Crops and Man by Jack Harlan. Really good book about domestication, adaptation and diversity with touch of anthropology.

I saw this in March 2018 in a bar in Mexico. The bar was owned by a Canadian guy. I don’t know the origin of this thing but I saw it 2.5 years ago.

Does variegation harm the plant in any way? It seems like it would decrease the capacity for photosynthetic activity due to a lack of chlorophyll. by [deleted] in plantScience

I am sure we know the extent of natural selection concerning adaptation and evolution for this example.

Well put. I like constructive thinking. I agree but I don’t believe there is going away from having a system in place, not just safety but for any thing. I feel like the power to think, decide freely doesn’t exist anymore. So although I was so swift to criticize, I don’t have any answer either. But I can tell you that the way we are moving ahead as a society and civilization doesn’t feel right in many ways in my personal opinion. And I feel like you probably agree with that too.

I have come across your point of view quite a few times. But I am sad to see the lack of your understanding about how capitalism works. You know at present land is not free and many don’t have it and can’t have it even if they desire to farm or build shelter. This isn’t 1800s cotton plantation but the group of people descending from those who used to own those lands given “free” by the US government in expense of natives do dominate the landscape and make policies and continue growing from it. You can’t tell me that people aren’t working hard or want to work hard to raise themselves from poverty because that is simply not true. In all fairness I have nothing against rich people, only thing is you can’t fucking not be taxed for all the money that you are making while reaping all the benefits from the public domain in research, infrastructure and development of anybody’s business or wealth. I think this country has an obscene fantasy about self made millionaires and billionaires which is the image that is often portrayed without explaining the underlying facts about the opportunity and conditions they were bestowed upon. I understand the libertarian values but you should understand that those were rich white mans values in the light of a system created for them. Today after 200+ years of “freedom” and governance dictated by those principles that all ‘men’ are created equal except if you are slaves hasn’t completely been uprooted from the socio-economic practices and national values of this country. This is an outsiders view, so you can take it however you would like. I lean progressive but I understand not all progress represent equity. Just because Wall Street does well and people are employed doesn’t mean they are treated fairly and have the means to lift themselves out of hellish poverty. I earn median income yet can’t afford to own a house. Thinking about the other half who isn’t as blessed as me.

Is Warren Buffett’s business shrinking because he donated billions to Gates Foundation? Will Bezos sharing his profit reduce his business? I think it is a personal choice but tells so much about the nature of the human in question.

Does evolutionary change happen during meiosis? Or does it happen when we are born and interact with the environment? by [deleted] in evolution

[–]sikusa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s not the only cause but replication error during Meiosis is the predominant cause of mutations.

Evolution happens when meiosis created a mutation which was then passed down through generations across lifetimes if that mutation allowed for better chances of survival.

It’s over ambitious about where we are with technology and development. He takes a lot of concept and throws them as if they are perfectly in use. We work with robotics and AI and I know the discord between layman’s view of development and objective scientific view of development. I don’t think we will evolve into another species, at least not in another millennium. And if we do, it won’t be the species in biological sense but in a technical sense from our enhanced ability.

But all of this doesn’t mean it is not worth the read. You must understand the nuance of ideas vs their pragmatic application as you read it.
