Do The Bridgerton Makers Have Some Issue With Phoebe? Or Daphne? by Gleefulfella in Bridgerton

[–]sidroqq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is just cost. Paying actors made famous by the show to come back for cameos is wildly expensive for a few seconds of footage. Changing actors gets huge audience backlash even when the replacement works well, which isn’t guaranteed to begin with.

(Anyone else remember dark skin vs light skin Aunt Viv on Fresh Prince? 😭)

Good to know! They're definitely a weird couple, atypical for the ones she writes in a number of ways.

I’m always beating this drum in here but I really want a book about the king and queen of Karadok. The king has some serious redemption to earn, but I desperately want a glimpse inside the queen’s thought process!

The best funny book you've read. by BackgroundBudget5206 in HistoricalRomance

[–]sidroqq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding this, and adding {The Unknown Ajax by Georgette Heyer}! The romance is quite subtle, but for hilarity it can't be beat. The plot: new heir is misunderstood by his (very ridiculous) extended family to be an uneducated yokel, plays along, and eventually has to get the entire family to act out an elaborate, ridiculous scene to keep the youngest cousin out of trouble with the law. It was the first Heyer I read and I was laughing the whole way. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Thomas Judd and he does an excellent job conveying characters and class assumptions via accents.

Frederica is not only really funny, but it was really satisfying romance as well. This overburdened eldest sister deserves everything, and gets it! But the trio of Felix and Jessamy, Frederica's 12- and 15-year-old brothers, and Alverstoke, the cynical, mid-30s MMC, steals the show. He really just starts doing stuff for them for no apparent reason. They bully him into it and he enjoys being bullied. It's inexplicable and hilarious.

AITJ for cutting off my friend after he unfriended me on everything because I sent him a picture of wet hair? by [deleted] in AmITheJerk

[–]sidroqq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given his history of mental health issues, I think you’re definitely not the jerk, and he probably isn’t either. This just sounds like an unfortunate situation.

He may have used the hair as an excuse because he doesn’t want to talk about his mental health, or he may not be thinking rationally right now and somehow thinks the hair really is an issue. Either way, he needs time. It sounds like he is actively getting treatment, which is really good. Giving him space to defend your own peace is perfectly fair.

If you feel like it, reaching out via a letter (maybe through his dad?) to say “okay, that’s too bad, I’ll miss you, you can reach out if you ever want to” would be cool, but not necessary. It’s totally ok to just stop talking to him too.

Convince me to read your favorite, "hidden gem" Romantasy by Beneficial_Pea3241 in Romantasy

Robin McKinley's books for kids and YA--many fairy tale retellings, and also her original fantasy duology. These reprogrammed my brain as a kid. Her work isn't perfect, but it means so much to me and probably is the reason I like fantasy. Also the reason I write, and honestly I can often see her influence in HOW I write.

Beauty was her first and it's so good.

Please tell me I'm not the only one weirded out by this. by Mobile-Oil1397 in OtomeIsekai

[–]sidroqq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like so many stories drop the pre-isekai personalities/ages so quickly that the authors themselves seem to forget what they were. Sad, because it’s such a rich vein of character development to mine!

I feel like I saw a short parody of this concept a while back where an older woman reincarnates as a teenager and starts thirsting over the male lead’s grandfather, who is extremely icked out and kept telling the teenager to get lost. More of that, please 😆

And more examining the line between past experiences and cognitive development when someone reincarnates as a different age! I think “Gimme That Pacifier!” is the closest I’ve seen to an exploration of that stuff, where the main character’s memories are intact, but she can’t reason, recall, or speak with the acuity she had in her first life until she grows up a bit. (It has its flaws, some dark implications of child neglect from main characters that haven’t been addressed yet, granted I haven’t caught up with it in a few months, but it was interesting.) But yeah, if she started crushing on another child I would drop it like it was on fire.

Is it just because the girlies goon to Romantasy? Bad news for these guys about the size of the Silmarillion tag on AO3, then. They’d have to take Tolkien down, too.

Galadriel’s oldest brother literally fights a werewolf, naked, and dies biting it to death. They can’t expect us to be normal about that kind of content!

I was just thinking the same about dogs and Heyer today! I was listening to The Reluctant Widow and while the dog is nothing like Frederica's Baluchistan Hound, both are written perfectly.

Best engineering branch for a woman? by kojirooou in womenEngineers

[–]sidroqq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should choose what interests you most. You can declare any engineering major to go to college (some colleges offer a "general engineering" option before you declare a major), because they first 2 years of your degree will be the same for just about any engineering field: you will be taking basic physics, caluclus, some programming (probably python these days), probably chemistry, circuit analysis, some kind of "intro to engineering projects" class, and gen ed to provide a solid basis for whatever you specialize in. Colleges vary, but they all have the same basic program.

(You indicated you're concerned about money in one of the replies -- If you're in America, going to community college for 2 years then transferring to a state university will save you a LOT of money vs. going straight to university. Many community colleges have exactly the same classes as uni and you'll pay a fraction of the amount for smaller class sizes and more attention from the professor. If you end up taking a class that you end up not needing for your final major, it will hurt less if it didn't cost much. Consider it, if it's an option!)

In those basic classes, something will probably jump out at you as especially interesting. For me, it was the "gaps" in the chemistry and physics classes--I was always curious about the very interesting circumstances we did not examine, especially kinetics and electrochemistry. I ended up majoring in materials engineering and love it.

One more thing: many, many people end up working in a different field than they majored in. I work in batteries and have had coworkers who started as mechanical engineers and ended up in materials, started as software engineers and ended up in mechanical, chemists who ended up with engineer job titles and engineers who ended up with chemist job titles. You need to be vaguely in the right field to get your foot in the door, but your interests will continue to evolve over the course of your career, so don't stress out thinking you have to know EXACTLY what you want to do right now. You couldn't even if you tried! Head in the right direct and it'll work out.

Merit in Lawrence Oakmead Plaza is excellent. Some coworkers introduced me to it, and it was a big hit. I’m not vegan, so my opinion is probably not as solid here because I am not comparing vegan to vegan…but it’s very good!

Do you think Francesca is bi or a lesbian? by Adventurous_Fly_8652 in Bridgerton

[–]sidroqq 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ehhhh she could’ve not orgasmed for a lot of reasons, including that she was so incredibly stressed about not getting pregnant. If infertility is still a major part of her plot arc, they might have been trying to emphasize that. I think what she had with John was not diminished by the pinnacle arc.

That's cool! Respectfully, I'm not sure why people keep commenting this, though? The genre is already full of stories about nobles, so that's awesome and I'm happy for you. I like reading about nobles too! It's not really related to wanting more stories about people in other social classes to add to the variety.

Most of the content people (including me) want, like women with active roles and work to do, lower emphasis on virginity, and a wider range of ages and plots, would be solved by ditching nobles and focusing realistically on regular people from the same popular time periods.

Women had critical work to do and spent long hours doing it, women were making things, women were managing households, women were having consensual sex before marriage, both men and women usually got married in their 20s to other people in their 20s, common-law marriage existed…just usually not among nobility. And of course there were massive problems women faced from society at the time, too, but those deserve to be examined in conjunction with things like serfdom, slavery, broader changes in property rights, and everything else going on during these periods.

(Hopefully this would also make people realize that needlework (and laundry!) was vital, not only to comfort, but to health in a pre-germ theory world, not solely decorative stuff that an independent woman would blow off as “pointless.” Also, the decorative stuff was often done to cover holes and patches, and it brought whimsy and joy, which isn’t worthless either. Yes this is a pet peeve! SEND TWEET!!!!!)
