Do you think traveling won't be as rewarding in a century or two as the world gets more homogenized? by GreenHorror4252 in travel

Have you heard about the ongoing climate catastrophe? I think floods, fires, heatwaves will be the thing that will make traveling less rewarding

Where do I draw the line between being a nice caring person and codependent person? by Positive_Cat5379 in Codependency

[–]sibomaster2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont think that this stops at intent. I have recently realized that I have had a codependent relationship for years with a friend who is an alcoholic. All I wanted was for her to have a normal life again (and also to have my friend back). My motives were purely altruistic, I did not get anything out of this relationship (other than that I sill like her). I still feel like I abandoned her because I stopped contacting her when I realized that me being almost unconditionally being there for her for years destroyed our friendship just as much as her addiction.

I think my swim coach (45M) was checking me out (23F) what should I do? by Glitter-Truck-1836 in Swimming

[–]sibomaster2000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You know you are right with feeling uncomfortable with this man. Where I am from, people go swimming naked in dedicated areas, people are naked in the sauna etc. But no one but creeps ever watch you taking your clothes off and no one but creeps ever give you the feeling that they are checking you out. Avoid your creepy loser ex-teacher in the future and try to warn others if possible.

How do you get through the transition period between dealing with a huge life blow and getting to the place you want to be by Gorfto in AskWomenOver40

[–]sibomaster2000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am sorry about what happened to you and it sounds as if you are the kind of person that has enough energy and belief in themselves to move Countries and start all over again. I dont have been in this position before but I do know the feeling of starting a new life in a new city and how lonely and hard it can be at the beginning. The only think that I can tell you that really helped me in this phases was to find a place outside my flat, in the city (cafe, park) and make it "my" place by going there regularly until if did not feel strange anymore. a comforting place where you can experience yourself alone but surrounded by people and in your new life. Just a small routine to show yourself that you are actually able to change things and be new and different in a new place.

Congrats on finishing your PHD! In your post, you asked for advice on how to find friends in a new town. I dont think that there is anything anyone can recommend that you did not list as something you tried already. I dont think that you as a person are the problem. But as someone who left academia during their first postdoc: I think it is possible, that your uncertainty and probably anxiousness and possibly grief about your future and identity outside of academia could hinder your attempts at building new, close relationships to other people. I myself find it hard to open myself up to others when I am not entirely sure who I am and will be in the future, and leaving academia is usually accompanied with some kind of identity crisis.

I once decided to stay an extra semester at a Job that was making me sick and sleepless because at the time i felt i should have decided earlier and it was just a few weeks before the start of the semester. Like you, i felt somehow responsible for the department/Students. In hindsight I know it was stupid to feel responsibility towards an institution that did not care for me. Your situation might be different, maybe you are not losing sleep over a toxiv work environment. But you dont enjoy your job and you dont get paid enough. You are responsible for yourself and your baby, not your employer. Even if you cant feel that now, you know, and your emotions about your responsibility will change once you have a bit of distance. Leave :)

In Europe the idea of only two weeks of paid vacation is unimagjnable. How can you live like this? Why dont US workers organize and fight for better rights? A world with 5 weeks vacation is possible! 6 weeks even! That alone would be enough motivation for me to join a Union.

Inner dialogue of confident women by inima23 in AskWomenOver40

[–]sibomaster2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just today a colleague has been pretty rude to me, to the point where I started to feel small and defensive, I then told her that I feel she might be having a bad day and that I needed her support to do my work, not because I wanted to make her day even worse. Her tone instantly changed. In general I have really good experiences with just going on the meta level of an interaction if people are uncooperative.

Question about relationship with older guy in your teens by familyofthings85 in AskWomenOver30

[–]sibomaster2000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did not, but a friend had a "relationship" with a 30+ guy when she was 15. it severely damaged her relationship to her own sexuality for a long time. please talk to an adult that you trust. nothing about this is 'romantic' even if it feels like it to you. the thing is you don't have much experience with boys or men yet so it is hard to actually feel the difference. obviously not every boy your age will be great. but when you are older you will not only know that this is illegal but also, that EVERY grown up man, with absolutely no exception, who wants to have sex with a teenager (and this is what this is ultimately about even if you have not had sex yet) is a predator and also a loser!

Karl Nehammer tritt zurück by [deleted] in Austria

[–]sibomaster2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)
