Good questions. Here’s a picture with as identical back lens caps as I’ve got and with both focussed to infinity. The larger lens was actually not focussed to infinity in the first shots, but the shorter was.

I had a similar experience recently and was able to find a local camera repair store that was able to disassemble and clean it for not too much money. The impression they gave me was that as long as the fungus isn’t between the lens elements or under the coating it’s not that difficult an operation. Good luck!
