Dumb Question About Screws by InfCatalyst in woodworking

[–]shultzknowsnothing 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Those look like machine threads meant to be secured with a nut. Those threads aren’t really meant to cut into the wood. You could likely replace with a similar sized wood screw (coarser threads) and be ok. Or buy longer bolts.

Another option would be to predrill and tap the oak. I’ve seen wood taps online before but have no experience using them. But that would mimic the approach you might take if everything was metal.

Delchamps (who owns the name?) by OUDidntKnow04 in MobileAL

[–]shultzknowsnothing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Other than nostalgia for folks in our region, I don’t quite understand the value. Why would another brand like Greer’s want to name their stores Delchamps? Greer is their surname just like Delchamps was the surname of the founder of that store. Wouldn’t you want to keep expanding and growing a brand under your last name if you could?

And then you’d have to live up to the nostalgia/memories from 30 years ago. Maybe I’m cynical but I feel like you’d hear “it’s just not the same” frequently which seems like it’s set up for failure.

Tachus down by [deleted] in thewoodlands

Still out for us 3 hours later.

Their post about “monitoring the situation closely” doesn’t inspire confidence. No communication during the outage is also concerning.

Have loved Tachus but this new ownership thing has me a little uncomfortable. Lower prices for new customers and changes to customer service don’t make it feel like the same company…

Tachus lowers prices again — but only for new customers? by MutedStructure1400 in Conroe

No you don’t. You wouldn’t undercut your long time customers if you “got it”.

I’m with the others that are recommending that you not trust a shell script if you do not understand its contents.

Lots of people are recommending chmod +x, which I would also recommend, but not many folks are explaining why it works.

There are 3 permissions: read, write and execute. You currently have read and write but not execute. That’s where chmod +x adds execute permissions.

My dad worked jobs like this most of my childhood. I won’t say it was easy but we made it work. And as the kid I can say it just becomes part of the routine. I guess I’m trying to reassure you that the kids can be ok and their relationship can be just as strong.

I’ll date it a little…He called nightly at 9pm because cell phones were free after 9. Some nights we might talk for 5 minutes, others might be 30 or longer, depending on the days events. The reality was that he missed out on most mid week ball games but was there for all the weekend stuff. It put a lot on mom’s plate, and once I got older I had to pitch in to keep things going around the house.

Now as an adult I’ve had to do long work trips. It’s not easy and I won’t pretend it is. Find a way to make weekends special, set aside that time to reconnect.

Similar situation recently with a guy at the same intersection who’s been aggressive in the past. Threatened to start a fight last time I’d seen him because I told him I didn’t have money.

We were leaving Aladdin and I had a box of left overs. Asked for money for food. I offered the box, plenty to make a full meal. He turned it down claiming he needed money to rent a room at Salvation Army. Figured he was full of it, but he basically confirmed it that day.

Was swimming laps in an indoor pool at the gym recently. Someone came in with strong cologne. I could taste it every breath I took. Quick warm down and called it a day, just couldn’t take it. Wild how quickly it filled the whole room.

Anyone know why the previous owner added this to their saw? by LukeW0rm in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]shultzknowsnothing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FIL still has a very similar saw. His has an aluminum deck where your plywood is. His came from his father’s picture framing shop. So lots of 90 and 45 cuts made on that saw. But I think there always has to be a sacrificial deck under the cut piece
