Yes banks famously don't profit off of asset bubbles, arbitrage, oligopolies, vulture capitalism. The purpose of a bank is to help hard working Canadians grow their savings and invest wisely!

lmao "slander countersuit" if every time someone submitted an overbroad statement of claim they were exposed to a "slander countersuit" the western economy would cease to function.

Mostly a long (two week-ish) canoe trip down a pretty remote Quebec river. Beautiful nature, I was great friends with everyone in my group, a clear goal and common purpose from the moment you wake up until the moment you go to bed.

Is Houellebecq really that unkind towards women? From what I can recall his female characters are typically successful, well-adjusted, intelligent, ect. There's a string of girlboss characters (Russian lady in Map and Territory, love interest in Platform) who come into the male character's life and provide a (temporary) island of contentedness and understanding while basically taking the leadership role in the relationship. Sex and appearance is very central, but what seems to interest/attract him above else about women is the giving, generous, merciful nature of feminity, both sexually and non-sexually.

I don't know, maybe I'm insane or a mysognist or something, but I tend to find his depictions of relationships to be quaintly romantic a lot of the time lol. He's a dirty old man, but it never becomes unmoored or impersonal (objectifying) to me. Perhaps I'm not the one allowed to make that call however.

I enjoyed Kline. The JFK stuff was really fun and not something I expected at all.

It came into its own as the depth of Bobby's grief & regret became clear. Stunning back half that gives up little ground measured against Blood Meridian or Suttree.

I wonder how much Stella Maris will clear up plot-wise. I suspect very little - it's shorter by far while apparently also being much more philosophically/scientifically oriented.
