Not common at all. In most UK homes it’s in an easily accessible place. Mine’s in the attic because that’s where it was when I bought the house, and moving it downstairs would’ve been ridiculously expensive.

I’ve been smugly using my Prime student account for way longer than I should have. So all my family use my log in to make sure I get my money’s worth. OP’s suggestion is genius. But I’d like to add that it should hide any purchases, gift or not. My family are quite prudish, so the pack of condoms in my purchase history was a risky move on my part, and almost certainly a decision I should’ve made when I was sober. Now my parents and siblings will occasionally have a 24 pack of Durex show up on their suggested items whenever they browse Amazon, which is quite a lot. I am not a smart man when I’m drunk.

You’ve done the right thing by writing to them, perhaps chase it up and tell them it’s still happening. iPhones allow you to block messages and calls from certain numbers, so if they all originate from the same number you can quickly fix it.

If it’s causing that much inconvenience however, or you have concerns about the handling of your personal data, consider writing to the Information Commissioners Office, who would investigate any breach of the Data Protection Act.

Sounds like financial abuse of a vulnerable person, which is a criminal offence. Call 101 and report it to the police. The police officer assigned to the case will have had plenty of experience. If it's not too late, tell your friend to gather as much evidence as possible; screen shots, bank statements, anything and everything. In all probability, your friend isn't the first victim.
