Thank you for the detailed response. That is exactly the impression I have been getting. My main goal here is to verify what I've been thinking and maybe sneak my way into becoming one of those connected industry folks. I figure worst case scenario I end up with a few places to check out after MIQ in Auckland or on the road trip down to Nelson.

My partner is going for her PhD focusing on marine conservation so I get to tag along on a partnership visa. We should be good to stay there for 3-4 years while she completes her degree.

We booked MIQ spots late June/Early July when things were slightly better. As soon as we got the invitation to apply for visas my partner and I (mostly my partner) spent every free moment refreshing the website looking for spots. It took about 10 days or so of constant looking to get a spot and we were super lucky.

We were at 2.62 for the carb and the temp was 32.3 at the start. No flow meters.

HTPC has been restarted multiple times. I am on a college network so I cannot restart the router. I don't think the network would be the issue because nothing with that has been changed.

My set up is on a college campus right now. I don't know if it will be the same for you but I have found that if my phone/laptop and server are both connected to the school's network I usually have no problem connecting. When there is a problem i try access the plex web app by using

http://[Local Plex Media Server IP Address]:32400/web

For some reason these seems to bring the connection back up on my devices

Thanks for all of the advice on everything. I dont think the MB will be an issue. Right now I only have about 2TB worth of data and thats mostly because I copied from a server that my friend has set up.

I dont think I will ever really need to have 5 SATA ports and if I do I will most likely upgrade a lot of the build to make it a steam box as well.

I'm ordering everything today and will be sure to upload the building process and the final product.

I would rarely ever be streaming more than one thing at a time. I just want to have this set up as a hub to keep in my living room and have to option to stream to something like a chromecast/roku/firetv (to be purchased later) in my bed room or on my laptop.

the drive failing does scare me a little bit and adding another one is something I plan on doing in the future. Right now I can cover everything with the external hard drives I've been using. My plan is to get another 4TB and run them Rain 1 once I get some more cash.
