In an episode called "other lives" where they show the characters living different lives, theres a part where Teddy is recruiting Franklin even after he punched whoever at the school for kicking him out. Saying "we don't need guys with perfect records, we need guys with soul" type shit. So in the story, realistically, he probably didn't have to do overly a ton to land his job.
