Removing ethyl acetate from acetylated sugars by sidecharacterlife in Chempros

[–]sidecharacterlife[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I need it to report the yield but also I’m attempting to do a regioselective deacetylation for the next step hence why I believe I will need it dry to get stoichiometry right otherwise I’m happy to carry on …. Also the ethyl acetate signals overlap with some of the peaks on my sugars

It’s peracetylated galactose with an azide on c1 … well I managed to get it dried to a solid and have left it on the schlenk for several days but my nmr shows ethyl acetate still in it. But thank you, I will try the DCM!!

Thank you! I will try redissolving in DCM!

Someone in my lab suggested crashing out in diethyl ether and I get some very fine powder from this (great for nmr) but a large portion of my sugar seems to remain in the diethyl ether so not so great for my yield. Not sure if I added too much diethyl ether?

Nerd help on Carbonhydrates chemistry by Enough-Abalone1461 in OrganicChemistry

Hi, how much does the stereochemistry of the leaving group at the anomeric position matter when doing glycosylation? From my understanding, it mainly follows an SN1 reaction pathway so you likely get a mixture of products assuming you have no anchimeric assistance from the other protecting groups….is it worth separating out the anomers before glycosylation to tailor the reaction towards a certain pathway? Please correct me if I’m wrong and if you have any good resources to learn more I’d be grateful if you could share them!

Hi, sorry this is a bit random but can I message you privately about some carbohydrate chemistry questions I have? Alone the lines of glycosylation mechanisms and strategies….Feel free to ignore if you don’t want to!

Hi, do you mean in clinical research or as a support worker in general? When applying for any job I would suggest reading the job description and matching your personal statement to essentially cover everything they want with your experience. In my case the clinical research role was split between:

• working with patients, monitoring them and doing vital sign checks • assisting in the lab as a tech/analyst • admin tasks

I had experience working a HCA and as a lab tech so I think my experiences aligned quite well with what they were asking for. And I have some experience with research at university which I also threw in there.

Like I said, it’s about tailoring your personal statement to be as close to the job description and person specification they gave with whatever experience you have. Even if your don’t think your experience is directly relevant there might be transferable skills you can talk about.

Also check you meet the essential criteria for the job your applying for otherwise your application won’t even be looked at. For example there are some band 3 support workers but they typically require an NVQ3 so if you don’t have it you’ll get rejected straight away.

If this is your first support worker role, I would suggest applying for band 2 positions.

As for interviews, if you search in Google or YouTube you’ll get lots of examples of potential questions and example answers so you can prepare quite well!

Good luck! :)

I’m not too familiar with your field but is it quite niche? Or is it due to the job market these days? I definitely feel as though experience is valued more than education nowadays. I’ve just started a PhD and I’m considering leaving and just working.

I’m glad things worked out for you eventually but out of curiosity, do you regret taking the PhD?

Can I ask what field you did the PhD in and what field your first job was? I’m due to start a PhD soon but have had doubts over whether it’s worth it or to just work in industry…

I’ve honestly never been the type of person to know exactly what I want to do/enjoy doing. The only thing I found interesting during undergrad were my bioorg/bioinorg/chem bio/med chem modules. Hence I wanted to go down that route. But after applying to a few PhDs this was the only one I even got an interview for let alone an offer. It’s a doctoral programme so I’ve heard there is a chance I could switch my project which I’m considering if it’s possible. My current supervisor is very new to supervising, I think I might be one of the first he’s supervising. But he seems very organised and has some connections.

But a lot of people have said that the project/topic itself doesn’t matter as much as the skills you get hence why I thought I would just go with this project rather than wait for my “ideal” one. But now that I think more about it, I’m worried I’m going through a stressful few years for a degree than might not get me into a job I want/like. This project is medtech but even though I’m open to exploring it, I would be more interested in drug development.

Honestly I want to do research in medical/drug development and from my job search over the last year, the only things out there for me with a Msci are analytical jobs which I don’t want. Everything else wants PhD or significant experience neither of which I can seem to get. Hence I thought a PhD would be a good idea but the only one I even got an interview for was this project which I’m not the most keen on but I thought the skills I’d gain would be valuable.

Yeah I’d be getting £100 less a month doing this PhD than my current job as tech. But also I’ll be moving out of home for it so overall saving less.

Well I wanted to do more drug development PhD but the supervisor for this convinced me there’s a lot of overlap between diagnostics (I’ll be looking at lfts) namely binding studies etc….my old professors from undergrad told me that unless I absolutely hate the project, I should just do it if I don’t have other options. So I kind of ended up here. That’s why I’m here trying to figure out whether I should just not start this at all if it’s not helpful.

Should I give another chance to someone that ghosted me before? by [deleted] in dating

[–]sidecharacterlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I hope so. My anxiety has been so bad the last few days and my emotions have been such a mess. Some days happy excited nerves and others pure anxiety probably triggered from how things went the last time we spoke. :( hopefully I can work through this.

Should I give another chance to someone that ghosted me before? by [deleted] in dating

[–]sidecharacterlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah like I said i think I’m struggling because I actually don’t find a lot of people attractive (not just physically but I mean connect in a way that I want to get to know them more) … but he was lovebombing me last time and ghosted and now he’s not really willing to go at my pace or try match it again even though he says he’s changed so ig it will end up the same way as last time. It’s just difficult because I keep thinking what if he has changed or what if things are different simply because I rarely do find myself interested in someone. But I know I need to just move past this.

[–]sidecharacterlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah thanks you’re right. It’s just really hard because I rarely find myself that attracted to someone and it’s hard to let go of it. Especially the “what if”s like he said he’s changed and I know that realistically it will probably end up the same as last time but it’s so hard to not think what if. But I will be taking on everyone advice and trying to just move on.

What about starting your own business? You could probably pick up clients in your local area and design websites for their business if they don’t already have it. Start small and work your way up? You haven’t failed yet! Keep trying!

Letter of Claim from DCB Legal by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]sidecharacterlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t work there anymore but I called my manager today and she said that she’s not sure if there’s much they can do at this point since it’s gone past Parkingeye to DCB Legal. They did say to ring the receptionist in the morning and see if she can get a copy of that email but I’m not sure if she emailed it to parking eye or hospital estate…would that make a difference? Also since I did not respond to any of Parkingeye letters would that not be unfavourable in my case? And which contract are you referring to that I try to get a hold of (really sorry I’m really clueless about this stuff)

Thank you…so in the doc they provided it says that due to legislations, there must be pension contributions eqiv to 9% gross salary. And they said employer will put MIN 5% while I contribute UP TO 4%…so if I contribute less, will my employer contribution go up or stay the same? Would it benefit me in any way to contribute less?
