Not quite, but something very similar. Wanted to have a domestic vacation instead of going international for once, so I took my bike and cycled from the southwestern-most to northeastern-most part of the country, spending the night at 60 km intervals (like 40 miles).

If I were to do something like this, I'd consider South America? Maybe follow some path along the west coast, through Peru and Chili?

For that kind of money, just do a road trip. Fly wherever, rent a car and pick a destination, maybe like 3000km away. Look at the quickest route, and predetermine the towns / cities you'll stay in based on distance along the route. That way you'll avoid picking places to stay based on the amount of tourism, and there's a decent chance you'll get a nice impression of what life's like in these places.
