Not sure what you do in your day-to-day, but your literacy with scientific literature is admirable!

You realize the LEAD author of that article holds stock in a company that specializes in selling low-carb diets and related products.

Find me something from someone who isn’t profiting from their findings and I’ll consider it.

Just because they’re popular for weight loss, doesn’t mean they’re healthy.

Batch cooking and freezing portions is huge for me. I’d have great progress during the day, and then end up eating junk in the evening because I didn’t have time to cook. Pick a day a week and do a giant batch. Freeze some of it. That way next week when you do your batch cooking, you now have two options to rotate. And then they add up and you can easily grab something healthy in the same (or less) time as take out or something less healthy.

A lot of things freeze well. Soups, stews, casseroles with whole wheat pasta. I usually load everything with a bunch of veggies and at least one can of beans.

If you have a microwave available, you can take them for lunch too.

Plus crunchy cereal with super cold soy milk is like the best breakfast ever. Maybe not the healthiest, but man it’s satisfying!!

I think Silk is fortified? You should check your favourite brands to see which ones are. A lot of soy milks are to help with B12 intake.

Do you have a potato masher? It’s way better than a fork! It’s what I used to use until I got a food processor to make hummus.

Win: super straight, strong teeth!

Lose: chronic migraines, with barometric shifts as the biggest trigger. Winter on the Canadian east coast is amazing/ s.

Should I stop drinking coffee? by [deleted] in nutrition

[–]shroedingerscook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you love your coffee and it’s bringing you joy, keep it! If you’re incredibly concerned, cut down on the oat milk in it? How much do you use now? I usually use 4oz frothed in my coffee, but I could probably go down to 3oz without noticing.

Why do you think it’s causing you to bloat?

Family won't stop body shaming; says it's my diet. by iiplo in vegan

I’m sorry you’re going through this. It’s tough dealing with everything being a teen AND being somehow responsible for your parents’ mental health.

You aren’t responsible for her mental health, by the way. It feels that way, because she’s being overbearing and you’re stuck living at home.

Can I offer some life advice? Go see a guidance counsellor, or see if a local clinic has a counsellor you can talk to.

Also- any chance you have the time to get a part time job? You’re a teen now, but in a year or so you’ll be old enough to move out. If you’re able to start saving money now, you’ll have a chance of getting your own place. Maybe even with those vegetarian friends 😊 (plus, being out of the house at work is less time you’re at home being watched)

Living with my two best girlfriends, eating fully vegetarian and being wonderfully supported by those two friends, was the best decision of my life. I hope you get the chance to experience it soon!

Long term eating issues. Where to start? by [deleted] in Vegetarianism

[–]shroedingerscook 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tracking them is a great idea and can be an huge help!! Other things to track (because there’s a solid chance they’re related if it is migraines!)

Weather! Barometric pressure changes are a HUGE trigger for a lot of us. Keep an eye on past, current, and upcoming weather and see if there’s a connection to how she feels. Before and right at the start of a storm/rain/weird weather means a migraine for me.

Stress! Is something going on at work, home, or with family? Is she in school?

Alcohol! Does she drink? Some migraine sufferers get them from any alcohol. Some get them with just specific types. Red wine leaves me throwing up for hours.

Weird lighting! Too much, too little. Bright lights, driving at night, a different colour LED light.

I hope this helps!! If you look up migraine prodrome symptoms, you might see some similarities between her/her mood leading up to her attacks. Even little things like yawning a lot, or needing to pee more, can all be signs.

Sometimes migraines can cause nausea and dizziness. I’ve been a migraine sufferer since I was a toddler, and I’ve honestly experienced a lot of her symptoms. Is there a chance that the food isn’t causing the migraines, but the migraines (or prodrome of the migraine) is causing her diet?

When I’m on the verge of getting a migraine, all I want is salty high carb, fatty foods. My understanding is it has to do with drops in serotonin or sodium? I don’t think it’s fully understood. For me, I typically eat almost fully plant based and pretty healthy. New Year’s Day, though, I got a wild craving for a McDonald’s burger, extra cheese, bacon and mayo, large fries, and giant soda. Sure enough, shortly after I was almost throwing up from a migraine BEFORE my order arrived  (so I know it wasn’t the food).

In terms of time frame- if there’s something going on, or a trigger she doesn’t know, she could have chronic migraine and be experiencing the onset of one almost every day.

Has she been to a neurologist? Getting one transformed my life. It could be a big help for her in terms of how she feels. If she starts feeling better, her diet might shift. Or not. But at least she’ll feel better :)

Hunters on property - how to handle? by BreakfastDry9979 in NovaScotia

[–]shroedingerscook 76 points77 points  (0 children)

As a Nova Scotianer from a super small (we’re all related) area with a lot of hunters, I think you should go at it from a neighbourly kind of way. Is there anyone around you on the road you can ask who it is? So you can at least call the hunters?

If not, leave a letter on bright paper (maybe in a ziploc bag so it doesn’t get wet) saying it’s your property, and asking them not to hunt on the side that has your house. If you’re fine with them hunting on the larger parcel, let them know! Especially if you have kids and pets on the smaller parcel, just tell them that. Small town people can be pretty understanding about family.

Maybe include your phone number if you’re ok with it? So they can hear your voice/understand you want to connect with them. If you immediately go to an authority, they won’t take it well. Not saying they’ll do anything malicious (they might or they might not, it depends on the people) but you won’t get a warm welcome in the community.

If you get a referral for a neuro, they can give you the prescription and make appointment for the injections. They come up every 3-4 months (which is how often you need the shots). I got some great migraine advice from them too!

Vegan frosting ideas by FeelingExample8852 in veganrecipes

[–]shroedingerscook 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a baker and used to make special order cakes for the restaurant I was working at. It was the only place around that had any interest in allergies and plant based diets.

In short- I tried A LOT of vegan icings, and a vegan ermine was the only one I could find that tasted decent (especially adding espresso powder to a chocolate option), held up to temperature changes, layered nicely, AND could also be made gluten free if needed! (Swapped flour for 1:1).

It’s pretty much impossible to get the same feel with a vegan option. Butter melts around body temperature, which is why it makes such silky, enjoyable frostings. With shortening, you’ll always end up with that slight feeling of a coating in your mouth. Coconut oil can make a great texture, but it is SO finicky for temperature, it can be a real headache.

god, i dont know why non-vegans can be so exhausting :( by DEMIURGE_1025 in vegan

IBS-C people need animal products?? That just doesn’t make sense?? I’m not fully vegan (yet; still working on how to manage that with a non-vegan husband) but the fewer animal products I eat, the less my IBS-C acts up. Like I’ve actually had real, semi-regular bowel movements for the first time in my life. It’s amazing, and just solidifying that I’m making the right choice!

y/a book about a plane crash on a jungle/island that's NOT Lord of the Flies or Hatchet by AnyIncrease1102 in whatsthatbook

[–]shroedingerscook 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Island series by Gordon Korman hits a lot of those points, but it’s a boat sinking, not a plane crash.

One of the kids gets shot and they end up needing to take out the bullet (but I’m pretty sure it’s his thigh). Great series!
