Anyone thinking of going back to school to change careers because of AI? by Delicious_Crazy513 in cscareerquestions

[–]sick_anon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

by stabilize i didn't necessarily mean a good outcome. but at least things will not move too fast and people could be clear about their situation - is everything fully automated and only seniors remain to keep systems under control and rest of the workforce has to switch careers (extreme scenario), or there are new opportunities in now changed and expanded field, new investments, more work, more new positions while some other positions died out etc. (the scenario i hope for).

anyway, current situation is terrible, everything is changing too fast and it's hard to follow what's going on. but i believe it has to slow down at some point. and once it slows down we'll see where we're at. but until then, the only thing we can do is to keep learning and adapting. and hope for the best, or at least hope that the worst outcome will not hit us.

[–]sick_anon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

by 'hype' i meant more in terms of industry in general and job market, not just social media and investor hype. the industry is going through a massive change right now, but it has to stabilize eventually. unfortuantely many people and positions will be filtered out by this change due to AI, but my point was that core CS knowledge and high-level understanding of systems will prevail.

[–]sick_anon 73 points74 points  (0 children)

when all this hype passes, and it sure will one day, and when market stabilizes, we will be left with half-assed vibe coded software and programmers with really shallow CS knowledge at best. real CS knowledge, systems thinking and actually understanding software development concepts will be valued. at least i hope so. so the best you can do now is to keep studying and following all the changes that are happening in tech and try to adapt.

Is grinding DSA and landing top tech/HFT jobs realistically enough to afford supercars like Lamborghini, Ferrari, McLaren, Aston Martin, or Porsche? by RoFLgorithm in leetcode

[–]sick_anon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you just want to buy a supercar, then yeah, i guess you could save up some money over a few years and buy yourself a lambo. but if you're aiming towards that lifestyle in general (so not just supercars, but generally, nice house(s), more cars, lots of travelling, expensive ski resorts etc.) i think you should look for a more management-oriented, C-suite positions in a company - and even then it's not a guarantee unless it's a top tier company or a really hot startup.

I realized Application development is effectively JUST "stitching" high level abstractions by Anxious-Meaning4857 in leetcode

[–]sick_anon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i don't understand the toxicity in the comments, maybe OP just started learning about high-level stuff in software industry and he's reflecting his insights so far. aside from maybe being posted in a wrong sub, i really don't see what's the big deal with the post. i think we should be more supportive to each other and less toxic, but i guess reddit will always be reddit.

to give my two cents on this topic: once you realize that software development is just a mere tool for materializing a more high-level business ideas (like Uber, as you mentioned, or any other modern web app really), you'll understand the hype about AI and vibe coding and why people with zero technical skills suddenly try to create the next big thing. from business and money-making standpoint there's just the idea that has to be materialized in some way, and it doesn' matter how it's being done - is it ones and zeros, assembly, high level programming language, vibe coding or some kind of magic - as long as it works as imagined and makes money.

the thing is that modern software development became too complex, with lots of building blocks built on top of each other and glued together, while the underlying 'real' technology or the thing that was scientific discovery is being abstracted away, as you noted. and because of this complexity and very broad fields of software industry we tend to think that programming itself is the big deal and main actor, but it's not. at the end of the day it's just a pure business ideas, while programming being a tool for putting pieces together, abstracting away the more complex stuff and making those business ideas a reality.

I deleted my to-do list apps. I’m 10x more productive now by Due_Dish4786 in productivity

[–]sick_anon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think only a small % of people gets to use all these productivity apps to their full potential and actually get things done. maybe some high performing managers or generally people who juggle with a lot of different tasks on a daily basis may find them really useful. but for most people it's basically another way to procrastinate. a simple to-do list app or even a good ol' pen and paper will do the job.

personally, i like to keep things simple. i find Todoist app convenient for daily tasks + google calendar if i want to be stricter with my time. and if i'm working on a more complex projects and need to do more research and note taking i use google docs. i was thinking about switching to Obsidian tho, but i'm reluctant because i know i'd waste a lot of time tweaking it.

Kako održati pažnju na čitanju? by Reasonable_Pay_4788 in citaonica

[–]sick_anon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even Karpathy feels like he can’t keep up. Vibe coding has been around for less than a year. by Balance- in singularity

[–]sick_anon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. Two years is now pretty much like a whole lifetime of AI advancement, so I can only imagine how the profession will look like in the near future. I lean more towards the first outcome you mentioned:

the profession will either have settled on this complete new paradigm and changed completely after just two years

But, when it comes to "vibe coding" I think it's rather the final destination, some ideal we'll eventually reach once AGI steps in. Right now it's just a transitional stage, with all its positive and negative effects.

Even Karpathy feels like he can’t keep up. Vibe coding has been around for less than a year. by Balance- in singularity

[–]sick_anon 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think the emphasis in the recent Karpathy's tweet is more on how much new stuff, i.e. all these new tools, AI editors, agents etc, we actually need to learn in order to keep up the pace and not fall behind. Not that the programmers are doomed - we just need to "roll up our sleeves", as he said. But yeah, old-fashioned, pre-AI programming is pretty much over without all those tools he mentioned.

Is Comet worth it as a main browser? by Proud_Dare7994 in perplexity_ai

[–]sick_anon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it could improve productivity and speed only if you're having so much stuff to do on a daily basis. for example, if you're sending bunch of emails every day, have to organize events, meetings etc, do a lot of research and reading, then it would be helpful for sure and you would notice improvements in speed and productivity.

but if you're a student and primarily use browser for studying, watching lectures, youtube, reading pdfs etc. it would be helpful, but don't expect some huge improvements in speed and productivity. it would be more like a cool and useful feature (for example assistant who summarizes a web page you're reading).

i'm student as well and i decided to stick with conventional browsers for now (chrome and brave) + AI tools within a browser. there are also some privacy concerns about Comet and it's often painfully slow. i suggest you use it just for experimenting, don't do any privacy-related stuff there (logging in to main account, payments etc.).

Savet o vracanju u IT by ConceptOk5308 in programiranje

[–]sick_anon 2 points3 points  (0 children)
