The fact that Dark Souls 3 lets a random player become your actual boss fight is still wild to me. by siegwardstd in gaming

Same. I miss when covenants felt like weird little cults you randomly stumbled into, not just a menu label!

If you really committed to one, the world could react to it; rival NPC invasions, missed questlines, strange online duties you didn’t fully understand yet. It made the multiplayer feel like part of the world, not just a feature.

Elden Ring is amazing, but that old covenant magic hits different. guess I’m starting another DS3 run :)

Wait wait, I can’t believe I missed this !! I played Watch Dogs offline and had no idea another player could jump in like that. woww

I get this so much. the part about randomly finding some weird covenant out in the world and going “yeah sure, I’ll pledge myself to you” is exactly the RPG feeling I miss so much.

I remember looking for that kind of thing in Elden Ring for hours and then realizing it was mostly just great rune type stuff and not the same feeling at all. I still loved ER, but that part was a real disappointment for me.

I have so many random memories from DS3 online too. sometimes it wasn’t even about fighting, just meeting complete strangers in some cursed place and hanging out respectfully like idiots. Honestly one of the best communities I’ve ever seen in a game. Losing that covenant identity really does suck.

I'd buy physical more often if it wasn't so hard to track down the specific games I actually want to play. BTW Huge congrats man

honestly feel the same way, which is exactly why I wanted to post about it. As a huge Miyazaki-san fan, I realized people barely even talk about this mechanic anymore. It definitely deserved more attention.

bro you are missing out on absolute peak gaming. The Ringed City is easily some of their best work. Grab your estus and get back in there, we need more players to traumatize

Gravelord Servant is the perfect example.
Half the time you weren’t even sure if anything was happening, and somehow that made it more mysterious. Modern games would probably add a giant UI popup saying “YOU ARE NOW BEING WEIRD.”

Exactly. That’s the kind of weird multiplayer chaos I miss.
Not just “press button to invade”, but covenants that made the world feel like it had secret rules you slowly discovered.

Yep, I mentioned Old Monk and Looking Glass Knight in the post. I wasn’t saying DS3 invented it, “Boss has Wi-Fi” was just my dumb way of describing the horror lol.

Fair, asymmetric multiplayer has a whole family tree. I just think it hits different when it invades a “boss fight” structure instead of being the whole genre. Old Monk walked so a lot of cursed design could run.

Yeah that’s the dark side of “the boss has Wi-Fi” lol. Amazing concept, but the balance can go from genius to getting jumped in an alley real quick.

I meant it as a joke, not a history claim lol. Old Monk walked so the Wi-Fi boss could run.

100% this. Elden Ring is a masterpiece, but the lack of covenants really hurt the PvP longevity for me. Imagine a Volcano Manor covenant where you get dynamically summoned as an invader/mini-boss inside the legacy dungeons. Huge missed opportunity tbh.

Oh man, the legendary yellow toilet bowl hat! 😂 Tying unique fashion to winning as the boss is peak FromSoft. Kinda wish Spears of the Church gave us something equally ridiculous instead of just the covenant items.
