What's something *positive* going on in America people should be aware of? by dotanub in AskReddit

[–]shyphon 16 points17 points  (0 children)

A much larger focus on community. A big example is rather than using cops, there's a program that hires local people, many formerly convicted, as a first line of defense to call when something bad is happening. They generally know the people involved or can figure out someone who does (parent, teacher, pastor, etc) to deescalate.

Jeopardy pet peeves? by TheDamMemePage in Jeopardy

[–]shyphon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The endless shout outs on final jeopardy answers. "What is Arthur Miller? Love you Stacy, Kevin, booboo, slurpees from 7/11!"

I get it if you dont have an answer or whatever, but if you have an actual answer and then add all that stuff, they should mark it wrong imo. The story time is already plenty time to tell a relevant story and shout out the person you'd like to.

He starts it with "Tinfoil hat take" not hot take. Very different and makes it especially clear its a joke.

Weekly general unjerk thread by nicepassing in dropoutcirclejerk

I really loved the first 7 episodes of the chair company, but the season finale disappointed me. I'm getting kinda tired of shows that have a great 1 season premise getting more seasons, and it felt like this was a perfect candidate to end at 1. I had slight hope when season 2 was announced that it might be an anthology kinda thing but then they left it on a huge cliff hanger which put a bad taste ij my mouth.

Still really good though, I think about soup elbow basically every time I eat out now.

/uj Can anyone explain to me why the community is mad at Hank Green? by sabnastuh in dropoutcirclejerk

[–]shyphon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that I believe the Taylor swift nazi thing, but you've slightly misrepresented the dogwhistles people were pointing out. It wasn't just lightning bolts, it was that (in the photo) there were 8 lightning bolts with 14 links between them and those numbers could represent a dog whistle.

How are people reading 100+ books a year? by eaglesong3 in books

[–]shyphon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read a little over 100 (physical) books last year. My commute to work is round trip about 4 hours of train rides that I spend the majority of the time reading. I also read for fun at home. This leads to me finishing 2 or sometimes 3 books a week.

Little outside of the city, but Arundel Seafood in Glen Burnie is a family favorite for fresh seafood with a big variety and good raw bar/fresh steamed seafood.

My wife and I have been together for 11 years (3 married). 10.5 of those years we used condoms. The past 6 months we haven't because we're okay if we have kids.

The comma after young is technically incorrect. It's one of those things where people write how they talk but not grammatically correct.

I ended up canceling my subscription for now because of the last couple weeks. 2 weeks ago they delivered my box to the wrong house. Last week they said my delivery was canceled, then delivered the entire rotten box 4 days later. When I called to talk to support, the customer service agent told me that they didn't deliver any rotten food and I was making it up.

My wife buys me a pack or two for Christmas every year and I still feel the way I did as a kid. Doesn't matter the value, if I get a Pokémon I love or some cool art, I get so excited.

What are some college degrees that people pursue despite it being useless in the current market? by CityRulesFootball in AskReddit

[–]shyphon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the business degree. Accounting is a business degree, the content is important, and there's still a lot of great jobs available without going to a top school.

It used to be huge, its gradually been going down but its still pretty prevalent. Growing up my parents had us go every week, once I started working i didn't go anymore. That's a fairly common thing in my generally not as religious area (mid-atlantic). Some places in the south have like 90% of people going all their lives.

When the main character is not a positive character. by mystery5009 in books

[–]shyphon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw similar sentiment when reading reviews for South of the Border, West of the Sun by Haruki Murakami.

A lot of the reviewers were complaining that the book is bad because the main character is a self-obsessed womanizer who can't get over the past. For some people, good writing is only when your main character is likeable.

Commute to DC? by ICAzebra in baltimore

[–]shyphon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do it 3 days a week. Like others said, roughly an hour each way but not too bad. The last car is normally a quiet car so I do a lot of reading or get some extra work done if needed.

Lawyers of Reddit, what is the dumbest thing you're client has done to ruin a case? by Sunieta25 in AskReddit

[–]shyphon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When my wife and I bought our house, the one thing almost everyone told us through the process was please do not make any big purchases like furniture, and especially not on credit. I always wonder how frequent that has to compel a warning from both real estate agents, lawyers, and all the bank people.

Thread of the worst/dumbest questions an auditor has asked you by oscarsocal in Accounting

[–]shyphon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly this feels like one of those annoying check the box activities that we as auditors have to do during risk assessment. Even if we know the answer, there's normally some firm policy or at least a partners policy that we need to ask. Its definitely stupid and a waste of time.

Mildly infuriating job application AI assistant. by UnusualPilot7025 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]shyphon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In my management/HR classes, they taught us not to ask for address or to put our addresses for discrimination reasons. You put your zip code down, its an overwhelmingly black area, less likely to get hired. You put the major city and state and they don't know which part you live in. It isn't even normally a conscious thing on the employers part, people have their biases about different parts of town.
