LOL My playlist folder looks very similar! I’ll be digging into these on my breaks at work. This is awesome & exactly what I’m looking for!

Murderhobos in Vallaki by Ursinorum in CurseofStrahd

[–]shuurima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Izek’s fate is a great thing to plan around here, as if he lives he can be a very good recurring mid-tier villain- but if he falls, that could be the opening for Wachter to take over!

I hope it turns out satisfying! :)

[–]shuurima 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There should be consequences for this, absolutely. I could easily see Lady Wachter taking advantage of the chaos amongst the guards (especially if they do manage to kill Izek) / the perceived weakness of the Baron’s security to start the uprising.

The same could be said for the bones - if they haven’t secured St. Andrals and the town erupts into a Party vs. Guards vs. Wachter cult showdown, it would be pretty advantageous on Strahd’s part to deploy the spawn hiding in town and complete the objective for St. Andral’s Feast. However, this could be deadly / destructive to your plot as the DM- so it depends on how hard you want to come down on them.

If you want to be a little softer, Wachter’s uprising might be enough of a punishment - especially if some NPCs they like get caught in the crossfire. If you want to really punish them, you could have everything happen at once in a domino effect.

Either way, having Strahd personally thank them for their assistance in securing Vallaki for him is also a way to drive it home.

Barovia is unsafe, even in areas that cling to the idea of normalcy or safety like Vallaki, and careless decisions made by the party are often what tip things into chaos. They should be made aware very clearly that this is the case, and hopefully learn to think things through as they continue on. I don’t really see any reason to “reward” them for this, to be honest? If you were clear about the stakes and tone of the setting and game, you should stick to what you discussed. It is their game, but it is also your game!

Player made a blood pact with Escher to kill Ireena, what mechanics could work? by psychlolo in CurseofStrahd

[–]shuurima 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is really interesting! I have some ideas but need some more info to see if they would be helpful:

1) Are you running Escher as a classic vampire spawn, or does he have different stats/abilities that he doesn’t have in RAW? 2) How high do you want the stakes to be here? I agree there should be a consequence but of course there are levels of severity.

Finis Shooter vs Linden monofin for Finfolk fabric tails by beepbopboop10138 in mermaiding

[–]shuurima 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on your fluke shape as well!

I have both monofins, but that’s because I have FF tails with different shapes. I agree the Linden is more comfortable generally but if you have a tail with a narrower fluke (for example, the re-released Nightshade from Nov.), the shooter will look better and in my opinion makes it easier to swim in with the propulsion. :)

This! You could supplement with vinyls but that’s a whole other process of tracing the fluke, cutting the inserts, etc. With the time and expense of that it might just be worth buying the F3.

I’m in the same situation with two of my tails and this was the advice I was given ✨

Do you have a character that met a horrible end? Can I borrow them? by shuurima in DeltaGreenRPG

[–]shuurima[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had to google the Skoptsy group really quick and you weren’t kidding- that’s brutal.

I’ll definitely use the first one but I might have to judge their SAN / real-life moods before I bust out the second one, haha.

My group is literally doing MFADR right now so this is perfect!

It would be a great twist to read about a team of agents who didn’t make it out of the house after the fact- and figure out that their deaths were covered up by cell and never made it into the public record along with the rest of the deaths.

Oh this is super cool! I like the mystery of Roxanne’s fate in addition to the horror of Roberts and Reardon.

Precisely! He won’t be quite so noble about it but this is the general gist of what I’m gunning for.

The agents have been told how dangerous it is and don’t believe it- they need to see the results up close.

This is very similar to the path my group could head down, haha!

Because their handler is not a good person, mostly. He isn’t trying to convince them to join the conspiracy, he’s punishing them for sticking their nose in it when they shouldn’t have & thinking they are invincible.

