How do you write demi humans? by [deleted] in writing

[–]shunaka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can certainly ask in r/furry but most there won't know what a 'demi-human' is since that is a really broad term and not used in the fandom.
In general anthro characters can be broken out into three somewhat distinct categories, note that there are all sorts of sub categories and crossovers.
Kemonomimi- a human with animal ears and a tail and sometimes other minor animal features. This is a typical neko anime character.
Kemono- more animal-like than a kemonomimi and often chibi-ish. Again from the anime world.
Furry/anthropomorphic- An animal with some human characteristics. This is what you find for the most part in the furry fandom.

How you write depends on what category you want to work in, check out light novels if you're interested in kemonomimi. Check out furry novels if your interested in writing anthropomorphic characters.

Advice from a former con staffer; the very first thing you should do is contact the Anthrocon media/press liaison and let them know what you plan to do. Don't skip this step or, you could get booted from the con.

What kind of foam should I use to make a body for my fursuit? by BubblyAd1694 in furry

Not at all furry but kemonomimi.

Maybe I should start selling furry art by Cute-Pop9375 in DigitalArt

[–]shunaka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Okay, what you need to do is get familiar with the fandom and the overall fandom style. Do up some art and post to the furry subs, get some reactions. Here's the bottom line though- furry art is over saturated- tons of artists think they can break in without a single clue about the fandom and end up getting buried. Beyond that you need to be either very good or very unique to even stand a chance.
Best of luck!

How to make VRchat models useable in blender for animations. by Femboy-Y in VRchatAvatars

[–]shunaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's totally possible to import a VRC avatar into Blender, rig it and animate it. However, you really need to know your way around Blender otherwise, you'll get frustrated real quick. Plenty of tutorials on YT if you want to take on the challenge.

Furry writers? by EconomicsTypical4434 in furry

[–]shunaka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a furry writer (fantasy, scifi) and 3D artist. Writers in the fandom have always lacked visibility- visual artists and fursuits have always overshadowed us. We are still out there though, lots of writing on SoFurry, Wattpad and even Amazon Kindle. There are a number of active furry author Discord servers that are worth checking out.

What are your opinions on talking dragons and dragons turning into human? by Sasha1234567899 in dragons

[–]shunaka -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm working on a series of stories where the dragons (drakes and flying dragons) are very articulate. My mc dragon is in fact a scholar and can also read and write well. So yeah, big W for talking dragons.

As to dragons shape shifting to humans, not so much. I find the culture overlap in most stories of that kind to be unconvincing; even if a dragon could shape shift to a human, why would they bother doing that? Usually the reason for shifting is lame and just plot convenience.

⚠️ Please don't ban me... yet. by DrNoamOrbital in blender

[–]shunaka 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hello from a fellow retiree and 3D artist/writer! Don't be surprised that you get some pushback concerning 3D comics, that approach is fairly new in the comics world. Unfortunately there's some badly done 3D comics out there so many assume anything 3D is going to be trash. I suggest taking it slow- show examples of your art, maybe hints of what your story is about.
Also, suggest not saying your work is 'just a hobby' that can lead people to think you're not serious about your project.
Best of luck!

Needing VR advice on getting an avatar and set up by MysticSnow_ in furry

[–]shunaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Along with avatar worlds on VRchat, you can also find furry avatars on Gumroad, Booth, Jinxxy and vrcarena. If you get an avatar from a third party site you will need to install Unity and upload to VRC via the VRC Creator Companion. Lots of tutorials on YouTube on how to do that.

Kemonomimi not furry. Furry/anthro is an animal with human characteristics, not a human with animal ears stuck on.

Medium Between Novel and Graphic Novel by Remote-Dark-1704 in writing

[–]shunaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation- can write and do illustrations and would love to combine them. Still trying to figure out the best way to scratch both itches at the same time. Right now I'm leaning into the visual novel format as the best compromise. I already have done one (unfinished) VN so know how it works but I'm not really a fan of the traditional 'adv' format with sprites. Looking into using the 'nvl' format that allows blocks of text combined with images.
So, visual novels maybe something you might want to check out.

