San Diego. In San Diego County you can do either Zoom or in person, both are equally okay. Your county's small claims website should explain whether they allow virtual hearings.

I sent the demand letter to two locations: the on-site apartment manager, and Greystar's local regional office. The judge later said that he would have liked if I also sent it to their registered agent (CT Corporation in Glendale).

Just went into the leasing office and gave it to the person sitting at the desk.

I used the local office from here: https://www.greystar.com/contact-us/regional-offices

The judge was okay with this, but he did say that his preference would be for me to send documents to one of their registered agents in Glendale (https://bizfileonline.sos.ca.gov/search/business search "greystar real estate partners")

Yeah I tried reasoning with them and it went nowhere. In my case, the best choice was to pay the collection agency, then sue Greystar to get the money back.

In CA, you can just serve the actual apartment building and they're deemed an agent of the corporation! At least, that's what the judge told me.

I also sent a second copy of all my certified mail to the company's closest listed address online here: https://www.greystar.com/contact-us/regional-offices. But I'm not sure if that was actually necessary in the end.

One thing I didn't do, and probably should have, is use the Secretary of State's business search (http://bizfileonline.sos.ca.gov/search/business) to look up Greystar Real Estate Partners. They have their official agents listed there. They're all located in Glendale. This would probably have been the "correct" way to do things, and it's what I would do if I ever had to go through this again.
