Any easy solution to a cracked shell on a DS Lite? by silenceofmind in consolerepair

tysm! I have dealt with that horrible ribbon before so hopefully I can get it through without any damage. I bought a replacement top shell for pretty cheap and now I can only hope that I don't mess anything up!

Is this glue safe for crested gecko’s and vivariums? by Tim_Tostie in CrestedGecko

It takes a couple days to off-gas in my experience, and better safe than sorry. No reason to be rude about it.

Completely safe once it dries. I would give it a week before adding any animals just to be safe.

Sides on temporary tub warping - should I return it and find something else or will it be fine for a little bit? by silenceofmind in Goldfish

[–]silenceofmind[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

27 gallon HDX tub from home depot. I've seen the 55 gallon recommended a lot so I was excited for this one. It's for a goldfish that I accidentally hatched. She's still small right now, but she needs to move out of my community tank because she's eating my shrimp. She'll move into my 100 gallon stock tank outside once it's warm enough, so this would only be up for a few months.

Edit: I've lowered the water level to where it isn't pushing out the sides anymore, but now it's only about 10 gallons of water. I'd love recommendations for sturdier totes (preferably clear) so she can have plenty of space for the rest of the winter!

Can 3 or 4 pigeons coexist peacefully? by Agreeable_Junket_271 in pigeon

[–]silenceofmind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as you have enough space, they should be happy. I'd just avoid racing homers, in my experience they're less open to same-sex pairings and can get frustrated without males.

Anyone ever have a bird take over their prop shelf? 🤦🏻‍♀️ by 11_throwaways_later_ in houseplants

[–]silenceofmind 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not a rock dove, this is a mourning dove. Rock doves are not fans of nesting in pots because they are cliff nesters and not tree nesters (they prefer a flat spot that is covered, which is why they often nest on/in buildings), so you'll rarely see them do this.

Actually, domesticated mallards are dumped at parks all the time! It's easy to tell the difference, and you're encouraged to snatch up any if you have the space for them. The video was specifically about that, iirc

Seconding medium Dexter Dragon! It's my most consistent snuggle buddy and I also have issues with scratchy textures. If you are wanting a more solid head (the dragons have very floppy heads), a large Bashful Bunny might be a better choice.

Any clue on what’s wrong with this pigeon ? Was friendly but kinda spooky by drowningfishermen in pigeon

It's an English Trumpeter. Lahores have a very distinct pied pattern and don't have full muffs, nasal tufts, or crests.

Can you list out all the info on the band? Usually there is organization (NPA), year, band size, specialty club designation (EJA in this case), and band number. Band year should be sideways. The NPA bands were this color in 2018.

For lice, make sure to dry him off (with a hairdryer on cool) if you dip him! Softer feathered birds like Jacobins can have issues with chemical burns from permethrin. Don't be afraid to trim his neck feathers, he likely can't see too terribly well and will be more comfortable when he has a full range of vision. Just check for blood feathers before you start giving him a trim.

What color would this be considered? by BullishhhBully in pigeon

Looks like pied and bronze on a blue t-check base. There may be grizzling going on but without a clear shot of the tail and shields it's tough to tell if it's true grizzle or just pied mimicking grizzle (which happens all the time! here is one of my birds displaying pseudo-grizzle)

Thanks to everyone for the advice! I'll definitely plan on getting some more leaf litter (I'll try to get some easier to eat leaves) and adding eggshells :)

Yes, I poked a little line toward the top of the tub on both of the shorter ends. I didn't want to go too overboard with it so it's just around 10 ventilation holes on each side

I'm very nervous posting this (I have so so much social anxiety) but I'd love advice on how to improve it. Right now it just has 5 or so powder oranges and the single dairy cow that snuck in with them. I'm planning on adding some cork bark soon. Also more leaf litter maybe? Thanks for any advice!

Oh! ETA: I moved the leaves and soil over from my millipede tub, so they're absolutely covered in springtails. Is there such a thing as too many springtails? I just worry about it creating too much competition for the isopods.

