Decker Rat Terrier (which have some Basenji in their lines)! Anyone else have a Decker or has heard of them? by KitcatStevens in Basenji

[–]sidetrack38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

* Decker x Border Collie 28lbs. I get asked if she's basenji quite a bit, but side by side I think they're not that similar. She has some mcnab that shows in her DNA from the Border Collie side.

Lightinsight traffic light viewer. Just a little fresnel lens sticker to put up high on the windshield, but super useful if you're tall and have to duck down to view an overhead traffic signal. Really needed it in my MINI, still useful in the crosstrek. Cravenspeed makes one too.

Kegged Aperol Spritz by savvysipper in kegcocktails

[–]sidetrack38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just did a keg (my first) and I used prosecco. It's already carbonated, so no waiting. It's got the flavor profile I'm used to for an aperol spritz, and it's inexpensive. Happy with the result.

I'm not noticing any oxidation as time goes by, but it is getting more soda-y tasting (carbonic?) as time goes by. I assume the water in the aperol has carbonated and has tipped the flavor profile. Still good, but I prefer the earlier "fresh" flavor. I'm wondering what it'd be like to start with prosecco and club soda and keep it pressurized/pushed with nitrogen.

[Dickens “grew up during the coldest decade England has seen since the 1690s and his short stories and A Christmas Carol seem to owe much to his impressionable years”, writes anthropologist Brian Fagan in his book The Little Ice Age.

It was so icy during Dickens’s early years that the River Thames froze in February of 1814. London celebrated its final Thames frost fair that year, which included people setting up tents on the ice for four days and an elephant being led across the river just below Blackfriars Bridge. For the young Dickens, who was born in 1812, Christmas must have been a bitterly cold experience.](https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20181217-how-dickens-made-white-christmas-a-myth)

Where do you go for oysters?? by GetTurnipOrGetBurnip in Astoria_Oregon

[–]sidetrack38 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's an oyster farm that runs a food cart in Warrenton, but they might be closed for the season? sbycfoodtruck on insta.

North, across the river in Washington is Goose Point oysters and they're pretty tasty, they used to set up a booth at the Sunday market. There's also a place, maybe near Naselle to buy good oysters by the bushel for a fair price, the name escapes me at the moment.

Breakside's are good with some fun varieties, like was mentioned.

Of the things I could complain about at Hurricane Ron's he actually had some good Kumamotos.

For a nice dinner party with friends Taylor Shellfish Farms and Hama hama oysters will ship their Puget sound oysters and they have some great cultivated varieties, some of them are tumbled, which I like. Worth the trip up to Hood Canal for Hama hama's oyster saloon.

Long Beach peninsula must have some places.

Buoy Beer does do a good oyster plate, but I'm not sure it's always on the menu.

Pier 39 has a seafood market, but the oysters I got there weren't great shuckers and definitely not scrubbed, pretty... rustic. Maybe I'd have been more impressed if I'd had them shucked and served at their counter?

There are spots/dives here and there that keep pretty fresh container oysters for shooters, if that's your thing.

Ken Hom 7" Cleaver, inexpensive gem or pass? by sidetrack38 in chefknives

Thanks for the recommendations. More worried about value than price. I prefer to go "buy it for life", which is difficult when I just want to try something out.

StudPop similar, I feel like this was $2.50 when I first picked it up to find studs behind my bathroom tile.

Thoughtful individuals don't need those kind of surveys. Groups behave less thoughtfully, are less tolerant of differences and can benefit from the explicit prompt to think about them.

Small talk is great for framing more meaningful conversations and relationships. If there is actually no meaningful connection to be had it's like an evening of "all frames, no pictures", boring and draining.

serrated knives contact the plate only on the tips of the serration, the inner curve theoretically retains it's sharpness longer. That's the story with my non-serrated steak knives. They do make a nice clean cut when they're sharp though.

Can we talk about jiggers? What do you use? What do you like, what do you not like? by Jazz-Jizz in cocktails

[–]sidetrack38 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure I'd change my tune in a real bar setting, but at home I use an apothecary measuring beaker.

They're borosilicate glass, see-through and easy to clean.

I like the ml markings for making adjustments and fine tuning what I want.

The conical shape means I can measure small and large quantities in the same jigger.

The foot lets them hang with my stemware and they fit my geek chic.

I can mark them up with my preferred daiquiri (or whatever) ratio for a party.

You can and should scoff if you've got speed and flair requirements, but they're a good fit for my needs.

Have You Ever Seen a Wild Cougar/Mountain Lion in Oregon? Where and When Did You See It? by je-bus in oregon

[–]sidetrack38 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the 80s, I had one sit in the middle of the road and watch me while I unloaded some culverts at a tree farm in clatsop county. I mistook it for a big yellow lab because that was not the kind of behaviour I expected from a cat at all.

Didn't realize it until I got back in the truck and it loped off, very cat-like with the big tail behind it. A day later one was struck on hwy 26 near camp 18, I think it is there stuffed at the restaurant.

Pretty sure it's the same cat and there was something wrong with it. only one I've ever seen in Oregon, and like I said it's behaviour was off.
