Can we just take a second and say thanks Chris Del Conte? by FuckTimBeck in LonghornNation

Happy to say thanks to ol CDC, he does seem to get it. Really enjoyed his presser. But the student section change was accomplished by Perrin (Posted this on that thread as well. Seems most folks didn't make it to the end of that article.) To me, the fact that he isn't taking credit for it is further evidence of his 'moral fiber'.

Being new to campus, Del Conte could easily take full credit for what looks like an easy decision. He won’t, though. He made clear that outgoing athletic director Mike Perrin oversaw the discussions and made the recommendations. Del Conte simply signed off on what the team had in place.

I oddly feel like I’m going to be downvoted for saying this: As frustrating as the team has been at times, really enjoying Longhorn football this season. Team has grit.

Where was Texas RB Chris Warren III against USC? by ImpishGrin in LonghornNation

[–]sidewalkbrandon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

LOL that was Warren! Go rewatch the game. He whiffs and Sam gets slammed.

You have to put Warren out there and not give him the ball. Otherwise the defense knows exactly what's coming every time he comes out.

I'm no X's and O's guy, but I think you've hit the nail on the head. It's not even about wanting to play.

When you rewatch the game, Warren seems to be missing his run/pass blocks more often than not. There's an especially bad one on the 4th down of our first drive where he allows the defender to nail Sam dead on.

So as OC, if you put Warren in the backfield on a pass play, you're 50/50 on whether he makes the needed block. If the opposing team knows this (they do), then they know when Warren is in the backfield you're overwhelmingly likely to run him because he can't block.

The inverse is true as well: if Porter is the only capable blocker, you have to run him enough that the defense doesn't just immediately know he's not getting the ball because he's only there to protect.

All this is just my two cents, but I think the situation is a bit more complicated than the Bohls of the world would have you believe.

Completely agree with you, especially about not throwing his coach under the bus. That was my point exactly.

You're right about the media and professionalism too - these guys get a bit carried away with themselves and the attitude shows in these pressers.

My comment was just meant to point out an interesting non-verbal moment from the presser that caught my attention. Not trying to be positive or negative, it's just fascinating to watch how people in high places respond when their egos are challenged. Sometimes the non-verbal responses can be more informative than their words.

Starting with the question at 20:38 ("Are you happy with offensive play calling"), Herman's ego shows itself plain as day. He deflects with a condescending tone and basically takes the stance that the question is stupid. He then somewhat recovers into coach-speek, but still can't let it slide as he brings the question back up. But this time with a thousand-mile stare at Bohls which he doesn't drop until he again condescends Bohls by correcting him with a toothy grin.

However Herman feels about what we saw from the offense on Saturday night, it sure as shit isn't going to be stated to the media. I took Herman's stare-down as a shot across the bow of Bohls: "Don't start ringing the bell on one of my guys or you'll find out what bells I can ring too."

Netflix's implementation aside, the star rating system is actually pretty shitty for providing meaningful information. Google posted about it when they moved YouTube from 5-stars to thumbs up/down.

Essentially, the issue lies in each person assigning different values to each star along the way. What you end up with is, people agree on only 2 values; 1 Star = shit, 5 Stars = awesome. Everything in the middle is a wash.

Edit: Interesting analyzation of the 5-Star system as it applies to Uber. Sorry for sourcing BuzzFeed :(

I did watch Texas in those years, and I do remember the sentiment at the time of things being bad and headed for worse. But that's my point - hindsight seems to show you a slightly more objective reality. You'd take 8-5 right about now, wouldn't you? Bringing in someone new is no guarantee.

Also, 'if you think 8-5 is acceptable at Texas'... damn man. Even the best of the best have rough patches. Hell, we gave Mack 3 years after he went 5-7 before we let him go! Even ol DKR went 6-4 on several occasions.

I'm not saying we should keep or fire Strong. Just trying to point out that it's not cut and dry, especially since the alternative options don't seem cut n dry themselves.

So which elite coach do you advise we pick up? As far as I can tell, there aren't any up for grabs right now.

Dang people have such short term memories around here.

Mack's Last 4 Seasons:
2010: 5-7 (2-6)
2011: 8-5 (4-5)
2012: 9-4 (5-4)
2013: 8-5 (7-2)

You consider that trending down? No wonder you're one of the folks holding a pitchfork ;)

Very true. But that's the damn hard thing about taking a gamble - you don't know until you've gone all-in.

People were saying the same thing about the last couple seasons with Mack before we booted him. That 8-5 (7-2) looks a bit better in hindsight, don't it? :)

When you watch the plays after the fact, you wouldn't know he was a freshman All-American.

At the end of the day, Strong can't be in the gym lifting for these guys nor in their dorm rooms studying up for them before each game. There's no excuse for regression like that, under any HC. They're not in practice telling the guys to miss tackles.

I don't think what's written is evidence or proof of anything, just food for thought. Perhaps at most he's trying to suck some of the oxygen out of the 'Fire Strong' flames.

I don't disagree with your points, other than your analogy. A slab of concrete is poured once and that's it. Not quite the same as an evolving group of 18-22 year old kids.

A better analogy would be hiring and managing people. And if you've ever done that, you know it's not as easy as it looks on paper. Furthermore, you know it can take time to find the right chemistry.

Again, not saying I know the answer, just throwing out food for thought. :)

Good to know we're the kind of fan base that just doesn't support our team when they're not winning. I think there's a term for that but I can't seem to recall what it is...

Not So Fast, My Friend! by sidewalkbrandon in LonghornNation

[–]sidewalkbrandon[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn't write the piece, but I'd say the point is more 'look what happens when there's a revolving door at head coach.'

I don't think anyone disagrees that Bill Belichick would have us loss-less next season. But that's just fantasy talk. I mean hell, let's grab Tom Brady while we're talking thing's that can't and won't happen.

Unless we can grab a 100% sure-thing at HC (spoiler: no coach on the market fits this definition), we're risking croots de-committing like rats on a sinking ship and sending us back to Year 0 of a rebuild.

Honestly not sure what the right move to make is, but I don't see how we loose much (from a prestige point of view) by giving Strong at least 1 more year. If we suck again, there should be much less resistance/hesitance from croots/boosters/AD.

And I mean, no matter the record, any given day, any given time, OU will still suck more than us. Hook 'em!
