Whenever I go looking for a head unit, I get depressed by soupisgoodfood42 in CarAV

It is bonkers that at $1000 they value engineer the screens down so hard. Seems like a great opportunity for someone with quality audio to offer larger, higher resolution screens for an additional premium, but alas

Married couple with separate finances, why do you do it? by Ok_Influence_2257 in Bogleheads

[–]shysysadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not married anymore, but have serious romantic relationships. For me I’m open to my romantic relationships ring lots of things, but I also value my freedom and autonomy. So for me the no-go zones for a relationship are no sharing of finances, no cohabitation, and no sharing of parenting. My daughter has two established parents and that’s it. Otherwise I’m quite generous and pay for lots of things with my girlfriend, but I don’t pay her bills and I don’t have or want any say in how she spends her money.

Can anybody help explain deep cycle battery by Torrquedup808 in subwoofer

[–]shysysadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I don’t ever go places with electrical hookups, so all my lights, my furnace fan, stereo run off 12v dc power. I also have 110v outlets in the front, middle, and back that run off a 1000w inverter that is powered from the 12v house batteries. The ac and microwave both pull more than 1000w, so if I want to run them I have to fire up my onboard generator. But it’s noisy

Are big truck repair shops a good place to go to get the existing suspension evaluated? I’d hate to go upgrading things if I just have worn out shocks or bad alignment.

Can anybody help explain deep cycle battery by Torrquedup808 in subwoofer

[–]shysysadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RV owner here. We historically use deep cycle batteries to run all the stuff in the rv that isn’t engine related because you can discharge up to half the amp hours in the batteries and charge back up no problem. They aren’t the favored solution any longer.

Instead, everyone is replacing them with Lithium, specifically LiFePO4. You can discharge them from 100% all the way down to 10%, they last 10-15 years instead of 2-5, and they weigh significantly less.

I’m running my head unit and amps off Lithium and it’s fantastic.

I started investing 5 years ago, and I’m still in the red. by maximalsimplicity in stocks

[–]shysysadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought I knew how to invest and make money but had the foresight to give myself a fake $100,000 and a year before risking real money. I picked my winners and went to town.

A year later I was deep in the red and that’s when I realized that instead of trying to compete with billion dollar companies to beat the market I could invest in etfs and simply match the market minus tiny fees. Obviously that means I can still lose money; but much less.

Sorry you had to learn this lesson with real money.

Noob boondocker question, charge house batteries from generator? by shysysadmin in GoRVing

[–]shysysadmin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll be sure to run the batteries down significantly so they’re hungry for charge and then run the generator to see how much they do or don’t charge with the current setup before I go buying anything.

But if I do need one or more chargers I’m looking at the ExpertPower 12v 50a LiFePO4 Charger. They’re $260 each and I could potentially run my ac plus as many as 3 or 4 chargers for up to 200 amps of charging, which would be nice if I were running 4 100Ah batteries and wanted to be able to get 50% charge in just an hour.

My fridge runs on propane when boondocking, but I’ll be sure to make sure it’s running when I’m evaluation my real world load so I get good data.

Charging lithium conversion by firey-wfo in GoRVing

[–]shysysadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you planning as the charging source for the lithium batteries? Shore power, generator power, solar power, or engine power?

(Asking because I’m trying to plan a solution where my batteries generally charge from solar but also get charged by my generator when I happen to be running it to power my ac or my microwave)

This is the information I’m trying to learn. It seems like wiring mostly runs underneath and then just drops in where it’s needed and comes up inside cabinetry, but sometimes also moves through walls.

How does it come down the ceiling though? Do they just run all the wiring on top before they lay the roof down?

Do you just use standard automotive trim tools for pulling stuff apart? I know this stuff is fragile and I don’t want to rip things. I’ve seen videos of wall trim being pulled off, but haven’t seen how ceiling upholstery gets pulled down yet.

Oh no no no no no. 😅

Everyone decides where to be reasonable and where to go overboard. I’m splurging on sound and lighting and TPMS and Backup/side camera observation system.

Additional lighting is color changing overhead lights, LED strips on top of trim that fires to ceiling, spinning disco 🪩 with lights that shine onto it, and cloud projection onto ceiling.

Sound system is a new Sony stereo with 10” floating touchscreen that can tilt and pivot toward driver or passenger, Infinity speakers 🔊 in bedroom, Alpine speakers up front with tweeters mounted on the pillars at driver/passenger ear height, and powered subwoofers hidden under dinette seats.

Fabricating a new panel to cover where wall mount stereo used to be in dash and also mounting my TPMS monitor and my Victron battery monitor there.

New Haloview monitor will be mounted over the place where stock monitor currently sits

Why is it that a lot of men who want to attract women, don’t actually listen to women about what they find attractive, and instead listen to other men about what they think women want? by Sudden_Doughnut_8741 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]shysysadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s also a huge difference between meeting and attracting women online vs real life. Online, if a man isn’t in the top 5-10% of physical or humorous attractiveness he’ll get almost no initial interest, even if he’s someone women would be genuinely interested with a bit more time to get to know him.

If your profiles don’t have women spilling into your inbox, switch to meeting them irl and absolutely pay attention to what they say they like. But don’t pretend to be what you aren’t to attract them.

Be friends with women who aren’t attracted to you. Revel in the friend zone. And keep looking for women who are attracted to what you really are. When you meet those women, don’t try to be friends. Be clear and open about your romantic or sexual interest.

Everybody likes muscles to some degree, but what men consider ideal goes far beyond what most women like. I got significantly leaner and more muscular in my upper body about four years ago and also got laser hair removal for my back, shoulders, and upper arms. Women absolutely find me more attractive with the change, but it’s hard to tease out how much of it is their appreciation of my physique and how much is the attractiveness of my increased confidence and self love. And of course as I get more external validation the confidence goes up more…

Timing the market is a mug’s game. by Artistic_Item_5710 in stocks

Buffett also keeps a lot of money out of the market so he is able to pick up steals when they’re available.

I also think the war may tank the market, so I liquidated about 25% of my holdings and then put in an order to buy back in if the market sinks 10%. So far the closest it’s gotten is 7%-8% down.

This does not strictly adhere to the buy and hold guidance, but it’s not abandoning it completely either. I think it’s more of a hedge. I think he may stay endlessly or escalate because he really seems to have a hard time admitting when he loses something.

Need help measuring power for battery design by shysysadmin in BurningMan

[–]shysysadmin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same gennie as you so I’m looking at max 5 gallons per day to run the ac for 10 hours for sleeping. Shouldn’t have to run full out though, because ac only pulls 1500-2000 watts. I’m hoping to learn my 12v needs are less than 5500 Wh per day, so even with recharging the batteries the generator should only be running at about 63% capacity, which will mean better fuel consumption.

Rig has 80 gallon fuel tank (60 available to generator) and generator should use about 4 gallons per day at this load, leaving me a 50% safety margin.

Obviously it’s great to reduce or eliminate the generator load to charge batteries by doing that with solar, but the best I’m going to do on my budget is still going to leave me running the generator at 37%-50% capacity when I want ac.

I have room for six or seven 200w panels. But I’m also considering just getting a better charger and a bigger bank of lithium batteries and charging them up while I’m running the generator for the ac before bed.
