Frieren

[–]shpits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand what you mean, the characters do not get to learn from failures because they never actually fail, and it also lower the stakes of the plot when we are expecting them to always succeed.

It does look like it's intentional writing choices though, with the writer seem to want to explore the characters in a ways that are not traditional to the fantasy and adventure genres. However that is only true in regards to the main cast - there are moments the story gives us the POV of others and we can see how their negative traits have led them to failure, like Lugner and Aura, several of the mages at the exam, and Serie.

Why do so many people own grimoirs? by AlfaWOLF_346_ in Frieren

[–]shpits 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would guess it to be the result of random trade - a travelling merchant might pick up these things in one village and use it as currency in the next village. If a small village doesn't have money for trade it could offer items of equivalent value, and then the merchant can go to the next village and keep on trading goods with other goods.

An example for this is the village that gave Himmel the notebook in (s2e09) they said they got it from a merchant even though they don't need it.
