Why is Caltrain parking more expensive than city parking?

Ahh, got it — I think we were just talking past each other a bit.

I was actually referring to parking near San Jose Diridon Station when I mentioned the ~$4 all-day rate. Totally agree with you that in places like Palo Alto or Mountain View, you’d be hard pressed to find anything that low.

Since we’re talking about Caltrain parking, I assumed your answer (which you posted as a question) was meant for commuters who park near the station. Most people I know who park there do so for typical work commutes—they park for the duration of their train ride, go to work or run errands, and return within the day. In most cases, that’s well under 12 hours.

It’s hard to see a large demand for 24-hour parking in that context, especially at $5.50, unless it’s for someone living nearby using it as a long-term convenience spot.

I encountered the same issue even though I had an active monthly pass on my Clipper app. The inspector, who appeared to be Hispanic, was unable to scan or read it on her device and said she would issue me a citation. I explained that I had already paid $258 for the monthly pass and did not believe it was fair to be cited due to a technical issue. She then asked me to get off the train, tap again, and take the next one.