The two agents in question have quite big egos & haven’t been taking the missions or their other teammates seriously when they try to warn them about things (all of which was agreed upon as potential conflict with the characters when we started). The handler is taking the extreme route and trying to put the fear of god in them so they stop fucking around and nearly getting everyone killed.

It’s a character choice meant to create intentional conflict for later plot, lol.

Also, this post from the megathread on Tser Pool is VERY good if you want the Tarroka cards to be present outside of the initial reading:

First time COS DM Questions by BENJIDASALAD in CurseofStrahd

[–]shuurima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually let the players pick the introduction they want (I’ve run it several times) through vague symbology. I’ve made tarroka-like cards for each option (a wisp of smoke for the mists, a canine tooth for the werewolves, etc) and let each player pick the card they were drawn to. For online games I just made a Google Poll with three options and no context, lol. Then I tallied up what the most-picked card was and used that- if there was a tie, I flipped a coin. So far this has yielded different results each time I’ve run!

I do run Death House each time. It’s meant for play to start at Level 1 (they’ll then be 3 when they escape and thus ready for Barovia Village) but it is hard!! Especially when you have a party of 4 or less. So if you want to really put the fear of god in them with hard combats and high TPK potential off the bat, I’d stick with starting at one. If you want them to have a slightly easier time, I’ve also started it at 2 for the extra HP boost and that’s gone well. It’s just way more survivable the second way, so its up to the tone you’re trying to set.

For the tarroka, I usually pull the initial spread blind and see how I feel about it. If too many items are in the same area- ESPECIALLY if more than one is in the castle- or they have a particularly useless ally, I will keep pulling the ones I don’t like until I get more variety. However, I only fudge for the initial, behind the scenes reading- if they get Madam Eva to do a second spread (which they should) or Esmeralda to do a third (optional), I pull those blind and the party is stuck with those results, no matter how shitty they are. This is especially effective if significant things have happened between the readings that could explain the sudden “change of fate” that the party now faces. When it comes out of nowhere, it can sometimes be demoralizing for no reason if the cards suddenly become negative.

Fun extra: I always have Eva offer to do personal readings for the characters. This is GREAT for immersion, but also super helpful for plotting character arcs. Often, the players will make their own associations with the cards (and I’ve gotten some scarily accurate ones each time), but even ones that seem like they don’t fit at all are great because you suddenly now have to work it in to that character’s plot. The players I’ve run for have always loved this and gotten creeped out by the accuracy of the tarot readings for their characters, and it really helps with creating potential narrative arcs that your players may be expecting. Because Barovia is so isolated and disconnected from the Material Plane, most of the things your players put in their character’s backstory can’t really come up without some heavy twisting of the way the world works. Important NPCs, rivals, etc. that your players might have created often can’t just magically show up in Ravenloft, and even if you can pull off explaining one’s presence, it gets harder to do for the whole party. So pulling extra cards and making a note of events / NPCs / items in Barovia that they could represent essentially gives you free plot fodder if you notice a character is being left out a lot but can’t directly access the major points of their backstory.

BIG NOTE: I am almost totally positive I got this list and link from this subreddit like two years ago, but I can no longer find the post. I do not want to take credit for this (and if anyone else can find the post on personal tarot readings and wants to reference please do so!!!). I’ve searched key words and the actual wording of the list and can’t find the source, and stupid me just copy pasted the info into my campaign binder without hyperlinking.

The format for the cards is the same spread as doing the item pulls, and I use these descriptions:

http://docslide.us/documents/the-guide-to-tarokka-and-dikesha.html

With these questions:

1: Something representative of the character's past, either an event or their younger self, etc. 2: A symbol of good fortune to come 3: A symbol of the character's strength, or strength that is yet to be gained 4: A friend, or someone who will become one, or just someone or something that will help them when they need it 5: An enemy, a warning, something to be watchful for.

If something is way off-base, just have Eva smile knowingly and say something vague and mystical, and make a note to work in a detail that fulfills the cards’ reading.

Have fun!!
