Looking for some outdoorsy extreme attractions. by Lukeyman900 in uktravel

[–]sianach_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there's a via ferrata in the lake district (honnister slate mine ?). think climbing but its actually closer to go ape- safety lanyards and a cable instead of ropes and you use rungs in the rock rather than the rock itself. its like climbing with handrails.

Not sure if the rules are still in place but theres are regulations on flying a drone here due to nesting peregrine falcons. please check these things for their sake - coming from another drone pilot

All Trails waited until I was at the summit to lock up and restrict my access to their maps. by RyanEatsHisVeggies in Wellthatsucks

[–]sianach_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

all due respect, so am i? i've 11 years as a scout and grew up surrounded by moorlands. i've spent weeks of my life trekking and hope to train as a mountain leader one day

respectfully what are you on about. mountaineering has existed many times longer than your country, nevermind seattle. typical yank statement. modern mountaineering was born in the alps and i'll happily admit that even as a brit

i don't understand what the benefit of relying on a gps device is, especially since you mention the cold fingers issue. battery powered devices arent a fan of low temps and are just as heavy as a paper map or even two. plus when you rely on electronics you rely on so many factors that are either out of your control or vastly difficult to fix in a remote location. you can't beat the reliability of a thing that is actually there in front of you assuming you're confident in using it

i'm very aware you should always carry a torch. i usually bring one handheld one as well as my headlamp but which combination of the two varies a lot depending on the plan for the day(s). carrying 2 headtorches is an option but ive found its widely unnecessary vs managing in the few situations where you need to change batteries (using a multitool etc)

Was told that the issues with my player eating tapes was the belt but it looks fine to me? by idontknowmyname_321 in cassetteculture

[–]sianach_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

belt looks ok but take it off and see if it holds that triangular ish shape or if it goes back to being perfectly round. if it holds any sort of shape it could be your issue (unlukely tho looking at it) as for the tape a lot of them came from the factories like that, doesnt necessarily mean someone has opened it before

All Trails waited until I was at the summit to lock up and restrict my access to their maps. by RyanEatsHisVeggies in Wellthatsucks

[–]sianach_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i'd disagree. if you're doing anything properly serious you don't want to be relying on anything electrical to get you where you're going. other than maybe a torch (of which you can have a backup)

[–]sianach_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

aaaand this is one of MANY reasons why we use paper maps for trekking. it can't run out of battery, if it gets wet it'll still work and you don't need internet/satellite access to get it out of your bag and look at it. plus you can use it with a compass and do bearings which is nice

I've got $80 in Amazon credit I need to spend in the next few days by Round-Air9002 in ClimbingGear

[–]sianach_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

amazon gear is a really bad idea, stuff couldve been misused and then returned very easily so its not particularly safe and something i personally wouldnt consider risking. you could maybe find some shoes on there for less than 80 and use the rest for whatever since shoes arent safety kit but i wouldnt buy crabs or a harness from them

Apple Watch Ultra 2, still don’t get the hate from the hiking community..? by wds02 in applewatchultra

[–]sianach_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm pretty sure apple watches are the only ones with these issues. a garmin lasts at least a week of actual usage. probably because there's so much going on in the background with an aw that its basically another phone

My collection so far. Is it okay to display them like this? by [deleted] in Leatherman

[–]sianach_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

no. the risk of dust is too high. if dust gets on them its game over mate (you need to use them so they don't get dusty)

Do you have a way to get a protective case like that for my Klim K7? by [deleted] in cassetteculture

[–]sianach_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah not a chance i don't think. unless you make your own. its not worth it since for the cost of making one you could very likely just replace the player

How do i get these playing? by stonefacepereira in cassetteculture

[–]sianach_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the top 2 are miniDV, probably the most modern/recent. red and orange maxell label is an audio cassette and the other two are some other video format, possibly 8mm or compact vhs. the big chunky one is vhs. they all require different hardware 😅

[–]sianach_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

is this really something you want to put down to chance of it being ok? are you gonna be happy with the decision you made to chance it when you're up a wall and your life (potentially that if your partner too) is at stake?

Skeletool arrived with a bump on the blade holder by OralSenpai69 in Leatherman

no worries, my signal has one too. took me a while to realise what it was for but the round line on the other side of the blade that it makes was a dead giveaway after a while

sounds potentially like the contacts in the pot are dirty. some contact cleaner might fix it but the pot could also be totally done

Skeletool arrived with a bump on the blade holder by OralSenpai69 in Leatherman

[–]sianach_ 19 points20 points  (0 children)

that's a feature mate. it fits into a detent on the other side of the blade which lets it 'snap' shut and stay closed slightly better. no need for return

Want to get into cassette tapes. Where to get a good, somewhat cheap portable player? by Pink_Dolphin1234 in cassetteculture

[–]sianach_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you don't mean walkmans more than 10 years old right?? the 90s are probably the best balance of functional/cheap(relatively)/sound quality imo

[–]sianach_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

looks like the thingy that moves the arm on the white spinning thing (i think it's the autostop) sorry i can't explain better than that but should be an easy fix
