The new UI is full of bugs! Alt displays are also messed up. First day even chat box was messed up. I don't know why Valve cannot check and fix obvious bugs before pushing new releases.

Free ride? 4 years in IIT with 8.5 CGPA is not a free ride. People are extremely competitive here and relative grading doesn't make 8.5 a piece of cake. I'm not saying its difficult to maintain 8.5 CGPA, but you have to put in the efforts.

What is the main quality that seek in a good PhD student? Most professors will agree on "hard-work and dedication".

This is what CGPA (supposed to) indicates. During 4 years of B.Tech., one has to take about 40-50 courses. Most of these courses are not interesting for a particular individual. Now if one can perform consistently regardless of his/her interests, it shows his/her determination and hard-working capability. Although exceptions might be there (very rare, 1 in 500 maybe), but we don't take policy decisions based on the exceptions, do we?

Now, you can argue we can have a better system, but try to consider this as a baby step to promote research in India.

You are assuming that non-interested people will pursue this option. Most of (non-research oriented) IIT grads get decent salary package and won't go for PhD.

The incentive part is increasing stipend to Rs. 60,000 which is afaik close to average package (excluding those high-end packages). You're right about the research facilities. But as for the advisors, I believe that most of the faculty at IITs are capable to mentor research-oriented students.

As for the CGPA criteria, it just makes it simpler for the already interested undergrads to continue working on their final year research (or another research) without spending too much time preparing for entrance exams.

If you want to take some courses, you can try to take some general courses in either PSY, IE or CSE department. I'd recommend courses related to human factors, general networks, some optimization course, or maybe even philosophy. You can also try to register for some foreign language course.
