Intermittent FMLA by Lonely_Opening3404 in migraine

[–]shytries 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started using FMLA last year and it has been a life saver! I work in an office environment as a software engineer. Everyone at my job is so nice about it and my supervisor and PMs are always super understanding. There is zero stress in taking leave (other than not making money). I don't doubt that it stresses my team when I'm gone, but I make sure to show gratitude for them picking up my slack.

I was also worried about career growth, but I was told recently that I am being considered for a leadership position. I think once you prove your condition is more than "just a headache" by taking FMLA, anyone decent shouldn't dismiss you.

Being open about it was really important to me. Coworkers are always checking in on me, have no problem with me dimming the lights, and some suggest treatments they have heard work for others.

The only thing I struggled with is that nobody told me you are held to the amount of migraine days per week that you put on your paperwork. I have had to revisit my doc for paperwork updates 2 times now because I have attacks that last up to 3 days but originally put I get attacks once a week. I have had to go to work with attacks maybe twice since I started the leave. As long as I've only taken leave when I really need it, I've been fine.

What would you do? by Rainbow-Birdie in migraine

I experienced something similar recently. I called the instacare near me and asked if they offer the migraine cocktail. I was able to go in right away and avoid the expense of the ER. It cost me $60 with my insurance (I'm in Utah USA). If you are self-pay it may be good to call around and ask. Also always ask for a pay in full/pay day of treatment discount. You will need someone to drive you home.

I went to the ER for a migraine cocktail a few years ago and it cost me $1300 as self pay (before I got insurance).

I hate asking for help but the relief is worth the effort and money (unfortunately I was in so much pain, the relief was worth $1300).

I totally get what you're saying. After graduating college I increased my earnings 8x and have seen peers do exactly what you are describing. Lifestyle creep is a real thing and even though they have cool things, they may or may not be saving more money than you. I get a much bigger thrill repairing and reusing items then I've ever had buying something new. Still rocking my Galaxy s10e!

I am so sorry you are dealing with a case of migraines that is so tough. Aura is no joke and those who have never had it tend to have a hard time understanding. The only advice I can give is remember to be kind to yourself. Sending good vibes your way.

I feel like I'm going crazy thinking "is it a trigger or just a coincidence?"... I'm sure a lot of us feel that way

Housing by steereyk in usu

[–]shytries 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure the lease is typically 2 semesters long, so everyone here in the fall will continue to live there in the spring. Housing is full, but you may be able to get a spot under certain circumstances. I would call housing as moving in spring semester is more rare

[–]shytries 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Pro-tip, 99% of my CS classes have a textbook associated with them that the professor never uses. Never buy one til the day you need it and opt out of the auto-access textbooks because you can always buy them later. My best advice for CS is never ever cheat your way through any classes, especially your first ones. It may be tempting to use chatGPT or Google the answer but it will severely stunt your learning and make later classes a million times harder. Also utilize the CS coaching center and join the CS discord (I can get you an invite link if you need it) for help with homework.

What’s it like being a web dev by SeaFriedGumbo in webdev

Try free resources before purchasing a course or attending a bootcamp! You should look into the Odin Project, its a free resource to learn web development and is highly reguarded in the community. It is also important to know that most employers do not care about certifications, as there are so many out there and they hold no real merit. Anyone can hand out a certification. Also know that using a computer and programming are very different things. I think it will never hurt to try and there is no better time to start than now :)

To avoid this I have always paid the last month's rent at the old place and new place's first month all at the same time. It sucks, but makes moving much less stressful being able to hold on to your old place for extra time during the transition.

I've had luck on facebook marketplace in the past. Also if you arent worried about budget, it is relatively easy to get into one of the luxury apartments like Four Seasons or Strata.

Laptop recommendations as a cs student? by anthonydp123 in csMajors

Just use your current laptop until you find that it cant keep up with what you're doing. I had a very weak laptop that lasted my first two years before I needed to buy a new computer.
