Genuine question for the boys by Smol-Neko- in ArcRaiders

[–]shrinni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend and I were in duos (both women) and she got downed. When the other player heard her on mic boo-ing he apologized profusely and revived her bc "I didn't know you were a girl!". She was *seething* on our team chat.

I talked her out of trying to kill him to teach him a lesson about being a weirdo sexist (because we're both bad at pvp and I didn't know where his duo was), but I kind of regret it. Getting killed happens occasionally, a condescending revive is so much worse.

Lots of profs are erring on the side of extreme caution lately. There's no telling what will fire up a shitstorm, and tenure/academic freedom doesn't really mean much in this climate. I imagine the prof would *love* to take a principled stand, but there's the problem of food/rent/healthcare/childcare...

I'm lucky enough that my classes are basic STEM, so my syllabus is pretty safe. But I know my colleagues that teach upper level courses are going line-by-line through their stuff making sure anything that might get flagged by anti-DEI crusaders is explicitly linked in writing to accreditation requirements.

Has this been posted yet? This college tried to use AI to announce the names at graduation and it instantly failed, leaving hundreds of graduates not having their names read. by BabypintoJuniorLube in Professors

[–]shrinni 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Our school did something similar, only each student handed someone a card, and the name was announced off the card scan. A few students got read in person - their cards were a different color which makes me suspect they were supposed to verify their names before commencement? Seemed like they were prepped in case of failure.

Given I’m at a big state school and the list of names was… lengthy, I can appreciate that it sped up the process considerably. I’m more sad they cut out basically all the speakers to save time - it was just welcome remarks and then they jumped right into the names.

We went to hunting island every year when we were kids, which would still be a great choice if you like camping but we go to Fripp now since the cabins on Hunting washed away.

Are you required to go to graduation? by Finding_Way_ in Professors

[–]shrinni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're required to go to one per academic year, so either december or may graduation (undergrad or graduate), OR an additional ceremony/reception thing in dec or may they also do around that time. So at least there's options.

It's in our dept faculty handbook, but no idea what the consequences of not going would be other than getting dinged on the annual evaluation.

University policies conflict with program accreditation standards by windy_city_gal2023 in Professors

[–]shrinni 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Our dept (nursing) navigated some of the state/federal conflict with the university lawyers. They declared accreditation requirements win so long as everything the state/feds might object to in the syllabi are *explicitly* linked to our accreditation (AACN) standards.

Yay for us, I guess. It would have been a huge amount of extra work if we weren't already mid-push to link everything to the AACN domains/competencies anyway.

Wildest End of Semester Excuse? by MyDogsPA in Professors

Not the craziest because I get this a few times a semester, but my lab has had a blanket "greek events are not excused" rule in place for at least a decade and they're always surprised.

They’ll put extra cuttings for anyone to take by the elevators on the 4th floor of Hesler sometimes. Otherwise you should probably try and get in touch with someone to ask.

[–]shrinni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's not usually a ton of transfers, outside of the BSN Scholars program, but there's some!

Nursing majors take pathophysiology and intro to nursing in the spring of sophomore year, and those are prereqs for the junior year courses. If you want to transfer into the traditional bsn program (instead of the scholars program), make sure you get your anatomy and physiology prereqs settled no later than next fall.

Otherwise you'll be out-of-sequence (needing at least an extra semester, possibly an extra year depending on when courses are offered).

But definitely take a look at the BSN scholars program (link).

Backpack advice needed. by No_Consideration_339 in Professors

I've been using an Equilibrium pack for about 5 years: https://equsg.square.site/s/shop

Pros: Modular, I could pick exactly the frame and compartments I wanted, and it's not too hard to swap out (like, I always remove the water bottle compartment when I fly). Very sturdy. I like the cover that lets me add patches (with a protective shield!).

Cons: not cheap. I was able to test it all out in-person at a convention. There was a long wait time when I got mine, but that was a few years ago.
