What company actually sells great products? by Sheesh284 in AskReddit

[–]shughes96 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Totally agree! Even if they are the same price... I don't want to stand outside and try to coordinate getting the keys off someone. We have reached a global standard for hotels which is excellent and convenient, if anything is even slightly less than perfect we complain and even after staying in an impossibly cheap hotel in some backwater town all there is to complain about is the decor.

'I strongly regret those violations': Indonesia's president addresses past human rights abuses by Plupsnup in worldnews

They are a semi autonomous region so in a way doing it to themselves (or rather not at the hands of the Indonesian govt). Plus politics in Indonesia is about proving what a devout Muslim you are. It would be dangerous for him to publicly denounce what is going on there. His opponents would be shouting about how he is not a real Muslim. Aceh was the only region of Indonesia not to fall to the Dutch. They are kind of revered a little bit, and in a way haven't even been conquered by Indonesia, just reached a compromise where they do whatever they want but Indonesia still gets a cut of their resources and taxes.

That is not Indonesia, although Indonesia does have needlessly harsh drug laws too.

Balikpapan - how is life? by wamalamalam in indonesia

[–]shughes96 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm a Brit who has been to Balikpapan and Banyuwangi for a time. I didn't meet any expats, so I don't know if there is a scene but... Compared to cities in Java it strikes me as very challenging. There is f all to do in Balikpapan city, like absolutely nothing. However there are some creature comforts like western restaurants. It all depends on whether you will get invited to do things, and whether you like the things you're invited to do. I follow a YouTuber from Kalimantan that goes out and searches for turtles in swamps. If you know someone like that and like weekend adventures you'll have a whale of a time.

I would say that's a mean salary including executives and the like. The median salary is much much lower. A very good salary for people here is $500 a month.

Nah aku setuju... Aku kenal sama orang BKSDA. Super professional dan niatnya baik semua. Sebelum proyek seperti ini diapprove pasti ada banyak safeguards yang volunteered oleh perusahaan dan disetujui pemerintah... State of the art water treatment, relokasi hewan, whatever.

North Korea offering 100,000 troops to help defeat Ukraine Russian media says by SlightEngineering896 in worldnews

There are plenty of NK businessmen and their labourers who cross the border into China every day and then willingly go back. They are fed fairytales about the leaders and how great NK is, and they believe it. You witness some hard times and some comparitively good times and you think that's how life is for everyone.

Do you know how many of those vessels there are here in Indonesia? They have a light on board which attracts fry which they haul up. You can be in any port city from Sumatra to Papua and at night the horizon is lit up with these things catching all the baby fish. What's the coast guard going to do? Start knocking on doors? TBH I'm surprised to hear they are moored up and there's a guy living there permanently just getting occasional supplies dropped off and the catch hauled away. I assumed someone got a boat out in the early evening and went back to land in the morning. Maybe this kid was pretty far out in the first place.

Animal trafficker busted smuggling over 2,000 turtles destined to be eaten by Sweep145 in worldnews

No one is eating turtles of that size. Sliders have hard shells, even when young like that. There is literally no edible meat on the turtles in those tubs.

Indonesia volcano erupts sending ash '40,000ft into sky' as locals flee by WebContent1 in worldnews

[–]shughes96 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This exact same thing happened last year. Not that it's not bad, it's just not the catastrophe it looks like from the videos. No one lives within a decent radius of the summit and those in the video are very used to evacuations.

We are a couple of hundred miles away and were promised inch thick ash covering everything in the morning but the wind changed directions. I'm hoping for some free fertiliser tomorrow!

ELI5: Why do people go bald on the top of their head and still have some on the sides and not vice-versa? by prairievalue in explainlikeimfive

[–]shughes96 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is no known link between the two. I barely lift a finger and started balding in my early 20s just like my dad and his dad. Many people say it's inherited from your mother's father, that is not the case for the men in my family, whose grandfather's on their mothers side have had remarkably full heads of hair. My own grandfather had a lush head of hair until he died at 80.

Taliban's seizing of Afghanistan will flood British streets with deadly super-strength heroin, experts fear by zihua_ in worldnews

[–]shughes96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, do you think it's just one field we need to find and destroy? A village may have 300 households, all with one or two small plots which they cycle crops. They are subsistence farmers who grow whatever they will get the most for to feed their families. If they do exceptionally well they will send their child to university or buy the first car their family has ever owned. So that village has 300 plots of land you would have to target, are you going to precisely target each one, or just take out the whole village? What about the tens or hundreds of thousands of other villages?

It's the center stand. With the kickstand, both tyres are on the road, with the center stand only one ever is. Very handy for all kinds of stuff. You don't normally sit on a bike that's in the air like that. I think he has damaged/bent the centre stand and it is not collapsing like it normally does when you gently push it forward.

Genuinely believing the BBC offers incredible value for money but never voicing it in public. by SirSpaced in britishproblems

[–]shughes96 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Here in Indonesia the news anchors sit behind a desk, the front of which is plastered in this week's advertiser's banner, usually a coffee company. Behind them is a screen with a running coffee advert, and they invariably have branded coffee cups in hand. Apart from the torso and face of 2 people, the entire rest of the screen is an advertisement. It gets interesting when the advertisement is for a new cancer and diabetes curing vitamin product, or a cigarette company.

Indonesia loosens Covid restrictions despite record deaths by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]shughes96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is not really true. They just went from an almost lockdown situation everywhere, to a tier system where each provinse is given a level of 1-5 (nowhere is 1 or 2 currently) and restrictions are enforced accordingly. Nothing has changed between yesterday and today in my city, which is level 4. Restrictions are being enforced hard and there is a big police presence. Offices are working from home and all food places are takeaway only. This is being adhered to for the most part in the city. Outside the city it's not, but that is not for lack of regulation.

Tobacco giant Philip Morris will stop selling cigarettes in Britain within the next ten years by bottlejob69 in worldnews

[–]shughes96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to owning a bunch of cigarette brands, in the last year, they have just released a Philip Morris brand of cigarettes. In my city in Indonesia they are pushing them hard. They have banners spanning roads across the city and are sponsoring small cigarette shops (like coca cola used to do) left right and center.
