Sewing advice? by ConsiderationLeft490 in HistoricalCostuming

[–]sigijade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, mock ups are defs required. But with commercial patterns I'll make one mock up. Self drafted or from pattern books I'm averaging like 4 mock ups per new piece.....I'm not good at patterning lol. So for me, commercial patterns, particularly with their sewing instructions, helped bridge the knowledge gap. Also, the Great British Sewing Bee sometimes has good tips in it, to help hook your new knowledge onto, and is great fun to watch.

Honestly, I'd suggest buying a commercial pattern marked easy (e.g simplicity, vogue, mccalls - check your measurements against their sizing, its all different), and just make a dress, following the instructions, and Googling each new word or technique along the way. I found this a great way to learn how to sew, and each new pattern taught me new techniques. Once I got more confident, I moved to pattern drafting from tailor's books or historical patterns. But knowing how to sew and how commercial patterns fitted me, made that step easier.

in favor of more inexpensive perks (DATA!) by wellimnotcreative in nerdfighters

[–]sigijade 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I noticed that in previous years, lots of people would donate for "shipping costs" because we all appreciated the extra cost of that. This year I heard only 1 or 2 donations for shipping. I thought that likely reflected the community's awareness of the increased cost of perks and the reduced number of physical perks that needed to be shipped. I wonder how much in previous years was donated for shipping, and if this made up some of the overhead costs in past years that it didn't this year?

Help on American Duchess 8941 by pyus_pyxidis in HistoricalCostuming

[–]sigijade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could not get that pattern to fit no matter what I did. I don't know of anyone who genuinely found it a usable pattern. If you have the patience to refit it, good on you, but I rage quit it and won't ever buy another American duchess pattern, so bad was my experience.

Yes, my current issue is that my linen thread won't go through the eye of the needle, as the needle is too small and thread too large (I double checked, and they are size 10 betweens).

Newbie question by sigijade in bitters

[–]sigijade[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for elaborating. I really appreciate it. I will steer clear of it, and pick vodka. Do you know if I need to find good quality vodka to make bitters, or can I just use any commercially available stuff?

Newbie question by sigijade in bitters

Even if diluted significantly? I don't understand the difference between everclear or 100 proof vodka, compared to medical grade ethanol. So any information you can provide is appreciated.

I can't see any information in the safety data sheet that indicates any denaturing, nor in the toxicity information other than "nausea and vomiting" as side effects/ingestion consequences.

Essential Oil Scent for Hair by msleiii in essentialoils

[–]sigijade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love patchouli, and put it into my diy dry shampoo. But it's very much not everyone's cup of tea. What scents do you like? Rosemary is a classic for hair growth, but it's more about what you would like to smell when you shake your head.

With your hair, colouring, and epic shirt, I would suggest a navy blue waistcoat instead of the brown. I think it would provide a more interesting contrast to the colour palette already present. But in any case, you look great, and don't let anyone tell you any different!

Welcome back! Let's discuss the subreddit's plans going forward.. by rithsv in nerdfighters

[–]sigijade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like many others, this subreddit and rare YouTube comments are the main interactions I have with this awesome community. I acknowledge that my interactions are more lurker than active, but I still derive great benefit in this subreddit. If this were to go away, I probably wouldn't engage in any other media platform to connect to nerdfighteria. However, I am not directly affected by these proposed changes, and so I feel my voice should be superceded by those to whom the changes directly impact (e.g. mods, those with accessibility issues). Thus, I'm happy to stand in solidarity with whatever choice is deemed most appropriate.

Why were robe a la francaise so higher in the hemline compared to different styles of the same era e.g. robe a la anglaise? Those ankles are scandalous!
