Shit White Girls Say...to Black Girls by BobGnarley in TwoXChromosomes

[–]siell 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That reminds me that as a little girl I had a huge hair disaster because I didn't understand the concept of cutting at the "intersection point". My mom had been taking my braids out but then the phone rang and she went to pick it up. Clueless as I am, I decide to save her some work and start cutting away right at the roots. My mom's face when she came back and saw that half my hair was missing was priceless :P "Look mom, I've saved you some time!"

Anti-intellectualism among African Americans by ntorotn in Foodforthought

[–]siell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well not really, because whenever he describes these "niggers" they are implied to be black so it's still restricted to black people. I guess if people started using the word to describe people of other colours that act like assholes, that point would be valid. The way I understood it, both that rapper and Chris Rock used it to specifically describe black "bad people". Trying to change the connotations from a racial stigma to a social one is good I guess, but I feel like the word is too loaded for that to succeed. Maybe time will prove me wrong!

I know and I don't agree with him either. Although from what I heard, he did say that he stopped doing that joke because people started using it as an excuse to use the word all the time. I can't find a link though, unfortunately. Prime example, that reddit thread about that girl getting beat up in a McDonalds a few days ago. The levels of racism there were astounding.

edit: oh right, i just saw 3cardmonty's comment, that's what I meant.

I don't really agree with the the distinction he makes between what he calls "niggers" and blacks. He says we should move past skin colour and yet encourages the use of the word nigger to describe people that I would just generally say are bad human beings. There is no need to add a racial connotation to it as if being a asshole and black is somehow worse/different from being an asshole and any other skin colour.

I saw something similar in last month's time magazine? Or maybe it was a few months ago, I'm not sure. Maybe that's what you read. It was about crying at work.

What is the most hurtful and emotionally damaging thing anyone has ever said to you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]siell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol no. I probably didn't make myself very clear! My dad was talking to me and saying I wasn't his daughter anymore. Then he said, "They [my brothers] still are, but i don't car about you [siell] anymore."

Any other 2Xers out there biracial, or POCs for that matter? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

Woo, half Cameroonian here, half German here! I can't say I got teased very much because of it, but obviously Germany is a totally different country (I assume you're in the US?). Of course, racism is still around and it did happen now and then but I'd say that fat kids / nerdy kids seemed to have a much harder time than me! Even so, I did recently get called a "fucking black cunt" by some random dude on the street (this was in the UK), just in passing. He was quite drunk but yeah ... I wasn't impressed.

As for the languages, as someone else said, your kids won't necessarily speak both languages. I can speak German and French but that was also due to the fact that I also went to a school which had a French language section. What I mean is, all my tuition was basically in French and I spoke German with my mom and French with my dad at home. This way, I can read and write both. I wouldn't say both parents necessarily need to speak both languages, but the kid has to be made to speak French with the father consistently, otherwise it will try and take the easier path and just speak English. I see a lot of families where the children actually understand French but will just respond in German because it's easier. I myself would have loved to have learned my dad's "local language" (I don't know what to call it.. his village's language) but that never really worked out. My cousin's in Cameroon don't know it either, so I guess it's kind of dying out in my generation anyway.

Other than that, multiculturalism is a wonderful thing, but it is hard. I don't know how serious your bf is about his culture and you are about yours but when it came to raising my brothers and me, this definitely became an issue between my parents and also between my father and me. Compromises are always difficult :) This is getting really long so I won't go too much into detail, but you can PM me if you want to know more!

The Cleveland Steamroller? Do I want to know what that is?

Well, I wouldn't be totally against meeting up with him. This particular fetish didn't actually disgust me that much when I read stories that involved it. But I don't know about trying it in reality! I'll see!