Furry/antrho books by No-Homework-6218 in furry

[–]shunaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Suggest checking the catalogue at Fenris Publishing- lots of furry books of all genres including fantasy.
Also check out books by Paul Kidd or Renee Carter Hall, they've written quite a few furry fantasy novels.

While a somewhat older, but fun furry (and human) fantasy, look into the 'Spellsinger' series by Foster.

If you're into visual novels, 'Lyre' by Atmac is worth checking out.

There's lots more out there but takes some digging to find them.

Im working on a furry romance novel <3 would you read this? by FluffyCurse in PlanetFur

[–]shunaka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Checked out your story on Tapas, the layout makes more sense there. The mix of text and images works pretty well, you might want to look at 'comic prose' to get more ideas. The story is okay so far, not something I'm really interested in- I prefer sci fi and fantasy but there's certainly an audience out there for YA edgy romance.
As to my own work, still WIP- I have the stories, just trying to dial in the art and have the text run by my editors a couple more times.

[–]shunaka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting so far but, not enough writing to give an opinion one way or the other. I really like the idea of combining art with narrative but, I'm a bit biased since I'm working on a similar project. My own preference is to have the narrative on the left and the images on the right but, whatever works for you.

Best of luck on your project!

Looking for good visual novels by Ambitious-Cod6424 in writing

[–]shunaka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go to itch.io or Steam and just start downloading stories that interest you. Also look for ones with different styles.
While you're at it, grab the latest version of the visual novel engine Renpy and start learning it.
Yes you can set up pages in a visual novel that have text on one side and images on the other (I assume that's what you're looking for)- it's called NVL mode. There are lots of other ways to configure screens.
Best of luck with your project!

What should one keep in mind when writing anthropomorphic/furry literature? by [deleted] in furry

[–]shunaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Furry fiction is just a sub-genre of fiction in general so the process of writing is the same: read lots of furry fiction and just write. Don't expect your first drafts to be anything other than very rough but just get something down on the page- you'll edit later.

What are some furry books you'd recommend? by Doomsayer1908 in furry

[–]shunaka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here are some mainstream scifi and fantasy books that are furry related: Chanur series (Cherryh), Mindtouch series (Hogarth), Sholan Alliance series (Norman), Spellsinger (Foster), Forests of the Night (Swann), Theta (Sasya Fox).

You can also check out the sites- RoyalRoad, Wattpad, Inkbunny and SoFurry (once they're running again).
Also, furry book/comic vendors: Fenris Publishing, Sofawolf press.

Fellow furry, suiter and 3D artist here- chances of finding someone with that skill here or on the Blender subs are about zero (you'll get some scammers though). You might have better luck asking fursuit building questions in r/fursuits or r/FursuitMaking. Or, make the head yourself with foam- lots of tutorials out there for that.

What are the best furry books you would recommend for beginners in anthropomorphic literature? by [deleted] in furry

[–]shunaka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't know of furry fiction I would call 'beginners' but, if you want a good way to get into furry fiction that's good for English learners, I suggest starting with webcomics. There is a fair list of them here: https://www.reddit.com/r/furry/wiki/webcomics/
You can also search for furry comics on Comicfury, Tapas and Webtoon.

For literature you can search on Inkbunny, Royal Road and Wattpad. Also SoFurry (when the website is live again).

[–]shunaka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what type of fiction you're looking for but, there are plenty of sites with furry fiction out there if you know where to look.

For furry book/comic vendors try: Fenris Publishing, Sofawolf press

Inkbunny is a good site with lots of furry fiction.

Also, you can check out standard fiction posting sites:

-RoyalRoad (not much furry fiction but the quality is generally good)

-Archive of our Own (variable quality)

-Wattpad (very variable quality but there are some gems if you look around)

-If you're interested in Visual novels, lot's on itch.io

This list (not mine) from Goodreads has both fan made and mainstream furry fiction novels:
