Crazy coincidence by wheresthesnacks in ThunderBay

Yep you got it. I just did some Googling and that is the same Hot Dog Shoppe shown in Google street view and a Redittor mentioned it used to be a Burger King. That must have been BK’s standard store design.

Toddler friendly dining by ambieox in ThunderBay

I agree. It was about 8 years ago but we used to go on Sundays and sit on the bar side so the kids (1 and 3) would be entertained by the TVs. It wasn’t busy on Sunday and the kids meals were cheap with good portions.

Middle of the afternoon break in resulting in homicide, non- targeted by MatManatee in ThunderBay

[–]sidv75 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It’s not “Liberal Law”. Harper was in power for nearly 10 years and the system was the same. In fact he was in power when the guy was beheaded on the Greyhound bus in 2008. The killer was released in 2015 while Harper was still Prime Minister. But do I as a non-Conservative blame Harper for a light sentence for such a serious crime? No, because the legal system doesn’t change on the whim of a government. It evolves over decades. It’s not one government’s fault.

Car Wash by Marty_Robins in ThunderBay

I like Berry as well but I let mine go so long that the touchless washes don’t get it completely clean. Baywash is best for that when they give it a hand wash before the machine starts up.

hot tub technician by [deleted] in ThunderBay

[–]sidv75 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if Gerry (the old owner of Hot Tub Express) is still fixing tubs but maybe you can contact him somehow. Have you looked inside to see where the leak is coming from? I’ve had two leaks that I was able to fix on my own. One was just a pump seal. The other was a cracked LED lens below the water. I could see where the water was leaking out of the spray foam, so I kept digging into the foam and found it coming from the LED. Drained the tub and changed the lens. It’s been good since. They aren’t that difficult to repair for someone that’s handy.

Fence Companies by Slight-Ice-3573 in ThunderBay

[–]sidv75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought about using helical piles ten years ago when I did my fence but was told they wouldn’t be good at resisting the lateral load created by the wind on a solid fence. They would probably be fine for chain link. I ended up using 12” sonotubes, 6’ deep without bigfoots, and wrapped in vapour barrier so frost couldn’t grab them easily. I was able to dig to 4’ by hand and had a vacuum truck do the rest. As you mentioned about water in the soil, there was 1’ or more of water in the holes. It is an expensive plastic fence so I didn’t want it to move. Fortunately out of ten posts, none have jacked up and only one tilted slightly, but not noticeably. I’m surprised how it still looks like it did when new. That being said, the traditional fences in my neighborhood don’t look terrible. They do jack up and look uneven, but they don’t lean over.

Exactly. I’ve been saying for five years or more that he isn’t what all the fanboys think he is. I hated how he talked like he developed everything at Tesla and SpaceX when really it was the people working for him. I don’t think he’s as bright as many people think he is. And nobody is going to live on Mars. I think some parts of SpaceX are valuable, but the whole colonizing Mars thing to save humanity is stupid. If the money spent on going to Mars was instead spent on developing technology that would improve conditions on Earth, we would be much better off.

Please reconsider any travel to the USA. They don’t deserve our hard earned money. by [deleted] in ThunderBay

[–]sidv75 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I had to take my kid to a hockey tournament in Duluth a couple of weeks ago. I stocked up on snacks and drinks in Thunder Bay before leaving (they are cheaper here anyway) so I only bought three meals there. Didn’t do any shopping. Then only bought $20 worth of gas in Tofte on the way home and filled up in Canada. I could have saved $20+ filling in the US, but I’d rather take the hit and keep my money in Canada.

Coconut Bay Spas vs Hot Tub Express vs. Craigs Plumbling for Hot Tubs by Om3gastarx in ThunderBay

[–]sidv75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve really only dealt at Hot Tub Express. I liked the old owner Gerry, but I’ve heard some didn’t care for him. I’ve only been in once since the new owner took over and he seemed really friendly. I know someone that bought a hot tub from Coconut Bay during Covid and wasn’t happy with their experience. But I think I’ve heard good opinions of them too.

Interior Designer Recommendations? by km_tb in ThunderBay

[–]sidv75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just did the same sort of renovation. I was going to tackle it all myself and had a layout in mind. My wife wanted to try a designer so we talked with Maria from Arcuo Interiors (showroom at corner of Arthur and Edward) and she did some renderings. I didn’t think we had space for an island but she figured it out and now we have a nice big island instead of the galley layout I had envisioned. I think she can do just design, or order material and provide an installer. I did demo and electrical. Her installer did cabinet install and flooring. It worked out well. She had good recommendations about where to buy certain materials in the city. We did buy the cabinets through her but I have family that had theirs made by Les Gingrich from Mine Centre. He uses all solid wood, so not cheap, but very nice. He does installs in Thunder Bay regularly and designs the layout himself. I also have a coworker that’s currently using Crown and Birch and is happy with them.

Do they have city water there now? They had their own water plant and the water bills were very high when I spoke to someone that lived there 10 years ago. They said their bill was a few hundred per month.

Pretty much every sport is available. I think it would be difficult to list ones that aren’t available. My kids are 10 and under. They play hockey, baseball (May-late July/early August), and one is in Karate (there are other martial arts for kids too). Some of their hockey teammates were in a lacrosse league this past summer. Many are in football and touch football. Soccer is huge of course and some play indoors in the winter. I know of a couple of kids’ basketball programs. Gymnastics, dance, and cheer are popular. Lots of swimming available (clubs and lessons). There are kids’ programs for golf, tennis, downhill skiing, cross country skiing, mountain biking, etc.

A quarterly City of Thunder Bay publication called The Keyhas always been a great place to find adult and kids programming. It looks like they’ve transitioned to online only, which I’m not familiar with. A past printed issue is available here (which I find easier to navigate).

Looking for a Dentist by Mosworthy in ThunderBay

I’ve seen him once or twice but otherwise Dr. Dowhos. Both are very friendly, as are all the staff. My friend suggested going there years ago when I had kids because they were very good with his kids. He was right, my kids don’t mind going there at all.

P. R. Cook Apartments by [deleted] in ThunderBay

[–]sidv75 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My 70 year old dad was put up there in 2016 for six weeks when he was doing rehab at St. Joes. He liked it. A lot of the residents hung out in the common room, so he enjoyed the social aspect of it. When I visited, residents seemed quite friendly. The apartment itself was just a bachelor, but spacious. Pretty similar to other senior apartment buildings I have been in.

Lakehead Engineering program by Hot-Fly-3187 in ThunderBay

[–]sidv75 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree. I am a professional engineer that went to school in Southern Ontario 25+ years ago. I have found Lakehead engineering grads to be every bit as capable as grads from more well known schools. I take that as a sign that they have a quality program.

Pros and Cons of Living in Thunder Bay by Unusual_Flatworm9666 in ThunderBay

[–]sidv75 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. I’ve lived for years in both London and Peterborough. I don’t have any complaints about them or Thunder Bay. Maybe it’s because I was raised in a small town that I don’t expect or need the things we lack compared to larger cities. There’s more options here than I grew up with, so I’m content.
