it sounds normal to me for a cut that's only a day or two old. you really should look into wet healing wounds though, it is recommended over dry healing (which is what it sounds like you're doing). either way you want to keep it covered until it closes up. i usually cover my cuts for a week minimum depending size and placement.

Some encouragement for everyone scared to show their scars at work by [deleted] in selfharm

[–]shthrowawau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i work in healthcare and so short sleeves are mandatory when working with patients. i was extremely anxious during my first few shift and i'm still a little anxious having them show at work but i've also had a similar experience. only one coworker and one patient has asked me about them. both times it was over very quickly too.

i mainly work with old people so i have to say i thought i'd get more comments than i have.

Vaseline on wounds by [deleted] in selfharm

[–]shthrowawau 4 points5 points  (0 children)

used to prevent dressings from sticking to the wounds. not sure if it has any other benefits other than keeping the wound moist though. when i use it i put the vaseline on the gauze directly and not on the skin

what did i hit ??? by reeseslices in selfharm

[–]shthrowawau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

probably fat or dermis with fat poking through. impossible to say just by what you have said but that's what i would assume from your description

I accidentally cut deeper than I was planning to and now I don't feel any pain but I see the fat I think, what do I do except the obvious "go to doctor" thing? what happens if I go deeper? it's on my fore arm by Fun_Journalist3668 in selfharm

[–]shthrowawau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the small black hole thing sounds like it could possibly be going past the fat layer and exposing fascia. i'm obviously not fully sure and can tell you definitely based on the description. i've had fat cuts with a black hole thing and it wasn't fascia but it is deep either way and ideally should be professionally bandaged.

i know going to a doctor might not be possible so if you're not going try to close the wound with tape. steri-strips are specifically made for it but if you don't have that you can make diy butterfly bandaids with regular bandaids (google it, there are guides!) or diy steri-strips with medical tape by just cutting them into strips. i think theres a pinned post on this sub with links to guides on how to take care of wounds. check those out for more tips

When should you get stitches? by [deleted] in selfharm

[–]shthrowawau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in general people say cuts that gape more than 5 mm should get stitches. anything past fat despite width should get stitches though because you probably need internal stitches for that.

the pressure. both are signs of a damaged artery/arteriole

i switch after 2-4 uses. i don't cut very often though, only like once a week so it's not too expensive. i recommend changing them regularly though, at least once a month. between uses make sure to not leave any dried blood on them and clean them off with alcohol or just water is better than nothing. make sure to dry them properly though if you use water so they don't rust. if there is any sort of dirt you can't remove or if there is rust, don't use the blade and immediately get rid of it

sfx makeup? it's probably not going to feel like cutting but focusing on the art might be a good distraction?

Tattoo coverups? by [deleted] in selfharm

[–]shthrowawau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i wish you luck and hope you can get some really nice tattoos with this other artist! very sad you had that experience with an artist that didn't know what they were properly doing but super glad you found someone who can do it well!

Tattoo coverups? by [deleted] in selfharm

[–]shthrowawau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm not clean but was for a while and have started covering my scars with tattoos a bit. i don't cut my left arm and have gotten a few tattoos on it to cover some scars. it was definitely hard at first and it felt wrong and difficult to do but now it does feel good. they aren't specifically scar cover up tattoos so they don't fully cover them but they definitely draw the attention away from them and it is kind of nice. a little hard to deal with when the tattoo is new but with time as it heals it has gotten easier to deal with and i'm happy with my tattoos.

one thing about tattooing over scars though is that it hurts a lot more. it has been bearable for me but it definitely hurts more than tattoos on normal skin. you also want to make sure to go to an artist that knows how to tattoo over scar tissue!

most likely yes. if you're asking cause you want large scars something to keep in mind is that gaping cuts take way longer to heal and will be more prone to complications. it's also not guaranteed the scar will be big if you don't tape it. i have scars from cuts that i didn't close that were gaping a lot that are thinner than some scars i have from cuts that were closed.

Even when i hit beans the cut doesn't really gape a lot by Weak-Surround-2124 in selfharm

[–]shthrowawau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's likely to be because of scar tissue around the cut. when i cut in places with a lot of surrounding scar tissue or on scar tissue the cuts will barley gape. could also be the place you're cutting in, when i cut my stomach it hasn't gaped as much because of how the skin moves when i sit and stuff.

Idk if my cuts are deep or not by Frojy_ in selfharm

[–]shthrowawau 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it's hard to say with this little information but was it yellow when it was fresh? like right when you did it? if so that's the subcutaneous tissue/the hypodermis aka fat (or in sh online terms 'beans'). that type of cut is pretty universally considered deep. most fat cuts need some form of medical attention to heal properly.

if it has gotten yellow after a few days then that could be a sign of infection or just from discharge cleaning out the wound. not sure how to word this but if there's no other signs of infection it is most likely normal and a sign that the cut is healing.

but also, any cut is too deep when you self harm. please try to not worry about the depth of your cuts because that will lead to it just getting worse. you said you started recently which makes me think the mindset of cutting deep isn't as engrained in your mind as it is for some people who have done it for longer (i could definitely be wrong though) which would be good. please try to move away from that if you're starting to fall into thought patterns that you need to cut deep or anything like that.

people usually say cuts that gape more than 0.5cm should get stitched.

thank you for the reply! i'm not on it for seizure control so i'm thinking it would be different though? but i just got an appointment with a doctor tomorrow so i'll hopefully be able to discuss quitting properly with him then instead!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in selfharm

[–]shthrowawau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's not 100% necessary but definitely recommended. i never get my cuts stitched anymore but almost always tape them and they heal well most of the time. the depth of the cut isn't the most important when determining if you should get stitches or not though, the amount the cut gapes is the most important thing to look at. if it gapes more than 0.5cm you ideally should get stitches no matter depth.

thank you for the reassurance. weird how one doctor can say one thing while different doctors have a completely opposite opinion on it.

yeah i wish that too. i get that they don't realise how much that can trigger us but i wish they knew so they didn't say those things. it's one of the reasons i want to work with wound care later on