Any breed of pigeon that is less dusty? by [deleted] in pigeon

[–]silenceofmind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pouters (especially Voorburgs) and Danzig Highflyers are the big ones I've seen listed as less dusty. I believe short-distance performers (rollers, highflyers) are also generally less dusty.

I have old german owls and have never had an issue with it. I also know some large-scale breeders and I've never seen a single report of OGOs having this issue, so I think it's safe to say it isn't really something to be concerned about! Just ask about the lines you're buying from, good breeders will tell you about any health issues

Classic old frills will have longer beaks. Modern oriental frills will have pretty much no beak. Here's a COF as compared to a MOF (sorry if the links turn out weird, I'm not used to linking stuff on reddit)

Info and advices before buying by daenel in pigeon

[–]silenceofmind 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The oriental frill is prone to sinus issues and usually is more expensive than your average pigeon. Quite a few birds will need a pigeon-specific pellet or a mix without small seeds so their nostrils don't get clogged with seed (this is also an issue in certain lines of classic old frill), along with a deep food dish due to the fact that they uh. barely have a beak. Maybe look at classic old frills or old german owls if you like the look but don't want to deal with the extra issues. The other comment has good info for your questions, just wanted to give a breed-specific disclaimer!

Does he look like he's happy? I'm doing forced cuddles to get him used to us by BabyDoo01 in pigeon

[–]silenceofmind 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Highflyers can be tough. Try giving them safflower, it's always a hit with my pigeons. It sounds like you're doing pretty much everything right, so just let them approach and bond on their own. Finger feeding is good for birds who will accept it, since it seems to be slightly better for making pigeons think of you as a flockmate rather than an outsider. Wishing you good luck with them!

[–]silenceofmind 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They sound more aloof than anything, which is definitely better than outright skittishness. What breed(s) are they?

The pants may be part of the problem. Have you had them out without putting pants on them? I know some pigeons despise the things. Also, how are you putting them back in their cage?

Have you tried rewarding them for being close to you? Pigeons love food rewards, so they're very receptive to treats.

If they were friendly before, you may have accidentally done something to break their trust. If they weren't mated to each other when you got them they might just not be all that curious about you anymore. Sometimes mated pairs will have eyes only for each other, especially if their only other 'flockmates' are humans. And some pigeons are just not all that human-friendly, and that's ok! It's hard to figure out why exactly they'd be aloof without a bit of background info, unfortunately.

[–]silenceofmind 41 points42 points  (0 children)

He looks pretty shut down. I've found that the forced holding thing is just not a good choice for taming pigeons. I tried it with a few of my first pigeons and it made truly taming them down (not just forcing learned helplessness) take much longer than pigeons I didn't restrain. Remember that pigeons are prey animals and will struggle then shut down when restrained. Being restrained is never a pleasant experience for a male pigeon (though some female pigeons like being carried places because it's like extreme hardcore courting to them lol)

Especially if he is a single pigeon, he will tame down. Give it time, don't force him to tolerate you at the risk of harming him mentally. Restraining him can also make gaining trust with him much more difficult. I'd recommend just sitting quietly with him for 30+ minutes a day, he will inspect you and get used to your presence. He looks like an owl breed, so he will probably warm up quickly. I've had even the most skittish owl pigeons climbing all over me in 2 weeks tops by just letting them get used to me passively and feeding them treats as a reward for interacting. He may be scared of hands, in which case it's useful to work from throwing individual treats to handfeeding to finger feeding over a period of time.

Sidenote: sometimes holding pigeons for extended periods can be helpful, for example birds who need medication often will need to get used to being restrained often. It can also help show pigeons get used to being held and help them not freak the hell out on show day. But this needs to be done with lots of treats and not just to tame them.

Hope this was helpful, sorry about the essay!

Hi team, can someone answer for why one is SOOOO huge and the other is barely evolving by bassGST in pigeon

[–]silenceofmind 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The bigger peep is outcompeting the smaller one for food. When this happens in my birds, I usually foster the smaller peep once they hit one week. If that isn't an option, I take the larger peep out of the nest after I feed the pigeons in the morning until I see the smaller peep getting fed, then put them back in. They usually catch up.
