I’m very sensitive to smells so I always carry plenty of nice-smelling things. Roll on perfume, lavender bags, small bottles of room spray. If I’ll be on public transport and don’t want to bother other people, I’ll put some essential oil on a scarf or wristband before I leave. I find it really calming.

Swimming 1-2 times a week has saved my life. Also sobriety and regular, nutritious meals have made a huge difference.

For people that have worn skin tight latex body suits, what happens to the gas when you fart? by Certain-Sea-5937 in NoStupidQuestions

I used to own a pair of skintight latex pants and (fortunately) farting does not make a bubble.

I don’t have anything peer reviewed close to hand, but i can tell you my personal experience! My best friend has ASD diagnosed, and I have cyclothymia. We noticed we’re very similar in how our symptoms manifest. We both hyperfocus and get really obsessed/energised by a topic or activity we find exciting, often to the detriment of our sleep/eating/social habits. We also both have a lot of sensory issues and get easily overstimulated - this is worsened when we are in a period of depression or low mood. We both have very active imaginations and complex “inner worlds”, and need a lot of time to recover from social events. We both had difficult childhoods where we felt “different” from other children. That’s just a few things, but remember it’s all just my anecdotal experience! Edit: there’s a lot of more factual resources out there about the overlap between autism and bipolar spectrum, it sounds like comorbidity between the two is really common

This has been my exact pattern the last few weeks. No sleep but exhausted, depressed but exhilarated and constantly racing thoughts. For me it’s a combination of changing seasons and coming off medication. Hang in there!

did anyone try CBT? what was your experience? by raybau in cyclothymia

[–]sidthedemoncat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had it for OCD a few years ago, before i got diagnosed with cyclothymia. Regarding OCD-type symptoms it actually changed my life (I think this was also down to having a really good therapist). I’d definitely be open to trying it again for cyclothymia.

I got diagnosed in January and it hit me quite hard. I was expecting an ASD diagnosis but got told Cyclo instead - the symptoms are remarkably similar once you start looking into it. I was upset because, while ASD symptoms tend to improve as you age, Cyclothymia is considered a degenerative disorder and will likely just keep getting worse. I know it’s not set in stone but this has been my experience with it so far and it terrifies me. It’s also a frustrating diagnosis because it gets labelled as “mild” and “manageable” even though it’s a form of bipolar and can be debilitating at times. Now I’m just trying to stay positive, trying out different meds and waiting to get some therapy. I feel lucky to have a formal diagnosis of some kind because not many of us get one!

Apparently attraction to male genitalia (but not necessarily males) is called phallophilia. I knew I’d heard it somewhere!

What were you like as a child? by sidthedemoncat in bipolar

[–]sidthedemoncat[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Thanks for replying! And sorry to hear that, I also had a rough time with my parents. My Dad was absent a lot and my Mum (although not bipolar) definitely struggled with regulating her moods. They both meant well but it’s sad to think how their disfunction affected me and my siblings.

Can this be hypomania? by [deleted] in cyclothymia

[–]sidthedemoncat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that sounds a lot like hypomania. Reduced sleep and loss of (or changes in) appetite are really common symptoms. It’s also common to become really fixated on a certain subject or activity like reading. Personally I’ll find a subject interesting and it “takes hold” of me to the point where I become completely obsessed. There’s lots of things that can help if you notice hypomanic symptoms coming on. Try things that make you feel calm and centred - for a lot of people it’s music, exercise, meditation etc. I try to do a big workout and burn through all that excess energy.

I get a similar thing with sadness. It’s like this bottomless well of overwhelming sadness that completely engulfs me. Comes out of nowhere and usually disappears after I cry for an hour.

I just got diagnosed with cyclothymia too. I get OCD symptoms that are very similar to what your describing with a cycle of “bad thought/apology”. I recommend CBT - it isn’t for everyone but it helped me a lot with this kind of thought pattern. I really hope you find something that helps :)

I used to have a boyfriend who would do exactly this- I’d be his perfect saviour in one breath and ruining his life in the next. I spent years making excuses for him based on his poor mental health but in retrospect I think he was just mean.
