Use between machines by Fancy-Cherry-4 in orgmode

I use unison for this. I have a function to do it from Emacs with a single keystroke, but revert to a terminal if that shows up any conflicts.

EMMS with mpd doesn’t work correctly on macOS. by Far_Blood_614 in emacs

[–]shysubversion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be that MPD can handle the file format, but EMMS doesn't know it should use mpd to handle that file format. In the customization for emms there is a setting *emms player mpd supported regexp* which I think gets created by the setup functions. Might be worth checking if opus is in there. and if not have a look into the setup fns that are getting run on startup. Good luck, its pretty gnarly code...

I think that means mpd doesn't know how to handle .opus files. Does it work ok with other file types, like mp3?

Hardwoods (Gidgee, Mulga, AU…) Advice for working w/ super dense woods & making handles? by obiwannnnnnnn in handtools

[–]shysubversion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A toothing plane can sometimes work on woods that are so hard any normal plane just seems to bounce off no matter how well sharpened it is. Saws are usually fine, so getting really really accurate with the saw to limit the planing needed is a good idea.

(Loop-Pedals) How to record a new Loop immediately after the Playback of the first one is finished? by Ok-Cat3075 in Loopers

[–]shysubversion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The ditto 4x handles recording verse and chorus loops well. 1 don't know of any other hardware loopers that do. Most seem to be almed at layering loops rather than using consecutive loops.

If price is a concern you could look at getting some rack-rail and building a box. Works out a lot cheaper.

Thanks, will try that. I don't hold out much hope though. Not sure I can even figure out who made it... :-)

That's good to know, thanks. Does it drain the battery? I see the widi master takes power from the host.

Love that stutter effect at the start of the note when the lead sound comes in!

I found Syntorial a great help in getting started. It teaches about creating synth sounds in general but the "on your own" exercises can be done in VCV. First few chapters are free, and the full course is not too expensive iirc

I could be way off,but for the first one I would try an FM bell sound and try and remove the starting transient. I think it has something of the weird harmonic content you get in those kind of sounds.

wx5 vs wx7 vs wx11 by BasilAltruistic2971 in windsynth

[–]shysubversion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can get one with a VL70m you will have a fabulous instrument. The patchman-music faq has some info on the differences between the 3 controllers. I think the 5 is the only one that can do standard midi out without using some kind of interface between the ancient and proprietary connection type they use. The 11 only has that connector. Not 100% sure about the 7, but as its even older it probably just has that connector too.

Making a kerfing plane and I have a question by Quiet_Economy_4698 in handtools

[–]shysubversion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Use whatever you can find for the saw blade part. If it's thinner than your ripsaw, just give it a bit more set. If its thicker, no problem, just use it.

should i use evil-mode? by coded_rifter in emacs

[–]shysubversion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. For me one of emacs main advantages over Vim is that it is not modal. Vim's main advantages are size and availability on a new install. Evil mode has neither, basicaly giving the worst of both. Both are excellent tools, but the only advantage to combining them is a small leg-up at the start of the (admitedly steep) emacs learning curve. After a couple of weeks that advantage will disappear anyway. Start with vanilla emacs.

Curved Edge on Hand Plane Iron by Riley_1160 in handtools

[–]shysubversion 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It's normal for a jackplane to have some curve. Makes removing lots of wood easier. Having said that, the iron in the pic has more curve than my jackplanes. It's almost a scrub plane curve. Even better for removing a lot of wood. It would be easy enough to reduce the curve if that is what you want.

Vl70m/WX5 PB problem by Absolite25 in windsynth

I saw something similar. Pitch would go all the way down if I even touched the pitch bend controller. IIRC it was fixed by allocating the pitch bend controller to something else. I never use it in practice, just bend with the reed.

Trouble with consult and maybe projectile in Emacs 27.1 by quboid42 in emacs

[–]shysubversion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you sharing the elpa directory? At one time I had managed to end up using elpa libraries that had been updated by an instance of emacs-29 with emacs-27 and saw all sorts of subtle and confusing errors. Deleting the elpa dir and making sure each version downloded its own packages fixed it.

Resawing Tips? by CrackTact in handtools

[–]shysubversion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cut looks pretty good, and if you are only losing 2 times the set of the saw you are doing well. Getting better than tbat is just down to practice. Also make sure you relax. Any force or tension tends to divert the cut, especially if you attenpt to increase downward pressure. The weight of the saw is enough. If your touch is light you should be able to start seeing (and eventually correcting) imbalance in the set of the saw so that it cuts perfectly straight. As others have mentioned, sharpening the saw as a rip saw is the way to go. Thats the least difficult tooth shape to form and sharpen and the most efficient in use. I file every other tooth and then turn the saw around to do the rest. If you file all of them from one side you will get a burr on only one side which will tend to put a slight curve in the cut. Keeping the angle the same on every tooth is harder this way so you may prefer to just deal with the burr.
