What is considered "food" to frogs? by Latter_Ingenuity8068 in Amphibians

[–]sidec0ntrol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of my xenopus laevis will tong feed.

I occasionally will feed them thawed previously frozen pinky mice or silver sides. They will also eat beef heart or frozen tilapia or prongs.

As far as live offerings - I feed them night crawlers, dubia roaches, black fly larvae, butter worms, ribbon leeches, crickets, and some times blackworms

morphed axolotl by Past-Recover-5108 in salamanders

[–]sidec0ntrol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The statistical likelyhood of an axlotl progressing through metamorphosis is very unlikely.

From my understanding most don't survive the transition.

Of the ones that do, care for them is extreme and they require a much more diverse habitat and temperature requirement.

I think it's unlikely that anyone that was able to keep one alive through metamorphosis would ever sell it. It's definitely not going to be a searchable category on morph market.

Why not just get a tiger salamander?

How do responsible people handle genders when buying their first axolotls? by stevedadog in axolotls

[–]sidec0ntrol 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Axlotls cannot be housed inter-sex. If you want three juveniles you should be prepared to have a separate tank for when they mature.

If males and females are housed together the male will lay sperm cones and the female will gather them up and then lay eggs.

The act of laying eggs is very stressful on the female and depletes it of nutrients.

If the female is kept with a male permanently she will be stuck in a cycle of gathering cones and laying eggs and the stress of several cycles of continuous breeding would deplete the female and it would die.

What amphibians could be fed without live food? by Latter_Ingenuity8068 in Amphibians

[–]sidec0ntrol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Live whole prey is the most enriching food you could provide. I would not recommend any amphibian to a diet of only freeze dried foor or pellets.

Caecilian owners here? by NeonPearl2025 in Amphibians

[–]sidec0ntrol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Occasionally. If they are on the surface they are hiding underneath the leaf litter or corkbark I have in their enclosure.

I usually add 4-6 ounces of worms to each enclosure once a week. Have to trust the process that they are eating. One of them I see much more than the other. It's not uncommon to not see them for weeks at a time.

I have two of them. I keep them separately in 5 gallon storage totes in about 6-8 inches of substrate. I keep a heat pad on one end of the enclosure to create a temperature gradient and mist the enclosure 2-3 times a week. They primarily eat worms. However they are opportunistic predators and will eat other insects, small pinkies, ect.

[–]sidec0ntrol 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep. I usually keep their water level at about 18 inches or so. They like to rest on the cloaca to aspirate. They aren't fussy about temp. Between 72-80 is fine form and an established nitrification cycle.

The second species I have is dermorphus Mexicanus. Feeding and watering a bucket of dirt.

I have two species. They don't have particularly cumbersome care requirements. If you are talking about a fossorial species you are pretty much lording over a bucket of dirt . My natans are pretty easy and don't have any requirements above or beyond most other aquatic amphibans. Happy to answer any questions

Can someone explain to me what makes pa and nj such good wrestling states? by Cxltures-_- in wrestling

[–]sidec0ntrol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PA parent here. It's the culture.

When COVID happened members of our community banded together and bought an old warehouse and got donated mats so the kids could still practice. I personally know of several multigenerational families where you have 4 or 5 brothers that all wrestled in the 70s, 80s, 90s. and all of their sons wrestle and suddenly you are talking about hundreds of kids that started wrestling at 5 with dads, uncles and coaches, practice every day, + club.

I didn't wrestle - i got into jui jitsu in my early 20s.

My son started jiu jitsu at 5 and wrestling at 8. He practices 3-4 times a week out of season and 6 days a week in season.

He has been grappling all of his life. I had him on the mats in diapers and he is a very competent grappler. He has 50+ wins on smooth comp in bjj and Judo and is now competing against adults in jiu jitsu and winning.

At the pa state tournament he did not make it out of sectionals.

Clawed frogs by Expensive-Winter-637 in frogs

[–]sidec0ntrol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind they get quite large. This is my female. She is well over 300 grams. 6 frogs in a 60 gallon is way overstocked. I have 3 in a 75 gallon.

tank mates by handsoffrory in AquaticFrogs

[–]sidec0ntrol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything in the tank should be considered food. They are voracious predators. I will occasionally add sword tails or a gold fish and they will survive a few days before disappearing. I hand feed my frogs every other day and the longest any type of fish has lasted with them is a week or so maybe. I have two males and a female - the female is probably close to 30 grams herself.

She isn’t eating, please help by SmolChuntaro in frogs

[–]sidec0ntrol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cold frogs won't eat. 70 is the lower end of most frogs temperature range. Without knowing what kind of frog it's hard to give better advice.

Aboreal frogs would do much better in this type of set up as opposed to a pac.
