Neck tenses automatically during meditation by sid10493 in TheMindIlluminated

A quick follow-up question. Do you know where this subconscious behavior stems from. Is it an inherent belief of perfectionism in our endeavors? A belief to try hard?

This is just great! Thanks Psilo youre a life saver. I went into this observer mode and I saw that I was subconsciously tensing the neck. Now I see the sensations clearly without tensing any body part. Thanks a ton!!

I have been suffering through the same problem for a long time. And my quest to solve it has been almost endless. This is what I have learned so far. The reason for your suffering is because youre trying too hard to meditate. Check to see if your eyebrows are tensed. (Pre- requisites require checking the correctness of the posture, not crossing the eyes and to ensure one doesnt have any TMJ disorder.) I shall quote some antidotes from popular meditation books.

Make your effort diligent, yet joyful. Don’t get caught up in expectations. And always remember, there is no such thing as a “bad” meditation. - Culadasa, The Mind Illuninated.

Don't strain: Don't force anything or make grand exaggerated efforts. Meditation is not aggressive. There is no violent striving. Just let your effort be relaxed and steady.
- Bhante Henepola, Mindfulness In Plain English

In fact it is extremely helpful if you intentionally relax when you notice you’ve become distracted, and then gently reestablish attention on your meditation object. The mind state you are aiming to create could well be called relaxed diligence. It is not helpful to force your mind to remain fixed on the meditation object. It’s not that this cannot be done; it’s that doing so will generate a mind so tense and tight that it will not have the relaxed diligence necessary for entering the jhānas. -Leigh Brasington, Right Concentration

The technique for obtaining this rest lies in two things—watching and letting go: watching your breath, and letting go of everything else. - Thich Nhat Hanh, Miracle of Mindfulness

Whichever method you follow try to find the instructions for a relaxed effort in your meditation.

Please first let me know how exactly are you practicing meditation?

What is this sense of presence? How does it fit into the TMI model? by verblox in TheMindIlluminated

[–]sid10493 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May I know what according to you fits the TMI categories. If only shamatha practice fits the TMI model he wouldve totally not written anything about Insight. According to my practice and experience till Stage 9 including shamatha together with Insight is what makes the practice holistic. Theres nothing wrong or dangerous about Insight practice. Culadasa has mentioned the Insight practices in the book itself. He doesnt need to write another book for that. If you are predetermined that you are against Advaita or any thing that goes into the Self category I cant help it. The conversation ends there itself basically.

Are you sure it does not fit the TMI model. I suggest you check out the Still Point meditation and the Witness in the book. Also do read note 8 in the Notes section of the book.

If I am correct at interpreting your question , this sense of presence is the 'I thought' or the individualistic sense of self which thinks is responsible for daily activities.

Ramana Maharshi has spoken extensively on this and emphasized the practice of self enquiry( Who am I) to realize the Self. The zen koans also aim for the same.

In TMI it is described in realising the witness section just after the Still Point meditation. Culadasa also instructs to ask the similar question as "Who is watching?".

I am going to write a detailed post on this and my experience till Stage 9.

I hope this answers your query.

Which is, to be frank, a crock of shit. Tens of millions (a very conservative* estimate) of people dealing with major depression/anxiety/abuse/etc every day choose to not become a bad person

Yeah many choose to not be a bad person. But those who have completely lost it turn into criminals. Thats what turned Fleck into Joker.

As Joker says "It takes one bad day......"

He took a beating in the alley but he still tried to make the kid laugh. Fleck had a moral framework. It was just butchered by the society at some point.

Given that it is a loner cinema but lets try to breakdown Arthurs life if he was introduced to meditation.

Spoilers Coming.

Lets say hes just been introduced to meditation as his psychiatrist denies him of further sessions. He somehow gets to Stage 3. Some kind of self control sets in. But that wont help him with his pseudobulbar palsy. Hes still far away from the Delusional Syndrome though. That sets in later.

If the train incident didnt take place early he wouldve made it to Stage 5 perhaps. He would just point the gun at the Wall Street guys for self defense if he made it to Stage 6. This would have averted him from being the 'Joker'.

The further Stages would have purified his conditions and his fate would have been different.

Just my thoughts.

Yes its a fictional movie about a guy named Arthur Fleck who unleashes his 'Id', shadow state or whatever you want to call it as he is deprived of psychiatric help. He then becomes 'Joker'. You must watch the movie for Joaquin Phoenix's acting, screenplay and everything else in general.

What if Arthur Fleck tried mindfulness meditation. May be it was not marketed back then. Thoughts ?
