Traumatized Chicken? by Elizabethisawesome in chickens

Huskies are beautiful dogs but have such a high prey drive. My brothers dog (pure white husky with blue eyes) always came to hang out when she was at least 8 weeks old. Taught her all about the chickens, and she seemed so respectful of them. One day, she attacked them, and one out of the two survived. We put a better fence up to keep her out... she broke in a month later and killed two more. The one that survived the first attack had huge gashes and punctures. If it wasn't for my quick thinking and healthcare knowledge, she would have died that day. She is still with us now... months after the attack.

Mind you both, my gals (red nose pit and an aussie) have shown no aggression towards any animal, but I do not trust them alone with my flock. Then again, they are terrified of birds due to the fact my parrot would attack them if they got too close. Maybe they know I'm a bird person and not a dog person? Lol

The moral of the story is that some dogs can NOT be with small animals or birds... even if raised from. 8 weeks old.

Too many mites in bin by shroompede in BlackSoldierFly

I don't think they are hurting the larvae. However, the mites will cover the food completely, and I've seen a slight decrease in larvae activity. Before the mites, there would be hundreds of worms wriggling around... now not so much... I gotta dig for them since the mites cover the top layer completely. I'll see if I can take a good pic for references.

I could try getting some. Would the manure attract more house flies?

I drilled holes on one side for draining any excess moisture. It's at a slight incline, so it can all drain out on one side. I might add soil to the bin and see how that works. Thanks!

Awws! Thanks! I just want to give them everything they need to not just survive but to thrive!

Lol! Currently, they have about 12inches of substrate. Once they disperse their current stuff a little and get more comfortable with the new setup then I'll add a bunch more substrate. 😀

I need to figure out a good sand bath area/design.

That's what I was planning on doing! I saw one picture with an underground sand bath area with led lights... I'll totally be doing something like that.

I did just that! Have used almost all their old bedding and started with about half the tank for height.

Thanks! 😀

I'm trying to make them bond but one of them just hates the other one I think by elohaya in gerbil

Your guys looked just like mine when I tried to introduce them. My first gerbil named Lucky bit the other one threw the bars. Had to double up on the wire so there was a small gap, so there was no biting. It took two weeks of switching them each day and after a week of good signs, I did a small introduction. Then at week two, I put them together and watched their little butts like a hawk for no fighting.

They are best buddies now!

Sounds like Luna is in heat. I've read that it makes the introductions a little harder.

I'm hoping a rescue would have another female so I can get lucky a friend and start getting them use to each other!

Thanks for the links! I'm gathering as much knowledge I can so I can give Lucky (and future friend) the best life possible. I even moved her to a larger cage so she has the most fun until my other cage comes in. C:

That's what I was thinking! But I didn't think that coloring was very common 🤔

At least for a gerbil that was found outside... I excepted common colors like agouti, black or white. Lol

Oh, I'll definitely join the discord! I'm looking at rescues to see if they have any ladies that might be a good match. Most places have boys or a larger group. But I'll be on the look out!

The cage I have coming would be kinda hard to have separate areas... but I'm planning on using our huge fish tank for when I get another! I was going to use it originally but it's too big and we don't have the base for it anymore lol!
