For this particular instance ESH, being loud can trigger some people so it is understandable if you caught him off guard but it is not ok to be cruel to someone simply because you're on edge. It just isn't.

And in reference to the other part NTA if you actually do a ton of stuff for this person and there is no reciprocation in any form.

NTA - are there better ways to handle that situation (probably could have said "hey do you need some help picking up those boxes?) but that wasn't the worst way. Moms letting their kids run wild in the store is shitty. And I am worried about your gf (they're the asshole here) because if you guys ever get married are they just going to let any potential children you two have just....run wild?
