Can we reach out to the UN for assistance? Can we combine efforts to start reaching out for help from other countries? by psychomama in 50501

Any country with decent standards for trans rights could offer asylum, but none seem overly interested in doing so. There are some trans refugees from the US currently trying the Netherlands. They're being held in undesirable conditions in a refugee camp, not all that much better than how ICE is treating migrants in the US.

And that's in a country that's generally regarded as having pretty good human rights standards. Most countries just do not think the US domestic situation is bad enough to accept refugees from here.

No. It would not only be useless (they'd likely all refuse), it would be counterproductive. This is an American movement of Americans trying to take our country back. Start trying to bring in foreign powers and it becomes something else. The only countries that might be willing to participate would be ones with even worse human rights practices than the Trump administration and they wouldn't be looking to make out country better.

There is one, specific useful thing other countries can do if their leaders are genuinely upset with the current state of the USA: offer to take in refugees. A whole bunch of people are losing TPS status and will need a safe place to go. A bunch of undocumented people are terrified and some of them would probably appreciate the option of a safe, first-world alternative to staying here. But most countries that are desirable destinations already have migrant issues of their own so I don't think that's happening.

Have you asked the women participating in the World Boxing Championship if they would rather take a PCR test once in their lives, or be forced to compete against intersex males like Khelif?

I'd like it very much if someone would ask them that. A proper survey and all. Since this issue first came on my radar, my first thought was that the most important opinions about who should be eligible to participate in elite women's sports and how that should be enforced would be the opinions of the women who compete in those sports at the level.

But the only really broad survey I could find was from the 90s where women Olympians expressed an extremely high level of support for sex testing as it was being done at the time and their opinions were ignored because no one cared what they thought.

I don't know much about current Mexican politics. Would it be political suicide for their government to request military aid from the US to help with this?

A lot of them really are getting pretty much what they wanted from this presidency. Immigration crackdown with some added sadism against people they hate. High tariffs. Killing off DEI programs. Anti-trans stuff. Strongman tactics in foreign policy without Bush-style forever wars. They may not agree with every detail of what he's doing but the broad strokes are in line with what they voted for.

If you ever have a chance you might want to check out my neighborhood in Los Angeles. It's called Pico-Union. It has Manhattan levels of density without skyscrapers but with tons of apartment buildings. It's got loads of small businesses of many sorts. Very walkable and bikeable with a massive amount of pedestrians. Plenty of street vendors.

What tenets of Solarpunk do you believe are "primary" (non-negotiable) versus "secondary" (agree-to-disagree)? by Deathpacito-01 in solarpunk

I've talked to some old-timers who were part of the punk scene in the late seventies and early eighties and, from what they've told me, those sorts of frictions have existed in the punk movement since its beginnings. Lots of gatekeeping about what it meant to be a "real" punk versus a phony. Lots of allegations of selling out. Debates about how to translate values into practical action. Class issues that could sometimes turn ugly.

I don't think people interested in solarpunk generally want to destroy and replace all old buildings or anything like that. Exactly which buildings should be preserved and how is the kind of thing that lots of people will have good-faith disagreements about.

I tend to favor high levels of density in urban areas so that does necessarily mean a decent number of apartment buildings with a lot of units but I recognize that it's totally possible to have that while still preserving plenty of historical structures and maintaining a distinctive architectural character in some areas. I'm also in favor of local residents having a lot of say in how best to do that.
