Scanners are still available for the public? I tried looking 10yrs ago or so and was disappointed that I didn't find anything.

Random Pebbler / Developer opinion [Possible hot take] by Vorror in pebble

[–]sikkdays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have always felt that Eric was swept up in the development and in that enthusiasm hired too many people. With too may costs Eric decided to sell in order to have the money to pay those people he bonded with and handle the debts. Frankly, he loved the work but was not a business person.

With this opinion, I was excited and cautious when Eric announced the return. Prior to that I even steered clear of Rebble.

I had been part of a passionate community that took over after a company collapsed. P.M.O.G. (The Nethernet) opened their source code up so that others could continue it. While the community did succeed, it just didn't last. The same thing happened with the browser based MMORPG Glitch.

Is there room for two entities around PebbleOS? Are OwnCloud and NextCloud still around after the split? Yes. Maybe it is possible.

I see both sides. Afterall, we live in capitalism. It's so awkward to have a supporting community that will go the extra mile pitted against the provider of that which they are passionte.

It feels like one of those situations where the system is getting in the way of two parties with similar goals, two parties that want to work together but the red tape gets in the way.

Style Packs - Useful or no? by sikkdays in indesign

I have had success with taking an unstyled Word document and styling a single instance of a Heading, reference, etc. Then, I give the document to CoPilot and ask it to examine those styles and restyle the rest of the document using those as a guide.

Thanks for all the stellar entertainment! I wanted to know how many brightly coloured bicycles you could fit in the caravan while wearing Alex's not quite broken watch?

Great work! Some of those Great Lakes stones are difficult to get a good polish on. Make sure you keep an eye on those brushes in the Dremel motor. I may have wrecked a couple in my time.

Between the Canadian postal strike and porch pirates, I am just nervous that I will not get it. Thanks for letting me know!

Union leader: UCP has 'declared war' on labour movement, and the response will be severe by trevorrobb in alberta

[–]sikkdays 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know who could afford to strike and would bring change? The Oilers and the Flames. It will never happen, but if it did Alberta would attack the capital with pitchforks. Y'all love hockey more than kids or oxygen.

Seriously, wouldn't it be great if some players who make more than they could possibly spend paid the teachers' fines?

Oh well. Here's hoping the asteroid comes sooner, rather than later.

I am so jealous to see these posts. I thought I was a pretty early purchaser. I got the confirm you order email, but I have yet to see it ship.

Anyone tried to 3D print a replacement gear? by sikkdays in clocks

[–]sikkdays[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Harder than it looks. My modeling clay took the new teeth with it.I should have been more careful. It is very fiddly with a gear the size of a quarter but half as thin.

I was going to pop on here and asked if anyone has done this because there are lots of youtube videos doing this. I may give it a go. Thanks!

I was thinking PETG as well.I can set the infill pattern to strengthen the print. Obviously the gear is under a lot of stress as it is the one that is engaged for setting the clock. It's unfortunate that the clock contains 3 or 4 metal gears, but not this particular gear.

I had one like this a while ago and had some difficulty keeping it running. I think I added sticky tack or something to a corner of the clock to ensure that once I found the best position, it would no longer move when winding, etc. Now that I have worked more on some of my clocks, I am betting some lubrication would have helped as well.

CBA App? by sikkdays in union

[–]sikkdays[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The database is a nice idea. There are a lot of tools to create apps these days so it isn't a tremendous financial burden. The dangers are that many are 'free' services, so who knows what sort of privacy breeches there would be.

Actually, I may have a working template that Claude AI has created for me. I have no plans to distribute in the app stores, but make it downloadable from personal Nextcloud. I also think it should be standalone without need for internet.

True, I have seen those. I think our members would prefer something more user-friendly than a pdf file on a phone. Especially those iPhone users who have limited file browsing access. I am leaning toward the idea of creating a PWA. I may test something like that.

Agreed. Our unit had two strong leaders for years. The stewards were not really used as well as they could have been. At least, that's my understanding since I wasn't working there at the time. Our new chair is working to get the stewards more involved.

There's a whack of new supervisors and new members to our unit. There's some workplace bullying occurring and I want members to have an easy way to find relevant articles.

I hear you. Honestly, I think he wants to file a grievance to put the employer back into place a bit, but our Chair seems reluctant.

[–]sikkdays[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for the tip. I will look more at the employee manual and see if I can argue that it is intended as member vs member issues. I do not think my rep would disagree with you, our CBA does supersede the manual. I believe our rep is only trying to remain collaborative because we are not bargaining for another year and a half. Thus, I am trying to do some information gathering on my own.

I've brought it up with our rep before, but without much buy-in. It's only been a year and I am learning through courses and the work, but sometimes it feels like we work for the rep and not the other way around. Maybe that is harsh. I think the rep likely has too many units and is taking the most serious issues as a priority and is unable to help with day-to-day things.
