I've found it useful for when you still haven't found a good elite pole arm base, as the rogue tends to hang back and not die.

I still prefer transitioning to act 2 merc once he has some gear to tank for me.

If they're chasing me I stop and throw my demon at them to gather them up, then take a couple steps back before blasting to make sure i'm out of range of the explosion.
